While I was searching for what series to watch on Netflix, I stumbled upon a miniseries about a football player I read about a few years ago. I've never been interested in sports but don't get me wrong, it's nothing sporty that brings me here, but the tale of the rise and fall of a National Football League (NFL) star the story of a young dreamer who was never able to live his sexuality and whose life was marked by problems since his childhood.
Before we begin to talk about this documentary we must first delve into the life of its protagonist: Aaron Hernandez. Aaron Josef Hernandez was the name of the youngest son of Dennis Hernandez of Puerto Rican descent and Terri Hernandez of Italian origins. His father was a relentless football coach who died when Aaron was just 16 years old. He only had one brother whose name is Dennis Junior.

Mientras buscaba que serie ver en Netflix, me topé con una miniserie sobre un jugador de futbol americano sobre el cual leí hace unos cuantos años. Nunca he estado interesado en los deportes pero no me malentiendan, no es nada deportivo lo que me trae aquí, sino el relato del auge y caída de una estrella de la National Football League (NFL) la historia de un joven soñador que nunca pudo vivir su sexualidad y cuya vida estuvo marcada por los problemas desde su infancia.
Antes de comenzar a hablar de este documental primero debemos adentrarnos en la vida de su protagonista: Aaron Hernandez. Aaron Josef Hernandez era el nombre del menor de los hijos de Dennis Hernandez de ascendencia puertorriqueña y Terri Hernandez de orígenes italianos. Su Padre era un entrenador de Futbol implacable el cual murió cuando Aaron apenas tenía 16 años. Solo tenía un hermano cuyo nombre es Dennis Junior.
In 2020 the streaming service Netflix released a 3-episode documentary type miniseries with a duration of about 1 hour, produced by Geno McDermott which focuses on the life of the athlete from his childhood to his tragic end and the circumstances that made him become a cold-blooded murderer to the point of impacting the American society assiduous to this sport.
Aaron had it all, he was one of the young promises of one of the most powerful sports teams in the world the New England Patriots, everything seemed to be going well since he was hired in 2010 with a contract extension signed in 2012 that assured him a place in that team until 2018. But everything would change in 2013 when the player was arrested for being the main suspect in the murder of his friend who was also the boyfriend of his sister-in-law Odin Lloyd for which he was finally convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
En el 2020 el servicio de streaming Netflix estrenó una miniserie de tipo documental de 3 episodios con una duración de más o menos 1 hora, producido por Geno McDermott el cual se centra en la vida del deportista desde su infancia hasta su trágico final y las circunstancias que le hicieron convertirse en un asesino de sangre fría al punto de impactar la sociedad estadounidense asidua a este deporte.
Aaron lo tenía todo, era una de las jóvenes promesas de uno de los equipos deportivos más poderosos del mundo los New England Patriots, todo parecía marchar bien desde que fue contratado en 2010 con una extensión de su contrato firmada en 2012 que le aseguraba un puesto en ese equipo hasta 2018. Pero todo cambiaria en 2013 cuando el jugador fue detenido por ser el principal sospechoso del asesinato de su amigo el cual era también el novio de su cuñada Odin Lloyd por el cual finalmente fue declarado culpable y sentenciado a cadena perpetua.
To unravel the causes that led Hernandez to become a convicted murderer, the documentary explores the anecdotes of people who were within his circle of friends from teammates, childhood friends, lawyers and even Aaron's own conversations recorded from jail. The first thing that struck me were the problems in accepting his sexuality which for me was the saddest part of the story, a sweet boy terrorized by his macho father who refused to accept his homosexuality and on the contrary did what he could to fit into the masculinity that was demanded of him. The Football is a rough and very masculine sport where heterosexuality is exalted.
Particularly striking were the comments of Dennis SanSoucie who described the sexual encounters they both had in high school and his own problems accepting his sexuality. According to Dennis the anger expressed by the athlete was rooted in his fear of coming to terms with his identity. Aaron. It was very moving to see the testimony of former Football player Ryan O'Callaghan with whom Aaron also had a romantic relationship while they were both still playing for the Patriots. It was very inspiring to hear his process of coming to terms with his homosexuality and how his parents accepted him without hesitation.
Para desentrañar las causas que llevaron a Hernandez a convertirse en un asesino convicto, el documental explora las anécdotas de personas que estaban dentro de su círculo de amigos desde compañeros de equipo, amigos de la infancia, abogados y hasta conversaciones del propio Aaron grabadas desde la cárcel. Lo primero que me impactó fueron los problemas para aceptar su sexualidad lo cual para mí fue lo más triste de la historia, un chico dulce aterrorizado por su machista padre que se negaba a aceptar su homosexualidad y que por el contrario hizo lo que pudo para encajar en la masculinidad que se le exigía. No la tenía fácil el futbol americano es un deporte rudo y muy masculino donde se exalta la heterosexualidad.
Fueron particularmente sorprendentes los comentarios de Dennis SanSoucie que describió los encuentros sexuales que ambos tuvieron en la secundaria y sus propios problemas para aceptar su sexualidad. Según Dennis la rabia expresada por el deportista tenían sus raíces en el miedo que le daba aceptar su identidad. Aaron. Fue muy emotivo ver el testimonio del ex jugador de futbol americano Ryan O’Callaghan con quien Aaron también mantuvo una relación amorosa mientras los 2 aún estaban jugando para los Patriots. Fue muy inspirador escuchar su proceso para aceptar su homosexualidad y como sus padres lo aceptaron sin dudar.

Aaron also did not have a good relationship with his father, a sexist, alcoholic and violent father who beat him and whom Aaron feared. I was shocked by a testimony that recounted how his father once hit him with the sink, until he was left unconscious on the floor. He also did not have a better relationship with his mother Terri, in fact during the telephone recordings you can hear many reproaches and accusations. One of the hardest moments during the documentary is when Aaron tells his mother "You're going to die and you never knew your son, that's the craziest thing of all ". His mother figure was replaced by his cousin Anya Singleton who was suffering from cancer and would eventually die in 2015. Particularly sad are Aaron's words after learning of his cousin's death.
Another thing that came up during the documentary was what happened to Aaron's brain after he committed suicide in 2017. A day after he committed suicide the family agreed to donate the athlete's brain for study in order to uncover details that would explain Aaron's behavior. The discoveries would be overwhelming indeed Aaron Hernandez suffered from a serious disease that particularly I was unaware of: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) a disease caused by frequent head trauma and affecting the brain. Aaron's case was the most advanced case of CTE in a young person ever documented according to neurologist and commentator on the documentary Ann McKeeque its symptoms include aggression, emotional dyscontrol, stress, depression and dementia. Football has been under investigation for years because of the high risk that its players have of suffering from this disease. But even if we try to decipher what happened to Aaron to commit this homicide, we will probably never know.
Aaron tampoco tuvo una relación buena con su padre un machista, alcohólico y violento que lo golpeaba y a quien Aaron temía. Me impacto mucho un testimonio que relataba como su papa lo golpeó en una oportunidad con el lavamanos, hasta dejarlo inconsciente en el piso. Tampoco tuvo una mejor relación con su madre Terri de hecho durante las grabaciones telefónicas se logran escuchar muchos reproches y acusaciones. Uno de los momentos más duros durante el documental es cuando en una oportunidad Aaron le dice a su madre “Te vas a morir y nunca conociste a tu hijo, eso es lo más loco de todo”. La figura de su madre fue reemplazada por su prima Anya Singleton quien sufría de cáncer y finalmente moriría en 2015. Son particularmente tristes las palabras de Aaron luego de enterarse de la muerte de su prima.
Otra de las cosas que salieron a relucir durante el documental fue lo que pasó con el cerebro de Aaron luego de suicidarse en 2017. Un día después de suicidarse la familia acordó donar el cerebro del deportista para su estudio en fin de dar a conocer detalles que explicaran el comportamiento de Aaron. Los descubrimientos serian abrumadores en efecto Aaron Hernandez padecía de una grave enfermedad que particularmente yo desconocía: la encefalopatía traumática crónica (ETC) una enfermedad ocasionada por los traumatismos craneales frecuentes y que afecta el cerebro. El caso de Aaron fue el caso mas avanzado de ETC en una persona joven jamás documentado según la neuróloga y comentarista del documental Ann McKeeque entre sus síntomas están la agresividad, descontrol emocional, estrés, depresión y demencia. El futbol americano ha estado por años en investigación por el alto riesgo que tienen sus jugadores de padecer esta enfermedad. Pero aunque tratásemos de descifrar que fue lo que paso con Aaron para cometer dicho homicidio probablemente, nunca lo sepamos.

It's unfortunate that such a handsome, vibrant and successful young man squandered his chance to shine in the NFL where he had even achieved the greatest dream of any player in the sport: to play in the Super Bowl. I keep thinking that maybe if we had a more open society where who you sleep with was not a topic of conversation Aaron and Odin might still be alive, maybe we will never know what a shame because in the end his daughter missed her father. We have nothing left to do but learn from each other's mistakes and not waste time judging each other.
Es lamentable que un joven tan guapo, lleno de vida y exitoso haya malgastado su oportunidad de brillar en la NFL donde incluso había alcanzado el mayor sueño de cualquier jugador de este deporte: jugar en el Súper bawl. No dejo de pensar en que quizás si tuviéramos una sociedad más abierta, donde con quien te acuestas no fuera tema de conversación Aaron y Odin quizás estuvieran vivos, quizás nunca lo sabremos, que lastima porque al final su hija se perdió a su padre. No nos queda más que aprender de los errores de los demás y no perder el tiempo en juzgarnos los unos con los otros.
