El día de hoy retomo mi serie de artículos sobre las películas que conforman el UCM, en esta oportunidad tratándose de la tercera película de la saga, es decir, Iron Man 2.
Con Iron Man 2 volvemos a seguir la vida del ocurrente Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), quien se enfrentará a enemigos relacionados con el pasado de su familia y, a su vez, se irá formando bajo la supervisión de S.H.I.E.L.D. en el complicado rol de ser un superhéroe y las responsabilidades que esto conlleva.
Today I resume my series of articles about the movies that make up the MCU, this time talking about the third movie of the saga, that is, Iron Man 2.
With Iron Man 2 we once again follow the life of the witty Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who will face enemies related to his family's past and, in turn, will be formed under the supervision of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the complicated role of being a superhero and the responsibilities that this entails.
La presentación del universo de superhéroes
Nick Fury en Iron Man (2008) / Nick Fury in Iron Man (2008)
En Iron Man (2008) conocimos al agente Phil Coulson, miembro de una agencia que sería revelada como S.H.I.E.L.D. al final de la película, para finalmente cerrar con Nick Fury, director de la agencia, dando las palabras "¿Crees que eres el único superhéroe en el mundo? Mr Stark, tú formas parte de un universo más grande." Preparando así el terreno para la franquicia que se aproxima. En Hulk: El Hombre Increíble también tuvimos un par de referencias sutiles a ese universo, tales como el hecho de que el mismo Hulk hubiera sido un experimento que buscaba recrear el suero del supersoldado del Capitán América, o apariciones breves de tecnología perteneciente a Stark Industries, pero sin duda la más relevante fue el cameo del mismísimo Tony Stark en la película.
Ahora, en Iron Man 2 tenemos más que referencias sutiles, pues gran parte de la palícula ya se centra en sí en la relación de Stark con S.H.I.E.L.D., quienes buscan prepararlo para volverlo miembro apto de la iniciativa Vengadores, supervisando así sus problemas con Justin Hammer o Ivan Vanko pero sin interferir directamente en ellos.
The presentation of the superhero universe
In Iron Man (2008) we met agent Phil Coulson, a member of an agency that would be revealed as S.H.I.E.L.D. at the end of the film, finally closing with Nick Fury, director of the agency, giving the words "You think you're the only superhero in the world? Mr. Stark, you become part of a bigger universe" thus setting the stage for the upcoming franchise. In The Incredible Hulk we also had a couple of subtle references to that universe, such as the fact that the Hulk himself would have been an experiment seeking to recreate Captain America's supersoldier serum, or brief appearances of technology belonging to Stark Industries, but undoubtedly the most relevant was the cameo of Tony Stark himself in the film.
Now, in Iron Man 2 we have more than subtle references, as much of the film already focuses itself on Stark's relationship with S.H.I.E.L.D., who seek to groom him to become an apt member of the Avengers initiative, thus overseeing his problems with Justin Hammer or Ivan Vanko but not directly interfering with them.
Los problemas de esta película
Se preocupa más por The Avengers que por sí misma
A pesar de servir de presentación para la saga de lo que es el trabajo de S.H.I.E.L.D., precisamente su fuerte presencia en esta película es también uno de los principales fallos que puedo destacar.
Sucede aquí que S.H.I.E.L.D. se siente como algo ajeno a la película, pues su participación en la historia no tiene ninguna conexión real con el conflicto principal, es decir, Ivan Vanko y Justin Hammer. Esto en otros casos no tendría porqué ser un problema, pues siempre pueden haber elementos que sirvan para construir las próximas películas, pero el problema acá es que S.H.I.E.L.D. no tiene sólo un par de apariciones breves, sino que ocupa gran parte del tiempo de la película en sus intenciones con Stark. Si a eso le sumamos lo misteriosa que es la agencia, pues aún dejan detalles por descubrir en futuras películas, todo el tema se acaba sintiendo aún más ajeno a la película, al punto de casi sentirse innecesario.
El mal uso de los villanos
Hay un elemento que fue muy criticado de Marvel Studios durante varios años (Que afortunadamente, pareciera que aprendieron a dejar atrás), el cual se trata del mal uso que dieron a la mayoría de sus primeros villanos.
En este sentido, Obadiah Stane puede haber sido una buena primera excepción, pero tras el decepcionante papel de La Abominación en Hulk: El Hombre Increíble (Interpretado por el excelente actor que es Tim Roth), tenemos ahora en esta película a Justin Hammer como un rival de Tony Stark y a Ivan Vanko como el villano Whiplash, el hijo de un ex-compañero de trabajo de Howard Stark. Ambos villanos fueron interpretados por otros dos actores de gran magnitud, tal como lo son Sam Rockwell y Mickey Rourke, sin embargo, ambos papeles reducidos a una triste simpleza que buscó que la película se centre en otros aspectos, es decir, la presencia de S.H.I.E.L.D. (Se dice que Mickey Rourke incluso aprendió ruso para interpretar a su personaje y acabó con muchas de sus escenas eliminadas).
The problems with this movie
It cares more about The Avengers than about itself.
Despite serving as a presentation for the saga of what is the work of S.H.I.E.L.D., precisely its strong presence in this film is also one of the main flaws I can highlight.
It happens here that S.H.I.E.L.D. feels like something alien to the movie, since its participation in the story has no real connection with the main conflict, that is, Ivan Vanko and Justin Hammer. In other cases this wouldn't have to be a problem, since there can always be elements that serve to build the next films, but the problem here is that S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't just have a couple of brief appearances, but occupies much of the film's time in its intentions with Stark. Add to that how mysterious the agency is, as they still leave details to be discovered in future films, and the whole thing ends up feeling even more extraneous to the film, to the point of almost feeling unnecessary.
The misuse of villains
There is one element that was heavily criticized of Marvel Studios for several years (Which thankfully, they seem to have learned to put behind them), which is the misuse they made of most of their early villains.
In this sense, Obadiah Stane may have been a good first exception, but after the disappointing role of The Abomination in The Incredible Hulk (Played by the excellent actor that is Tim Roth), we now have in this film Justin Hammer as a rival of Tony Stark and Ivan Vanko as the villain Whiplash, the son of a former co-worker of Howard Stark. Both villains were played by two other actors of great magnitude, such as Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke, however, both roles reduced to a sad simplicity that sought to make the film focus on other aspects, namely the presence of S.H.I.E.L.D. (It is said that Mickey Rourke even learned Russian to play his character and ended up with many of his scenes deleted).
¿Qué cosas funcionan?
Tony Stark sigue conquistando la pantalla
Desde la película anterior, Robert Downey Jr. nos deja claro que él fue la mejor elección para interpretar al personaje. Ahora en Iron man 2 es precisamente la calidad de su trabajo la que nos permite seguir conectando con su personaje y con su historia, aún cuando puedan haber fallos importantes en esta secuela.
El nuevo James Rhodes
Tras los problemas entre Terrence Howard y el estudio, el personaje de James Rhodes pasó a ser interpretado por el actor Don Cheadle en esta película. Siendo ésta una de las pocas veces que Marvel Studios ha llegado a hacer esto (Siendo aún menos común tras el desarrollo que fue teniendo la franquicia, con el éxito que tenía el mantener un sólo reparto).
Cheadle nos da un Rhodey muy diferente en caracterización al que Howard nos dio en el 2008, pero con la misma relación con Tony Stark y el mismo papel en su vida, ahora además con su evolución como Máquina de Guerra (Superhéroe que irónicamente aumentaba el interés de Terrence Howard en interpretar a Rhodes)
La introducción de la deslumbrante Natasha Romanoff
En esta película tenemos también la primera aparición de la talentosa Scarlett Johansson como Natasha Romanoff a.k.a La Viuda Negra, a quien veremos nuevamente en más de una ocasión a lo largo del UCM.
La participación de Romanoff en esta película no es perfecta, pues va de la mano con S.H.I.E.L.D. y tiene de hecho sus mismos problemas, pues su relación con la trama principal también se siente dispersa. Sin embargo, Johansson igualmente se adueña de su personaje de una forma tan perfecta como Downey Jr. con Stark, por lo que el personaje se vuelve uno de los factores memorables de esta película.
What works?
Tony Stark still conquering the screen.
Since the previous movie, Robert Downey Jr. makes it clear to us that he was the best choice to play the character. Now in Iron man 2 it is precisely the quality of his work that allows us to continue to connect with his character and his story, even if there may be major flaws in this sequel.
The new James Rhodes
After the problems between Terrence Howard and the studio, the character of James Rhodes came to be played by the actor Don Cheadle in this movie. This is one of the few times that Marvel Studios has done this (being even less common after the development of the franchise, with the success of keeping only one cast).
Cheadle gives us a Rhodey very different in characterization than Howard gave us in 2008, but with the same relationship with Tony Stark and the same role in his life, now also with his evolution as War Machine (Superhero which ironically increased Terrence Howard's interest in playing Rhodes).
The introduction of the dazzling Natasha Romanoff.
In this film we also have the first appearance of the talented Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a Black Widow, who we will see again on more than one occasion throughout the MCU.
Romanoff's* participation in this film is not perfect, as it goes hand in hand with S.H.I.E.L.D. and has indeed its own problems, as her relationship with the main plot also feels scattered. However, Johansson equally owns his character as perfectly as Downey Jr. does with Stark, making the character one of the memorable factors of this film.
Conclusión
Iron Man 2 tiene múltiples defectos que la dejan muy por debajo del nivel de su predecesora, pero a pesar de ello, logra ser entretenida al ser llevada por el carisma de Robert Downey Jr. y parte del resto del reparto que también conectan bastante con el espectador (Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, Jon Favreau y Don Cheadle mayormente).
La película deja claro que una de sus principales intenciones es preparar el terreno para el resto del UCM, con la importancia que se le da a S.H.I.E.L.D. y su conexión en su escena post-créditos con Thor. Esto no es necesariamente un punto positivo en una película, pero sí ayudó a construir aún más las bases de esta franquicia.
Conclusion.
Iron Man 2 has multiple flaws that leave it far below the level of its predecessor, but despite this, it manages to be entertaining as it is carried by the charisma of Robert Downey Jr. and some of the rest of the cast who also connect quite a bit with the viewer (Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, Jon Favreau and Don Cheadle mostly).
The film makes it clear that one of its main intentions is to set the stage for the rest of the MCU, with the importance given to S.H.I.E.L.D. and its connection in its post-credits scene with Thor. This isn't necessarily a plus in a movie, but it did help to further build the foundation of this franchise.
