We often focus on the negative and fairly well proven health effects of drugs, but we hardly ever stop to think about what drives human beings to fall into them. I personally believe that it is much deeper than just going and abstracting yourself a bit from the conjectures of everyday life, from how harsh some realities can be, or as an escape from so many problems. This is clearer in films such as Requiem For A Dream, where although two of the four main characters tend towards substance abuse, it is no less true that the rest (the other two, curiously women) did not start there. And if you think logically, drugs only give you something: joy, euphoria, comfort, pleasure. All elements that you have experienced but miss.
Harry, Marion, Tyrone and Sara, four fictional characters that we will see in Requiem For A Dream, in them revolves the plot of drug abuse, but also of deep dissatisfaction, emotional emptiness, incomprehension and chronic loneliness. Which is fundamental to understanding this strangely uncomfortable film to watch. Over the years it has become a cult film but I won't lie to you that if you haven't seen it you will find it too acidic and harsh to watch. It's impossible not to empathise with the characters, even if you disagree with them and what they do. You see, in the case of the main protagonist's mother, played by Jared Leto, "Susan", being alone (she's been a widow for years), with an only son who steals from her and treats her badly, in a huge space and with no one by her side, makes her turn to abusive television viewing. To the point of believing what she sees there, and distorting her reality about what she really needs in her life.
Muchas veces nos centramos en los efectos negativos y bastante bien probados de las drogas en la salud, pero casi nunca nos detenemos a pensar en qué lleva a los seres humanos a caer en ellas. Creo, personalmente, que es mucho más profundo que solo ir y abstraerte un poco de las conjeturas de la vida cotidiana, de lo duro que pueden ser algunas realidades, o como una vía de escape ante tantos problemas. Esto, se ve más claro en cintas como Requiem For A Dream, donde si bien dos de sus 4 protagonistas tienden hacia el abuso de sustancias, no por éso, es menos cierto que el resto (los otros dos, curiosamente mujeres) no iniciaron allí. Y es que si se piensa con lógica, las drogas solo te dan algo: alegría, euforia, comodidad, placer. Todos, elementos que has experimentado pero que extrañas.
Harry, Marion, Tyrone y Sara, con cuatro personajes ficticios que veremos en Requiem For A Dream, en ellos gira la trama de abusos de drogas, pero también de profunda insatisfacción, vacío emocional, incomprensión y soledad crónica. Misma que es fundamental para entender este film tan extrañamente incómodo para ver. Con los años se ha vuelto una película de culto pero no les mentiré que si no la han visto lo hallarán demasiado ácido y duro para ver. Es imposible no empatizar con los personajes, incluso si se está en desacuerdo con ellos y con lo que hacen. Verán, en el caso de la madre del protagonist principal, encarnado por Jared Leto, "Susan", el hallarse sola (Es viuda desde hace años), con un hijo único que le roba y la trata mal, además en un espacio enorme y sin nadie a su lado, hace que ésta derive en el abuso de consumir televisión. Al punto de creerse lo que allí ve, y distorsionar su realidad sobre lo que realmente necesita en su vida.
Added to this, to her inability to deal with the feeling of uselessness she felt, Sara adds the opinion of her neighbours who tell her that her life could improve if she tries to do something new (which, a priori, is not bad) but which makes her turn to television and become obsessed with a programme where they treat "weight loss" as a question of "attitude" and that it is possible to achieve by reducing certain foods and issues that will make "her life better, more juicy". So far so good, the problem is that these programmes are not on television to do a noble job, on the contrary, their aim is to provoke uncertainty, discomfort and above all doubts in those who consume them and then sell them "the solution". In other words, you create the demand, you offer "the supply".
Aunado a esto, a su incapacidad de tratar esa sensación de inutilidad tan marcada que sentía, pues Sara le agrega la opinión de sus vecinas que le dicen que su vida podría mejorar si intenta hacer algo nuevo (lo cual, a priori, no está mal) pero que hace que derive, una vez ante la televisión y se obsesione con un programa donde tratan la "pérdida de peso" como una cuestión de "actitud" y que es posible lograr reduciendo ciertas comidas y cuestiones que harán que "su vida sea mejor, más juicy". Hasta ahí todo bien, el problema es que estos programas no están en la televisión para hacer una labor noble, al contrario, su objetivos es provocar incertidumbre, incomodidad y sobre todo dudas en quienes lo consumen para luego venderles "la solución". Dicho de otro modo, creas la demanda, ofreces "la oferta".
Meanwhile, dragging along all the problems I have already described above, this poor lonely woman becomes obsessed with "being enough and fit enough" to be invited to the show. She daydreams of fitting into a red dress. That is when she goes to a doctor with dubious professional ethics, who prescribes her pills to "lose weight". The repeated consumption of this drug, superficially causes the effect she wanted but makes her addicted. It is not explained in the film, but I suspect it is amphetamines, because of the symptoms. Reddening of the skin, profuse sweating, uncontrollable grimacing of the teeth, and the false sense of pleasure, control and joy that comes from taking them, a cocktail that leads to the character's dissociation and near madness.
Harry and Tyrone are the two characters in this story where we see the effects of hard drugs most starkly. As with the first, the excess is so high, that it even leads him to lose an arm in a completely traumatic and strong way. This film is completely timeless. That means, it can be seen either at the time of its release (year 2000) or just after reading this review. The truth is that the cinematographic effects used by the director Darren Aronofsky, although somewhat controversial (because from the perspective of film resources, they are not the most technical and technological) but they are the most successful to convey the change that people have from the beginning of the film to the end.
Mientras tanto, arrastrando todos los problemas que ya he descrito anteriormente, esta pobre mujer solitaria, se obsesiona con "ser suficiente y apta" para ser invitada al show. Sueña despierta con calzar en talle para un vestido rojo. Es ahí donde acude a un médico con dudosa ética profesional, quien le receta píldoras para "perder peso". El consumo reiterado de este fármaco, superficialmente causa el efecto que ella deseaba pero la hace adicta. En el film no se explica, pero yo sospecho que se trata de anfetaminas, por los síntomas. Enrojecimiento de la piel, sudoración profusa, muecas incontrolables en los dientes, y la falsa sensación de placer, control y alegría que se obtiene al consumirlas. un cóctel que deriva en la disociación del personaje y en la cercanía a la locura.
Harry y Tyrone, son los dos personajes dentro de esta historia donde vemos con más crudeza los efectos de las drogas duras. Como con el primero, el exceso es tan alto, que inclusive lo lleva a perder un brazo de un modo completamente traumático y fuerte. Está película es completamente atemporal. Lo que quiere decir, que puede ser vista tanto en el tiempo de su lanzamiento (año 2000) o justo después de leer esta review. Lo cierto es que, los efectos cinematográficos empleados por el director Darren Aronofsky, aunque son algo controvertidos (porque desde la perspectiva de recursos para el cine, no son los más técnicos y tecnológicos) pero sí lo más acertados para transmitir el cambio que tienen los personas desde el inicio de la película hasta el final.
Harry destroys his life, but his life was already destroyed. From the very beginning. Stealing his mother's television set to get drugs, with the help of his friend who is just like him but for different reasons. Apparently (it is not clear from the plot) he had already been experimenting with drugs and the subculture that comes with drug use for a long time, but deep down he just feels totally alone, disappointed and missing his mother. Perhaps the single most heartbreaking flashback we see to his life in the entire film. This is how we see that behind the normal story of junkies, there is also the human aspect. That which they desperately seek to attend to, the pursuit of pleasure and happiness.
A series of shots intended to exemplify the effect of the consumption and absorption of drugs in the organism, previously function as an opening of each immersion of the protagonists with drugs. The colours are dark, dim, opaque, sad, muted, as the film unfolds. It begins with a sense that something is not right, and as it unfolds, the epiphany we had at the beginning does not betray us; on the contrary, in fact, it confirms the future in the worst way. The decadence and the implications it has for the mind but above all for the lives of the individuals who are part of this plot.
Harry destruye su vida, pero ya su vida venía destrozada. Desde el mismo inicio. Robando el televisor de su madre para conseguir drogas, con la ayuda de su amigo que es igual que él pero por motivos distintos. Aparentemente (no queda claro en la trama) él ya venía experimentando con drogas y con la subcultura que viene con el consumo desde hace tiempo, pero en el fondo solo se siente totalmente solo, decepcionado y extrañando a su mamá. Quizá, el único y más desgarrador flashback que vemos sobre su vida durante la totalidad del largometraje. Es así como vemos, que detrás de la historia normal de "junkies", también existe el aspecto humano. Éso que buscan atender desesperadamente, la búsqueda de placer y felicidad.
Una serie de tomas destinadas a ejemplificar el efecto del consumo, y absorción de la drogas en el organismo, previamente funcionan como opening de cada inmersión de los protagonistas tienen con las drogas. Los colores son oscuros, tenues, opacos, tristes, apagados, a medida que la película se desarrolla. Inicia con una sensación de que algo no está nada bien, y mientras va desarrollándose, la epifanía que tuvimos al comienzo no nos traiciona; al contrario, de hecho, nos confirma el futuro de la peor manera. La decadencia y las implicaciones que tiene para la mente pero sobre todo para la vida de los individuos que forman parte de esta trama.
This is where Marion, the girl with money, absent parents, possessions but not in a world where she seems to be lost and invisible, comes in for analysis. Beautiful, with a promising future but nowhere to really turn. She is the character most difficult to associate with degeneration, but who, masterfully, both writer and director take as an example of what might happen to those who believe that the drug problem only happens to the "poor or unlucky". Her beauty is so poignant, it is almost surreal to associate her with the last scenes of the film where she is simply a piece of human waste. A piece of meat to be consumed by a local drug dealer who repeatedly abuses her.
Es allí donde Marion, la chica con dinero, padres ausentes, con posesiones pero que no se halla en un mundo donde parece estar perdida e invisible, entra para el análisis. Bella, con un futuro prometedor pero sin un lugar a donde realmente acudir. Es el personaje que más cuesta asociar con la degeneración, pero que en plan magistral, tanto el guionista como el director, cogen de ejemplo de lo que podría sucederle a quienes creen que el problema de las drogas solo le ocurre a lo "pobres o mal afortunados". Su belleza es tan conmovedora, que resulta casi surrealista asociarla con las últimas escenas de la película donde ella es simplemente un despojo humano. Un pedazo de carne para ser consumido por un distribuidor local de drogas que abusa de ella reiteradamente.
As you can already guess, this film has one of the most revealing plot titles I have ever seen. Requiem For A Dream is its original name, but it is also an ode to destruction, the path that leads to the worst of deaths, that of the anima, the spirit. Where it's not just that you feel bad, but that it's all you, all your body and all your decisions, are evil itself. The most paradoxical and frankly gloomy thing about all this, is that just by watching this film we realise that they are not really malevolent subjects.
On the contrary, they are characters who turn to chemicals in order to escape from a society that they clearly can't correspond to. Harry, the best in his class, a prominent future, Marion, beautiful, young, intelligent and with money, Tyrone, a boy who misses his mother too much, whom he has disappointed and feels he does not deserve her forgiveness or to be by her side; and finally Susan, a lady who cannot find a reason to wake up every morning, and who sees that she is more lonely and sadder every day. So you see, if there is an ugly side to addiction and bad decisions, it is in Requiem For A Dream, a work of art.
Como ya pueden presuponer, esta película tiene uno de los títulos más reveladores de una trama que jamás haya podido ver. Requiem For A Dream, es su nombre original, pero también es la oda a la destrucción, el sendero que lleva a la peor de las muertes, la del ánima, el espíritu. Donde no solo es que te sientes mal, sino que eres todo tú, todo tu cuerpo y todas tus decisiones, son el mal en sí. Lo más paradójico y francamente tétrico de todo esto, es que con solo observar esta cinta nos damos cuenta que realmente no son sujetos malévolos.
Sino todo lo contrario, personajes que acuden a las sustancias químicas, para huir de una sociedad que claramente no pueden corresponder. Harry el mejor de su clase, un futuro prominente, Marion, bella, joven, inteligente y con dinero, Tyrone, un chico que extraña demasiado a su madre a quien ha decepcionado y siente que no merece su perdón ni estar a su lado; y por último Susan, una señora que no encuentra un motivo para despertar cada mañana, y que ve que está cada día más sola y más triste. Así como pueden ver, si hay una cara bastante fea de las adicciones y las malas decisiones, la hallamos en Requiem For A Dream, una obra de arte.
