Possessor Uncut (7/10) - Dark scifi flick with a bit of horror

I have been wanting to see this movie for quite some time so I was kind of excited about it. After watching it, I can say it was entertaining but I was expecting something better, more focused on the horror, and darker with the psychological topics it explores.

The film is about a mysterious organization that kills people for hire. The scifi part consists of a technology that allows them to take control of a person's body after inserting a small device in the brain. This insertion is usually done after kidnapping the person, and once the device is in, one of the assassins is connected to a special machine, goes to sleep, and wakes up in the body of the person with the chip. I couldn't stop thinking this chip might as well be similar to a real-life future version of what Elon Musk has been developing with his company Neuralink.

After taking control of the victim's body, the assassin's next task is to kill whatever person was specified in the contract, and once the killing is done, the assassins need to commit suicide in order to kill the person with the chip. This suicide doesn't hurt the assassin's actual body, and the chip ends up dissolving itself so there is nothing connecting them with these killings.

The problem is that constantly changing bodies and killing people can take a toll on the psychological health of the assassins. This is the case with their main assassin Tasya portrayed by the actress Andrea Riseborough. She begins to have issues to properly finish her assassin's tasks, and not only that, we will also learn that she has been kind of losing herself and being unable to interact like a normal person in her family life. Something is clearly going on with her.

Sadly, the plot feels like it was just the beginning of something much darker. The most interesting parts happen with the second assassin job, but despite the fact the idea behind the plot was original, I felt underwhelmed, it wasn't as shocking or horrific as I was hoping. It is still worth watching, but I think most viewers will think this could have been better.

If you have enjoyed the Black Mirror series, this could easily be considered as a longer than usual Black Mirror episode, this is not horror but rather a psychological thriller. This type of dark plot with futuristic technology is typical of that series, so if you enjoyed that show you will certainly have a good time with Possessor Uncut. However, if Possessor Uncut was a Black Mirror episode it wouldn't be the best one.

The best

  • Interesting futuristic concept.

The worst

  • I was expecting more horror, this was hardly a horror movie. It was more like an action/thriller film with a dark plot.
