English Version
But those movies where I have to analyze or remember things in order to interpret or those where time is circular or presented in a jumping style I definitely have to pay attention to. So I select them for those moments of rest or relaxation.
Of course when new seasons of my favorite series come out I can't help it and I launch a marathon until I devour the new chapters. This time, looking for something to watch, I came across this Spanish sci-fi movie called "El hoyo" (in English, The platform). Below, I tell you what it's about..
Good Reading!
El Hoyo, a film that raises social situations
Thus begins a series of events of suspense and cannibalism. The structure of this center involved the distribution of two inmates per "cell", but what made it different from traditional centers, is the arrangement of the cells, since each one was a level. In the middle of the cells, there was a square hole, through which a platform moved, which was a table where once a day food circulated from the "zero levels" where the banquet was prepared to the lower levels. Little by little Goreng began to learn the system, initially thanks to his cellmate Trimagasi, who had already been in the system for some time and to whom everything seemed "obvious". Goreng knew about the disadvantages or the calamities that could be experienced inside the hole, for him, it was only depriving himself of freedom for a few months and that's why he took a book to pass the time. But he would soon find out what was at the heart of the matter.
Trimagasi quickly made him understand the "obvious" those people who were closer to level zero could eat and the lower level could only eat the leftovers. In the plot we can see how human nature is affected, how some of the characters become dehumanized and lose their values, being ruled by selfishness and their survival instincts. Likewise, there are characters who manage to transgress the rules, such as traveling on the platform (Miharu), others who try to help the collective to ensure the triumph of all, although they are not taken into account. And then there are others (Baharat and Goreng) who in their madness and desire for a change decided to take a message to the administrators of the system, even if they died in the attempt. The idea was to see their wishes materialize, so they were full of hope and that made them act.
If we see well the theme of the poor distribution of resources is addressed, keeping in relation with the model of capitalism, where what matters are the profits and the concentration of power rather than the common welfare. So it can be considered as a film that criticizes this system. Or it could be extrapolated to any institution or organization that is managed in this way. It touches on themes of postmodern theory that now call for the need for the reduction of differences and the search for equality.
The film also uses symbols that show some belief systems (religion), the family institution, the shortcomings in public administration. The ending of this film remains open, it is not known what happens, it leaves it to the imagination, some might be surprised, others will be hopeful and others will connect with pessimism. So I invite you to watch this film and imagine the ending and, of course also to reflect on social issues and how we can evolve as human beings.
I share with you the link to the trailer so you know more about what it is about, and if you decide to watch it I hope you enjoy it and then tell me what you thought of this 2019 Spanish film that won several Goya awards.
