A few months ago after so much insistence my boyfriend finally agreed to watch with me the recently released documentary of The New York Times transmitted by the streaming service Hulu called Framing Britney. I thought it was just going to be a tribute to the life of one of the most iconic stars of the 21st century but I ended up reflecting on many things that once seemed normal and now seem like unfortunate events that happened to the Princess of Pop.

When you grow up being a fan of a star we normalize toxic attitudes towards them, forgetting that they are human beings like us mortals and therefore suffer from the same insecurities and perhaps more anxiety just because they are famous.

Britney Spears is an American singer born in 1981 starting as a teenage star to become one of the most successful singers of our times, controversial, sweet, iconic and one of the idols of the LGTBQI+ community, we must travel a little back to know her and for that we must go into her career perhaps in the early 90's when she got her first break. Britney was a humble girl from a town called Kentwood in Michigan whose dream was to sing and dance. Her first opportunity came when she auditioned for the show The Mickey Mouse Club where, along with other well-known figures such as Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake, she got her start in show business. After finishing her contract in 1995 she moved back to her hometown where she returned to being a normal girl.

After that period would come what has been until now one of the most successful debuts in the history of music, her first album "Baby one more time" released in 1999 which included her first hit that bore the same name of the album which quickly reached number 1 in the main charts of the time breaking with the success of the bands of the moment as The Backstreet boys or Nsyc. The documentary reviews his beginnings and how he achieved success by working tirelessly to make his dreams come true.

After the success of his first album, she returned to music with Oops! I Did It Again (2000) from which hits such as Oops!.... I Did It Again, Lucky and Stonger marking another success in her career. Then would follow Britney (2001) with songs like "I'm slave 4 U" and "Overprotected". 2003 would be a difficult year with the controversial and iconic performance with Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott at the MTV music awards. The kiss she gave with Madonna and the close up they did to Justin Timberlake's face are part of popular culture. This year she also released his album "In The Zone" which contains the hit "Toxic" the song for which she won the only Grammy of his career.

Then came "Blackout" which marked her return after 4 years of absence and her mental health problems, from that album could be mentioned the emblematic "Gimme More" whose presentation at the MTV music award is one of the most controversial in history. It took 10 years for her to get her second number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her hit "Womanizer" included in her 2008 album "Circus". In 2011 would come "Femme Fatale" and with this another song that would reach the top with "Hold It Against Me". The flop (commercial failure) would come with her 2013 album *"Britney Jean"+ of which the only redeemable is "Work Bitch" to finish with her last studio album released to date "Glory" (2016) which I thought was one of her best albums and that I think should have had more success of this I can mention songs like "Make Me...and "Slumber Party".

I Did It Again, Lucky y Stonger marcando otro éxito en su carrera.

But not everything was rosy in the documentary portrays the sexualization that Britney was a victim of in her early days, one episode in particular caught my attention in which a television entertainer asked her if she had a boyfriend when Britney was just a child. Women in the industry are always minimized to sexual products leaving aside their musical contributions.

The documentary also describes the misogyny on the part of her ex-boyfriend, the well-known singer Justin Timberlake, with whom she had a relationship in the early 2000s. Britney had assured in an interview that she wanted to be a virgin at marriage. When Britney and Justin ended their relationship, time later Timberlake was asked if they had had sexual relations to which he answered yes, causing the interviewer to laugh. This episode seems far away since it dates back to 2003, but the tabloids went after Britney, making her look like the bad guy. However Justin publicly apologized last February for the moral damage to the singer through a message posted on his Instagram account in which he expressed "I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments and concerns and I wanted to respond. I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke of turn or did not speak up for what was right. I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism."

The documentary Framing Britney has come out amid the "Free Britney" public movement advocating for the freedom of the singer whose legal guardianship was obtained by her father James Spears since 2008. Her father was absent during the path to stardom of the pop princess who was always accompanied by her mother Lynne Spears. This has embroiled Britney in a legal battle to regain guardianship of her estate leading the singer to refuse to release a new album until she regains the right to make her own decisions.

After the separation with her husband Kevin Fiderline, Britney had problems with the custody of her children, due to her mental health problems that began with her stormy friendship with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. What at the beginning began as a temporary legal guardianship ended up being in force to this day. The truth is that The New York Times documentary was received positively by critics, adding celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker to the worldwide #Freebritney movement.

Britney herself said, "Having cried for 2 weeks after Framing Britney" is that by the end of the documentary the only thing that is clear is how much damage has been done to the pop princess over the years. Best of all, in February a judge rejected her father's request to manage 100% of Britney's estate, which she will now have to administer in the company of an investment fund.

What I would like to see happen is for the legal guardianship to end once and for all and let her emerge as what she is, a global phenomenon that we love and whose music her fans treasure. If you haven't seen it I recommend it, because it talks about current things that no longer have to be allowed such as misogyny, sexism, machismo and respect for other people's mental health, definitely a gem for all of us who are asking for a #Freebritney.
