Sweet Home (7/10) - Entertaining and original Korean zombie series from Netflix

This is curious but the last productions I have seen from Korea have been all about zombies. The most recent one apart from Sweet Home was a movie called #Alive. Years before that I also remember watching this cool zombie movie called Train to Busan. There is even an apparently good Korean zombie series called Kingdom that I haven't watched yet. So, it is clear that zombie stories are very popular in South Korea.

The latest installment is this fun series Sweet Home I just finished watching. The setting, in this case, is similar to the one in the movie #Alive, but instead of being just one guy trapped in an apartment, we have an entire building with the people living there trapped and terrorized by really crazy zombies/monsters.

The zombies in this series aren't your regular zombies. They are almost immortal mutants or monsters and they develop unique capabilities that can be considered superpowers. The one thing they have in common with regular zombies is that they cannot control themselves for the most part, and the majority of them have a liking for killing people.

The first half of the series is a bit more intriguing and entertaining than the second half. It introduces several originally designed zombies/monsters, and its action/drama sequences are entertaining enough. Eventually, the intrigue is just not the same but still worth watching.

Being an apocalypse story, we will see a lot of hostility between the characters as time goes on, they will also face very dangerous situations and get used to seeing characters dying. However, most of these deaths won't be impactful for the viewers.

The zombies/monsters are ugly but there is not excessive gore in this series. There is some blood and stuff like that but nothing extreme. This is mainly an action story with some dark fantasy elements. It is not scary but I guess some monsters can be a bit shocking for viewers who aren't used to ugly faces.

If you like stories about zombies this one would be a good choice to watch. The mutations humans suffer in this case turn them into something like monsters and not the traditional zombie but the dynamic between these hostile ugly beings and regular humans is just the same.

The best

  • Very entertaining action series.
  • These are the best zombies/monsters I have seen in my life. Very creative designs all around.

The worst

  • The second half of the season wasn't as exciting, and it had fewer zombies/monsters.
  • I was interested in seeing more zombies/monsters, especially one that appeared to have been a giant.
