Deceit / MINISERIES REVIEW

A new British police thriller directed by Niall MacCormick? Oh, yes! I left the pending movies to watch and in one day I enjoyed the four episodes that make up this excellent miniseries... Just because of the director? No, it wasn't just because of that, it was also because of the leading lady, an actress I've talked about many times in other reviews and with a steadily rising career .

What can I say about Niall MacCormick? The winner of a Bafta in the past decade for Complicit is a filmmaker who has established a great career in British television. Thriller, drama, action, romance, are several genres in which the director does very well. But crime dramas are undoubtedly what he does best.

The two previous miniseries: The Sister and The Victim, are productions that I loved. Two powerful dramas with a crime at the center of the story. My review of The Sister, based on a novel by Neil Cross, can be read at the following link In that miniseries, events from the past came back to destroy the life of a man who held a creepy secret. And the miniseries The Victim, tackled a terrible case, the ending of which was so emotional that I couldn't help but cry while watching it. damn! You need to seek out those two productions and watch them. You're missing out on two great quality miniseries.

What's different about Deceit? It's another crime drama, but this time the main characters are not the victims of the crime. Now it's a story told from the point of view of the police in charge of investigating the case and the main suspect. In addition, the story is based on a real event, which adds strength to the story, with the script written by Emilia di Girolamo, a screenwriter with experience in television and a casual contributor to the British print media.

What does it have in common with your latest productions? The destruction of the lives of innocent people, who by small coincidences get involved in certain events. Causing problems that will haunt them for many years. The stormy personal drama of the protagonists, the mistakes and bad decisions that make us doubt the justice system that prevails in our society.

Like the other miniseries, it consists of four solid episodes, in which not a single minute is missing or missing. I watched it in one sitting, all four episodes in a row. A four-hour movie.

Now I'll tell you another reason why I gave it priority over everything else I have pending to watch. That reason has a name:

Niamh Algar

I have already named this actress many times. Winner of the Bafta for the film Calm with Horses, she is an actress that is winning me over more and more. I declare myself a fan of this actress! I praised her work in the miniseries The Virtues, where I was impressed by her character, so real and heartbreaking. I recently reviewed Censor, a horror movie where she was the absolute protagonist.

you can look for more information about this actress on the internet, who is selecting excellent works, not only in her home country, but also in American productions like Raised by Wolves. I say it again, for me she is taking off, her name may be hard to pronounce or even remember, but I am sure she will become a world famous actress.

Why am I sure of that, hell! You don't have to be a fortune teller. She has a portentous talent that makes her stand out, even in small roles. It reminds me of when I saw Olivia Colman's early productions, where she was only known in the UK, and now she's a world-renowned star. It's only a matter of time before she gets the opportunity to play the character that will mark the before and after of her career.

Niamh Algar.

What is the plot of Deceit?

Early nineties. Sadie Byrne is an expert policewoman who works as an undercover on various drug and weapons cases. She is an important piece in the arrest and dismantling of criminal gangs, but it is always her superior who gets the praise for the arrests and cases solved. One day he receives a call from Scotland Yard constable Keith Pedder, who is being advised by psychiatrist Paul Britton, to catch the prime suspect in the murder of Rachel Nickell, who was brutally murdered in front of her young son on Wimbledom Common and public opinion is pressing for the crime to be solved. The prime suspect is Colin Stagg, a single man with a strange demeanor who was seen in the park on the day of the crime. There is no solid evidence against him, but for the police all the evidence points to this man. Sadie Byrne must become Lizzie James and befriend Colin, until she manages to make him fall in love and the suspect confess the truth. Will the police be able to stop the murderer? Is Colin Stagg the guilty one? How will this difficult case affect Sadie Byrne's mind? How will it affect the lives of all those involved? Is it valid to destroy people's lives just because of a suspicion?

My opinion

Each episode reports at the beginning that some names and facts were changed, due to legal issues. The true identity of the detective who used the name Lizzie James for undercover operations is unknown. I do not know if they are legal issues of the police or of the same detective who is retired, who cannot reveal her real name and that in the miniseries we will know as Sadie Byrne.

The character is a police detective who takes very dangerous risks in every undercover operation. She has to confront drug dealers, arms dealers, drug addicts, violent criminals, etc. But she has never been on a case like this one. Where she has to get intimately involved with the murder suspect.

The undercover operation brings into play the advice of an expert psychiatrist. Paul Britton, whose profile of the criminal exactly matched the one Robert Ressler had been commissioned to do. Yes, the famous man who consolidated the Behavioral Science unit in the FBI, writer of many books and who has been a source of inspiration for many movies and TV series. For a reason he is named as the creator of the term Serial Killer. So Paul Britton was like the British Robert Reesler of the time. An eminence in the study of criminal behavior.

Britton will be in charge of guiding the detective, so that she can play the role of Lizzie James, a woman disturbed by having been part of a satanic sect, where she committed a crime that she always remembers, feeling attracted to Stagg, who also has a past with some sects and rituals.

Lizzie James will follow the assigned role to the letter. Every word, how she should behave, what she should write in letters, what she should tell him through phone calls and, finally, how she should act in the different encounters she has with the suspect.
Time is running out and the bosses demand fast results, so all undercover work must be accelerated. This puts a great deal of pressure on the detective. She fervently wants to solve the case, to be the winner, to emerge victorious. She is convinced that Stagg is the killer, all the evidence, the recordings, point in that direction.

Stagg fits the profile, a white male, 25 to 30 years old, no girlfriends, lives alone, with strange behavior, a history of abuse and petty crime, plus a taste for cults. He is a man who really conveys danger, the typical weirdo that anyone would see as a potential criminal.

The deception will soon pay off, Stagg will feel an unhealthy attraction to Lizzie James, who seems to be the ideal woman to consummate all his nasty fantasies involving sex, subjugation, knives and very disturbing things. But the detective, in her role as Lizzie James, will also be mentally affected.

It's one thing to be undercover in a drug gang and another to play the role of a totally unhinged woman for months at a time. Some of that madness, to which she is exposed in every letter or call, penetrates her mind, adding to the pressure she is under to close the case and imprison the bloody murderer of a defenseless woman. This will cause her to deteriorate physically and mentally in a way she was not prepared for.

This is when actress Niamh Algar shines in her performance, conveying toughness and confidence in every conversation or encounter, only to collapse in her loneliness, bringing out all the pain, helplessness and disgust she feels every moment she spends trying to get the killer to confess his big secret.

Behind the cat and mouse story, there is the context in which the story unfolds. A time when men dominated most of the positions in the police force, and these female agents had to work harder to be taken into account. From this arises the obsession that the protagonist manifests to catch the murderer, although the relationship she is creating with him is also affecting her.

What should one do in these cases: overstep boundaries, destroy lives without stopping to think that they may be wrong? The miniseries touches on an important point that is still relevant today. The presumption of innocence and the possible human error in an investigation.

Pressure from society, from communities demanding the arrest of the culprit, pressure from the sensationalist media, pressure from the heads of police agencies, who only give orders from their desks, but it is the agents on the ground who must act and make decisions, which may end up being wrong.

All of that still applies, now in an exponentially greater form. At the time when the events of the story took place, there were no social networks, so everything followed its normal course, the police arrested, provided evidence and the prosecution had to convince the jury and the judge of the guilt of the detainee, who is presumed innocent until sentencing. Now anyone, famous or not, can be singled out, prosecuted and convicted by the executioners of social networks. Even in cases where justice has spoken out and acquitted the alleged culprits, society continues to condemn them and brand them as guilty. In our times it seems that the presumption of innocence has been blurred.

Social prejudices are evident when someone is branded as a suspect just for being a shy person, not very communicative with neighbors, being single and not having a girlfriend seems to be something that neighbors saw as strange. A society in which the majority is governed by the rules imposed by the educational systems and inherited customs.

In each episode we notice how there are limits that the police go beyond, the deception prepared to catch the murderer, is a double-edged sword, on the one hand it can give them a great victory and solve the case, on the other hand it can lead to an accumulation of errors where it will always be the weakest in the hierarchical link those who suffer the consequences.

Will the police manage to bring Stagg down? Will they solve the horrible murder? Will Sadie finally be recognized for her merits and great work? Is Stagg really the ruthless killer? How did this case affect everyone involved? You have to watch the miniseries, to find out all the details. But be careful, in the next paragraphs I will talk about the real case and you better skip that part, so you won't find out important things.

The Real Case - Operation Edzell

/ El caso real - Operación Edzell

lineahivedelgada.jpg

Spoiler Alert

The murder of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledom Common occurred in July 1992. The young woman was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death in front of her young son, who was fortunately left alive. The police began to investigate, and their main suspect was Colin Stagg, a strange man who always walked his pet in the park. But his arrest was short-lived, for although the media fingered him as the culprit, the police could not find convincing evidence to re-arrest him. Thus was born Operation Edzell, which we see dramatized in the miniseries, using a policewoman resembling the victim to make the suspect fall in love and confess to committing the crime. A somewhat far-fetched idea, but it was all real. If you want to know about the case, read this wikipedia article which was the one I used to find out the details I am telling you, but do it only after watching the miniseries, because you are going to swallow a lot of surprising spoilers.

I was very surprised by this whole case, which could be completely solved 16 years later. Be warned, don't read the article without first watching the miniseries. I leave it for those who can't stand it and like spoilers. seriously! Some people like to read spoilers. I try to please them all. XD

End of spoiler

I already talked about the lead actress, but the rest of the actors do a perfect job. Especially the beloved actor Eddie Marsan playing the psychiatrist Britton. Key player in the whole operation. I know many will recognize the actor's face, because he not only works in British productions, we have seen him in American films and series.

Actor Sian Daniel Young excellently plays Colin Stagg, the suspect of the murder, a young man with mental problems, with a difficult past and who is the target of the police. The fragility, the madness, the fear, with a few gestures.

Harry Treadaway plays the cop in charge of the operation Keith. He is not a bad cop, he wants to solve the crime, he just inadvertently oversteps some boundaries that will come back to him like a boomerang.

Deceit is a raw and intense crime drama. Like other miniseries directed by Niall MacCormick, it will make us travel with the protagonist in a carousel of emotions. A very careful setting, which transports us to the early nineties. This thriller has intensity from its first minutes and an incredible performance by Niamh Algar.

A case that affected the lives of many people, and had to spend 16 years to be solved, but the wounds caused in the investigation can never be healed. A lesson that not everything is what it seems, and that our mind can make us believe things that are not. No one is infallible, even the greatest expert can make mistakes.

I hope you can watch this excellent miniseries (quality British production) and leave your opinion in the comments.
