I consider myself a follower of the horror genre, whether in movies, series or video games, I can say that it is not a genre in which it is easy to satisfy audiences, but I also think it is necessary that we create the right environment to enjoy them, it is not the same to watch a horror movie at noon in the living room and with your family doing their daily activities to watch a movie late at night with the room in the dark and in absolute silence.
Me considero un seguidor del género de terror, ya sea en películas, series o videojuegos, puedo decir que no es un género en el que resulta fácil satisfacer a las audiencias, pero también pienso que es necesario que nosotros creemos el entorno adecuado para disfrutar de ellas, no es lo mismo ver una película de terror al mediodía en la sala de estar y con tu familia haciendo sus actividades cotidianas a ver una película tarde en la noche con la habitación a oscuras y en absoluto silencio.
It has been difficult for me to choose which movie to talk about, for me the best horror movies are not the ones that scare you the most but the ones that have a great script. There are many movies that use loud and sudden sounds to scare you, but their script and plot are uninteresting.
Me ha resultado difícil elegir sobre cual película hablar, para mí las mejores películas de terror no son las que más te hacen saltar del susto sino las que poseen un gran argumento. Hay muchas películas que utilizan sonidos estridentes y repentinos para asustar, pero su trama y argumentos son poco interesantes.
That's why I have chosen to talk about Hereditary, a 2018 film directed by Ari Aster and starring the Australian actress Toni Collette, that caused me intrigue, revulsion and fear.
Por ello he elegido hablar de Hereditary, una película de 2018 dirigida por Ari Aster y protagonizada por la actriz australiana Toni Collette, que me ha provocado intriga, repulsión y miedo.
I find this film difficult to review in a general overview because of its complexity, so I will tell you a little about how its story unfolds.
Esta película me parece difícil de reseñar de forma general por su complejidad, por lo que les contaré un poco cómo se desarrolla su trama.
The story of this film is about a family whose grandmother has just died, strangely at her funeral the family sees many unfamiliar faces but do not give much importance. The youngest daughter of the protagonist, Charlie, manifests a strange behavior and sometimes gets lost in herself acting as she can’t control her own will, at the same time she has an obsession with drawing gloomy figures of heads, even to the point of cutting the heads of small animals.
La historia de esta película trata de una familia cuya abuela Ellen acaba de morir, extrañamente en su velorio la familia ve muchos rostros desconocidos pero no dan mucha importancia. La hija menor de la protagonista, Charlie, manifiesta un comportamiento sin duda extraño y en ocasiones se pierde en si misma actuando como si no fuese ella quien controla su propia voluntad, al mismo tiempo que tiene una obsesión con dibujar figuras tétricas de cabezas e incluso llega a cortar la cabeza de pequeños animales.
Unfortunately Charlie is decapitated in a car accident when her brother Peter was taking her to the hospital after an incident at a party they had both attended.

This loss plunges mother Annie into a deep depression, which leads her to perform a spiritual session to contact her dead daughter on the recommendation of a woman whom she believes she met by chance, without suspecting that this woman was part of a cult that worships a demon named Paymon and of which she was not aware that her mother Ellen was considered the queen.

Very strange things start to happen, Annie begins to lose her sanity and Peter begins to have hallucinations of his dead sister. Our protagonist Annie gets a big surprise when she discovers the body of her mother decapitated and in a state of decomposition in the attic of her house, with indications that she was the object of rituals.

Annie, possessed, ends up cutting off her own head with a wire while her own son Peter watches in terror and scared jumps out of the attic window into the garden. Peter, seeing how the body of his mother, now headless and levitating enters the tree house in his garden, is attracted by more than curiosity and decides to go in there to find that in his tree house are the members of this cult. And there he can observe the bodies of his grandmother and his mother decapitated in a position of reverence towards a mannequin representing Paymon that has the head of his sister Charlie on it.
Annie en un momento en que se encuentra poseída termina cortando su propia cabeza con un alambre en el ático mientras su propio hijo Peter la observa aterrorizado y este termina saltando de la ventana del ático hacia el jardín. The members of this cult place a crown on the young man while saying the words, “you are Paymon one of the eight kings of the inferno (...) we corrected your first female body and now we give you this healthy male body, we reject the trinity and we give you our devotion great Paymon...”
Los miembros de esta secta colocan una corona al joven mientras dicen las palabras, “tu eres Paimon uno de los ocho reyes del infierno (…) corregimos tu primer cuerpo femenino y ahora te damos este saludable cuerpo masculino, rechazamos la trinidad y te damos nuestra devoción gran Paimon…”
As I won't go into details to explain the story of this movie, I must say that Paymon is a demon who doesn't like to incarnate in female bodies, which suggests that the grandmother Ellen as the leader of the cult had the responsibility of Paymon's incarnation, but she could only harbor the demon in the body of her granddaughter whom she protected, and upon the death of Ellen, the cult decides to murder the girl Charlie and transition the demon to a male body.
Si bien no entraré en detalles para explicar la historia de esta película, debo decir que Paimon es un demonio a quien no le gusta encarnar en cuerpos femeninos, lo que sugiere que la abuela como líder de la secta tenía la responsabilidad de la encarnación de Paimon, pero esta sólo pudo albergar al demonio en el cuerpo de su nieta a quien protegía, y al Ellen morir, la secta decide asesinar a la niña Charlie y hacer la transición a un cuerpo masculino, el de su hermano Peter.
What I liked most about this film is the mystery it keeps along the movie, which creates a lot of tension waiting for key moments to scare us with grotesque images and frightening moments.
Lo que más me gustó de esta película es el misterio que sostiene durante la mayor parte del tiempo, lo que crea mucha tensión a la espera de momentos claves para asustarnos con imágenes grotescas y momentos de espanto.
The first scene that shocked me was the accident where Charlie is decapitated by a light pole, it was something completely unexpected, a very strong scene, and that generates a lot of anguish for the agony of the mother to discover the body of her daughter. To imagine that something like this could happen to us is terrifying.
La primera escena que me impactó fue el accidente donde Charlie es decapitada por un poste de luz, fue algo completamente inesperado, una escena muy fuerte, y que genera mucha angustia por la agonía de la madre al descubrir el cuerpo de su hija. Imaginar que algo así pueda sucedernos es aterrador.
Another scene that I found creepy was when Annie possessed passes behind her son Peter walking along the wall, this scene takes us by surprise and although nothing happens, it is terrifying to see her silently crossing the screen behind her son.
Otra escena que me pareció espeluznante fue cuando Annie poseída pasa por detrás de su hijo Peter caminando por la pared, esta escena nos toma por sorpresa y aunque no sucede nada, resulta aterrador verla cruzarse silenciosamente en la pantalla por detrás de su hijo de forma muy tétrica.
Possibly the scene I found most frightening is when Annie cuts her own head off in the attic, levitating high up in the ceiling, with increasingly jerky and rapid movements.
Posiblemente la escena que me pareció más aterradora es cuando Annie corta su propia cabeza en el ático, levitando en lo alto del techo, con movimientos cada vez más bruscos y rápidos.
And finally the scenes that didn't scare me but I found really disturbing were the ones showing the decapitated bodies, either in the attic or in the final scene in the tree house, where you can see the body of the grandmother in a state of decomposition and the body of Annie still shedding blood in a bowing position towards a mannequin wearing the head of the little girl Charlie. I found these scenes disgusting and difficult to watch.
Y finalmente las escenas que no me asustaron sino que me parecieron realmente perturbadoras fueron las que mostraban los cuerpos decapitados, ya fuese en el ático o en la escena final de la casa del árbol, en donde se puede observar el cuerpo de la abuela en estado de descomposición y el cuerpo de Annie todavía derramando sangre en posición de reverencia hacia un maniquí que lleva puesta la cabeza de la niña Charlie. Estas escenas me resultaron repugnantes y difíciles de digerir.
If you want to see this movie, I recommend you watch it late and in total darkness, if you are alone much better, so I did. I saw it a second time in the middle of the day and it was not as shocking as the first time I saw it.
Si quieres ver está película, te recomiendo que la veas tarde y en total oscuridad, si estás solo mucho mejor, así lo hice yo. La vi una segunda vez en pleno día y no fue tan impactante como la primera vez que la vi.
