As today is Father's Day, I want to share with you my impressions of a movie I watched last night with my oldest daughter, called Fatherhood. When I read the brief review that Netflix shows regarding this movie, I immediately felt that I was going to like it, as it tells a story inspired by true events in which a father assumes alone the raising of his newborn daughter after being widowed.
A propósito de celebrarse hoy el día del padre, quiero compartirles mis impresiones de una película que vi anoche con mi hija mayor, titulada Ser Padre. Cuando leí la breve reseña que muestra Netflix en relación a esta película, sentí de inmediato que me iba a gustar, pues cuenta una historia inspirada en hechos reales en la que un padre asume solo la crianza de su hija recién nacida tras enviudar.
The first impression upon seeing that the father figure is played by Kevin Hart, would lead one to assume that this is a comedy, which contrasts with the fact that it is inspired by a true story, the story of Matthew Logelin, narrated in the book Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love, which became a bestseller in 2011, and whose adaptation gave rise to Fatherhood.
La primera impresión al ver que la figura del padre está interpretada por Kevin Hart, haría suponer que se trata de una comedia, lo que contrasta con el hecho de estar inspirada en una historia real, la historia de Matthew Logelin, narrada en el libro Dos besos para Maddy: Una memoria de pérdida y amor, que llegó a convertirse en bestseller el año 2011, y cuya adaptación dio origen a Ser Padre.
There are countless cases in which a mother is a sole protagonist in raising her children, not necessarily because she is widowed, but simply because she is a single mother; however, when the case is the opposite, and it is the man who is responsible for raising a newborn child alone, without the mother figure, and even more so being a first-time father, it seems a titanic task in which most would bet on failure.
Son incontables los casos en los que una madre es la protagonista única en la crianza de sus hijos, no necesariamente por haber enviudado, sino por el simple hecho de ser una madre soltera; sin embargo, cuando el caso es contrario, y es el hombre el responsable de criar a un hijo recién nacido solo, sin la figura materna, y más aun siendo un padre primerizo, parece una tarea titánica en la que la mayoría apostaría por el fracaso.
Matt and his wife Liz were forced to move up the due date of their daughter Maddy's birth because of pregnancy complications. An unplanned cesarean section brought the couple's first child into the world, a joy that was marred hours later by the sudden death of the mother from a pulmonary embolism.
Matt y su esposa Liz se vieron forzados a adelantar la fecha de nacimiento de su hija Maddy, pues las complicaciones del embarazo así lo dispusieron. Una cesárea imprevista trajo al mundo a la primera hija del matrimonio, felicidad que se vio empañada horas después por la súbita muerte de la madre producto de una embolia pulmonary.
Without the knowledge that comes from the previous experience of being a father, without the wisdom and instinct of a mother, with the duel of someone who has lost the love of his life and with the challenge of proving that he is capable of making it; Matt faces his reality and assumes the role of father, surrounded by his friends and the expectant gaze of his family.
Sin el conocimiento que da la experiencia previa de ser padre, sin el acompañamiento de la sabiduría e instinto de una madre, con el duelo a cuesta de quien a perdido al amor de su vida, y con el reto de demostrar que si es capaz de lograrlo; Matt enfrenta su realidad y asume el rol de padre, rodeado de sus amigos y de la mirada expectante de su familial.
Combining the drama of the story with a bit of comedy, Kevin Hart gives way to a man who turns everyday scenes into funny moments, not at the level of comedy to which we are accustomed, but making it pleasant enough to make us feel identified as parents with what represents the day to day in raising a child: the hours of late nights, the uncontrollable crying, the hundreds of diapers to change; all this while fulfilling his work and regular obligations.
Combinando el drama de la historia con un poco de comedia, Kevin Hart da paso a un hombre que convierte escenas cotidianas en momentos divertidos, no al nivel de comedia al que él nos tiene acostumbrados, pero si haciéndola lo suficientemente agradable como para hacernos sentir identificados como padres con lo que representa el día a día en la crianza de un hijo: las horas de trasnocho, el llanto incontrolable, los cientos de pañales por cambiar; todo esto a la par de cumplir con sus obligaciones laborales y habituales.
For many years society has made us see that all these tasks corresponded to the mother, shared to a lesser degree with the father, yes, but with great weight on the maternal figure; however, this film highlights the reality of many men who exalt and honor the title of fathers. Responsible men who protect, care for, and love their children. Men like Matt prove that it is possible to assume fatherhood with true commitment.
La sociedad durante muchos años nos ha hecho ver que todas estas tareas correspondían a la madre, compartidas en menor grado con el padre, si, pero con gran peso en la figura materna; sin embargo, esta película pone de manifiesto la realidad de muchísimos hombres que enaltecen y honrar el título de padres. Hombres responsables que protegen, cuidan y aman a sus hijos. Hombres como Matt que dan fe de que si es posible asumir la paternidad con verdadero compromiso.
I keep the beautiful message that the film promotes, I keep the good thing to think that it is possible to have a society of first-class parents who have their children in the first place, above work, above the love of a woman, even above the family, those parents who understand that they are the reflection of what their children will be, that their example defines a pattern in their lives.
With this, I make it clear that this film is by no means a super production, no, not by a long shot. Keep in mind the fact that this is a comedy with drama, and it stays within that stereotype of movies, as I always say when it comes to this genre see it without major pretensions. However, I particularly liked it, especially for the reflection it transmits, rescuing the importance of the paternal role.
I insist, I will stay with the story, with the testimony of life, beyond criticizing the staging, which in fact is not bad, but it is not brutal. Perhaps many will say, well, for that they could have read the book, and although it is true, it is no secret that the audiovisual media have a larger audience and attract the masses.
Me quedo con el mensaje bonito que promueve la película, me quedo con lo bueno de pensar que si es posible tener una sociedad de padres de primera que ponen a sus hijos en primer lugar, por encima del trabajo, del amor a una mujer, incluso de la familia, esos padres que entienden que ellos son el reflejo de lo que sus hijos serán, que su ejemplo define un patrón en sus vidas.
Con esto dejo claro que esta película no es para nada una super producción, no, ni de lejos. Tengan en cuenta el hecho de que se trata de una comedia con drama, y se mantiene dentro de ese estereotipo de películas, como siempre digo en cuanto a este género, véanla sin mayores pretensiones. Ahora bien, particularmente a mi me gustó, sobre todo por la reflexión que transmite rescatando la importancia del rol paterno.
Insisto, me quedo con la historia, con el testimonio de vida, más allá de criticar la puesta en escena, que de hecho no es mala, pero no llega a ser brutal. Quizá muchos dirán, bueno para eso podrían haber leído el libro, y aunque es cierto, no es un secreto que los medios audiovisuales tienen una mayor audiencia y atraen a las grandes masas.
