Thor, from 2011, is the fourth film belonging to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it is the one I will review today to continue with my series of analysis about all the films that make up this universe.

In Thor we will meet the Asgardian gods from Norse mythology, who are also an important part of the imaginary of Marvel comics.

Meeting the space and magic

Before Thor, Marvel Studios movies were mainly focused on science fiction, that is, with the fantastic elements being explained with some scientific logic. Thus, our protagonists had been Tony Stark with his technology and Bruce Banner with his mutation. With Thor we have an extreme leap into the mythical beings of Scandinavian beliefs, with magical powers and fantasy realms.

Some would think it would have been better to make a more subtle leap, introducing mystical elements more slowly so that it would be less sudden for those who have not followed Marvel products before. However, making the immediate leap makes it easier to understand that such cosmic powers are an important part of the Marvel world, because in the end, it's a matter of adapting.

Introducing space and magic in Thor allows us to more easily get to elements such as the Tesseract, the infinity gems or space beings.

S.H.I.E.L.D. y los aliens dioses

S.H.I.E.L.D. and the aliens gods.

By introducing such fanciful themes into a saga that had been focusing on scientific elements, Marvel Studios must find some way to tie those topics together. That's where S.H.I.E.L.D. comes in.

In Thor, S.H.I.E.L.D. once again makes an appearance and as in Iron Man 2, they once again play an important role in the plot, for while part of it focuses on Thor's relationship with Loki, another part focuses on Thor's stay on Earth.

The treatment that S.H.I.E.L.D. gives to the god of thunder and the hammer that came with him, is basically the typical treatment that aliens receive in the movies, so Thor manages to connect this way its fantastic elements with a science fiction environment to bring it slightly closer to the thematic that MCU had already been having in all this introduction process.

The favorite Marvel' s brotherhood

Among the most remarkable things that Thor has, is the introduction of two characters that will have a very relevant role in this saga, as well as a place in the hearts of the viewers, being the brother duo Thor and Loki.

They are both characters created to connect and oppose each other, with characteristics that unite them and characteristics that completely separate them. Thor represents a strong, masculine, overconfident, impulsive, jocular and extroverted warrior, while Loki is more the intellectual, androgynous, cautious, calculating, cold and introverted one. Thus, both characters complement each other in a duo destined to eternally contradict each other.

On the other hand, both characters are played by actors who manage to perfectly convey the essence of their characters. Chris Hemsworth gives Thor his comic and charismatic air, while Tom Hiddleston portrays well in Loki his observant and malicious personality.

The rest of the cast

Thor is a simple movie, it doesn't get to be above most, but it doesn't get to be a bad movie either, as it is entertaining, fluid and funny. The cast is one of its best weapons, not only for its leading duo but also for the rest of the characters they complement.

The legendary actor Anthony Hopkins gives life to the All-Father, Odin, with an imposing performance that manages to convey the strength and majesty of his character. Rene Russo plays Frigga, reflecting in her performance the wisdom and calm of her character. Stellan Skarsgård and Kat Dennings play the work team of Thor's love interest, Professor Erik Selvig and intern Darcy Lewis, both characters with enough charm to win the viewer's appreciation.

Finally, Academy Award winner Natalie Portman begins in this film a complicated relationship with Marvel Studios, playing Thor's love interest, Dr. Jane Foster, who despite the simplicity with which her character is worked, manages to make her character connect well with Thor and thus achieve a relationship with which the viewer can become attached. (As I mentioned in the previous article, the bad reputation of Marvel Studios with its villains, also came to have the same reputation with its female characters, which are played by recognized actresses but reduced to a simple flat support for the main character).
