Hello Hivers, this time I wanted to talk about another true-crime documentary that intrigues me the most. I had read about this case some years ago, so I was looking forward to the investigation and development of this miniseries, but after watching this series I have been disappointed by the particular inconsistencies that the American justice system had at that time.

The Confession Killer is a documentary type miniseries produced and directed by Robert Kenner and Taki Oldham released by the streaming service Netflix in 2019, with a duration of 5 episodes of more or less 1 hour this, commented by people linked to the case among them prosecutors, police, lawyers, friends and judges.

Henry Lee Lucas is a known American serial killer who is attributed between 150 and 600 crimes, so it was badly known as one of the bloodiest killers in history and now thanks to the information unveiled in this documentary we discover that perhaps Henry if he was a murderer but maybe he was not as prolific as it was said.

The story begins like any documentary describing his childhood, son of a disabled man and a self-confessed prostitute Henry Lee Lucas was born in 1936 in Virginia, United States. His mother humiliated him by making him dress as a girl, forcing him to watch her while she served her sexual clients. Henry and his father were victims of this woman's violence, which later became his first documented murder in 1959. For this murder he spent more than 11 years between prison and the psychiatric ward where he was diagnosed as a psychopath.

He was finally released in 1970 and decided to marry a close family friend who already had 2 daughters whom Henry would end up raping, after getting bored of this routine he decided to disappear and move to Florida, it is there where he met his friend and murder partner Ottis Toole a mentally retarded homosexual, cannibal and pyromaniac with whom he would start a horrible killing spree on American highways. Henry meets Ottis' 15 year old cousin Becky with whom he falls deeply in love. After many fights Henry kills his lover and an old woman for whom he had worked, for which he is arrested in 1983. After this event he proceeded to take the police to the place where he had buried the victims.

It is at this point that the documentary gets interesting, when the Texas Rangers create a task force to investigate and try to solve murders across the country. Cheriff Jim Botwell treated Henry as a friend, gaining his trust, manipulating evidence to get him to confess to a number of unsolved murders. From this fraternal relationship the documentary leaves us with many questions such as: Did this man really kill so many people? Or is it just one of the biggest lies ever told?

These questions were the same ones asked by the journalist Hugh Aynesworth who had interviews and exclusive access to the place where Henry was held, so much so that he began to investigate the veracity of these murders. After an arduous investigation that included touring the places where Henry had allegedly committed these crimes, he came to the conclusion that it was impossible for him to have been involved in so many murders across such a vast territory as the United States.

Cheriff Jim Botwell

Even more interesting is the arrival of the then newly appointed Prosecutor Vic Feazell who became interested in the case when he began to search the digital file of Henry Lee Lucas and was denied access. That inquiry made members of the Rangers uncomfortable and they began to intimidate the prosecutor with threats. Feazzell was the victim of a smear campaign that ended his career as a prosecutor.

More revealing would be the confessions of the families of one of the victims murdered in 1975 about the lies in this case. It was all a scam to frame one person and close cases that otherwise could not be closed due to the ineffectiveness of the Texas Rangers. This documentary type miniseries leaves us with many doubts about American justice and how those who dared to question the versions of these police officers were taken out of the way suffering reprisals that are still in force.

The creators of this documentary, I believe, had the intention of raising awareness and reopening thousands of cases that still deserve to be solved. What is really true is that this investigation becomes more interesting when you look at the way the police acted, who seemed to be more interested in closing cases than in giving justice to the victims' families, causing the real culprits to still be loose in the streets.

In the end, Henry Lee Lucas was condemned to the death penalty, which was commuted in 1998 by the then governor of Texas, George W. Bush, one of the governors who allowed the most death sentences and who later became president of the United States. Henry would spend his last days regretting his words and finally died in 2001, victim of a fulminant heart attack. It was the end of a myth that was far from being the most prolific criminal in modern American history and was instead a compulsive liar and a miscarriage of American justice.

You definitely have to see this gem of a documentary, for me it is one of the best I have seen in its genre. I give it a 9/10 and I hope you decide to watch it.
