Few TV series have left me with that kind of nostalgic feeling as Pose did, since its first season I felt identified with each of the characters, their personal struggles, their failures, their successes and the life they led in the era in which it is set. The 80's was a very hard period for the LGTBIQ+ community (the most affected segment of the population), the AIDS pandemic claimed the lives of millions of people before an effective treatment against it was found, it is precisely in that decade in which the story of Pose emerges in its maximum splendor.

But before talking about Pose we must mention the most important aspect of the series: The Ball Culture a movement created in New York by the community in the 1920s. At first only white men could participate in these competitions, African-American and Latino men who wanted to participate had to lighten their faces to be admitted. This led racial minorities to create their own Ball in the 60's becoming a safe space where everyone could express themselves, without fear. Also known as Ballroom, it is a competition where colors and diversity are celebrated and where participants show their talent in different branches such as dancing, singing, dressmaking and where the most important thing is the categories. Usually the people who come to the Ball are marginalized by society or by their own families, which led to the creation of the "Houses" or "Families" that compete as a team for the trophies. In each "House" or "Family" there is a "Mother" who is usually a transsexual woman.

The Voguing is another element to highlight, born as part of the choreography of one of the African-American "Houses" in the 60's, so called because it imitates the poses of the models that appeared in Vogue magazine and later popularized by Madonna in her 1990 hit "Vogue".

E S P

Pose is an HBO television series written and produced by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuck and Steve Canals of which 2 seasons have already been released, consisting of 8 and 10 episodes respectively, with an estimated running time of 50 minutes per episode. The story begins when Bianca (MJ Rodriguez) a trans woman, decides to become independent from the "House" of her "Mother" Elektra Wintour (Dominique Jackson) the most iconic thing that this series has; to become "Mother" and found her own "House" called Evangelist in which she will later take in several "Children" among them Angel (Indya Moore) a transsexual woman who prostitutes herself on the boardwalk, Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain) a teenage boy rejected by his family, Esteban "Lil Papi" Martinez-Evangelista (Angel Bismark Curiel) a handsome straight dealer and finally Ricky Evangelista/Wintour (Dyllon Burnside) Damon's ex-boyfriend.

Pose is defined from the first moment as a series difficult to forget, with stellar performances such as Billy Porter giving life to the endearing Pray Tell master of ceremony of the New York balls, for which he won a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Alongside them we have 2 fun characters Candy Johnson-Ferocity (Angelica Ross) and Lulu Ferocity (Hailie Sahar) 2 transsexual women founders of the Ferocity House.

House of Evangelista

The series tackles issues such as the legal problems transgender people faced (and unfortunately still face) in order to be accepted or have their rights enforced. I loved that the cast included transgender actresses why? Because it's great that they themselves can tell the stories they identify with, it's not just about being inclusive but more about making these people visible in the entertainment industry. Celebrating gender identity, the freedom to be able to decide who you love or how you want to identify yourself is something I really appreciate seeing on television. Pose is all of that, it's art, dance scenes, bonding and above all a lot of Extravaganza.

It definitely needed a series like this (as novelistic as it may seem) that touches the hearts of all those viewers who choose it in some marathon. Racism, homophobia and transphobia are still present and perhaps will continue to be present but I find it positive that they are recreated in a subtle way. We now look at drag and trans people with different eyes thanks to the awareness that has been achieved with shows that portray these stories. Ryan Murphy has become almost an LGTBIQ+ activist making his contributions as a showrunner from television and although many don't like his work I love it and he has found in Pose the way to pay tribute to the transgender women who were so important in the fight for the rights of the LGTBIQ+ community.

Pray tell is one of the best characters that (for me) have ever existed, you will have a lot of fun with his "readings", Elektra has become an icon in the community and I love that this series is full of people that until its premiere were unknown. We still need more inclusive casts, more varied and of different races and genders, we need a more representative society with a more open vision where we all fit.

As the series progresses we get a lot of information about the era and especially about the ravages of AIDS on most of the characters, the series is tough in that aspect. However, at the end of the day the series is funny and above all very touching. You get so attached to the characters and their stories that you don't want them to die.

The music is also important in Pose I remember with great affection several songs from the soundtrack including Loves Takes Time by Mariah Carey and the version of The Star Spangled Banner by Whitney Houston.

I'm also excited by the message that between the lines the series leaves that when they mess with one member of the community they mess with everyone. No other series or movie had ever transmitted so many emotions to me. I laughed, I cried and I identified a lot with Pose maybe because I always remember Rupaul's phrase that says “We as gay people get to choose our family and the people we’re around”. So be sure to watch this wonderful gem whose final season premieres in May this year. In the meantime I give its first 2 seasons a 10/10, ten ten tens Across the Board!
