Some time ago I saw this cool initiative created by @beatriche, that consisted of sharing our favorite romantic films and briefly explaining why we like these films so much. In my case, the romance genre isn't one I enjoyed for most of my life. I thought those movies were mostly boring and didn't have much entertainment to offer. However, in a similar way as to what happened with the drama genre, my taste in films began to expand and I ended up appreciating some films from the romantic genre.

I still don't enjoy much of the films from this genre, to be honest, but there are some of them that I truly consider masterpieces and I have loved watching them. I have even watched some of these films more than one time, such as the case of Your Name, Lost in Translation, and Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind.

The films I will share below are in my opinion must-watch movies, some of those not only from the romantic genre but also from others genres such as scifi, anime, or drama. Without further ado, let's begin talking about them.

Hace un tiempo vi esta genial iniciativa creada por @beatriche, que consistía en compartir nuestras películas románticas favoritas y explicar brevemente por qué nos gustan tanto estas películas. En mi caso, el género romántico no es el que disfruté durante la mayor parte de mi vida. Pensé que esas películas eran en su mayoría aburridas y no tenían mucho entretenimiento que ofrecer. Sin embargo, de manera similar a lo que sucedió con el género dramático, mi gusto por el cine comenzó a expandirse y terminé apreciando algunas películas del género romántico.

Todavía no disfruto mucho de las películas de este género, para ser honesto, pero hay algunas que realmente considero obras maestras y me encantó verlas. Incluso he visto algunas de estas películas más de una vez, como el caso de Your Name, Lost in Translation y Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind.

Las películas que compartiré a continuación son, en mi opinión, películas imprescindibles, algunas de las cuales no solo pertenecen al género romántico, sino también a otros géneros como ciencia ficción, anime o drama. Sin más preámbulos, comencemos a hablar de ellas.

Your Name is an anime film created by Makoto Shinkai, who I consider a genius because he has created several romantic anime stories and all of them are very touching. Some of those stories are 5 centimeters per second, which is an extremely touching story, Weathering with you, this one could be compared with Your Name but I consider Your Name to be better, and The Garden of Words. If you haven't seen any film from Makoto Shinkai, I would highly recommend you to give them a watch.

I think Your Name is not only his best work so far but is also a masterpiece because it has a combination of intense moments, a great soundtrack, and an awesome plot, and all of this results in an unforgettable experience that I am sure most people will enjoy. I know there might be people that think anime cannot have touching stories, but this story and others from the same creator prove otherwise.

The story of Your Name is about 2 teens that one day discover they are magically linked somehow. If you have seen the Netflix series Sense8, the link between those characters is similar but not exactly the same as the link between the 2 teens in Your Name. There are a few silly scenes shortly after they discover they are linked, but soon enough things will get very serious and intense. The story has some fantasy elements but is mostly about romance and drama. It is an extremely original story and there is even a live-action remake from Hollywood in the works but I really recommend watching the original anime.

Your Name es una película de anime creada por Makoto Shinkai, a quien considero un genio porque ha creado varias historias románticas de anime y todas son muy conmovedoras. Algunas de esas historias son 5 centimeters per second, la cual es una historia extremadamente conmovedora, Weathering with you, esta podría compararse con Your Name pero considero que Your Name es mejor, y The Garden of Words. Si no has visto ninguna película de Makoto Shinkai, te recomiendo encarecidamente que les des un vistazo.

Creo que Your Name no solo es su mejor trabajo hasta ahora, sino que también es una obra maestra porque tiene una combinación de momentos intensos, una gran banda sonora y una trama increíble, y todo esto resulta en una experiencia inolvidable que estoy seguro de que la mayoría de la gente disfrutará. Sé que puede haber personas que piensen que el anime no puede tener historias conmovedoras, pero esta historia y otras del mismo creador demuestran lo contrario.

La historia de Your Name trata de 2 adolescentes que un día descubren que están vinculados mágicamente de alguna manera. Si has visto la serie Sense8 de Netflix, el vínculo entre esos personajes es similar pero no exactamente el mismo que el vínculo entre los 2 adolescentes de Your Name. Hay algunas escenas tontas poco después de que descubren que están vinculados, pero pronto las cosas se pondrán muy serias e intensas. La historia tiene algunos elementos de fantasía, pero se trata principalmente de romance y drama. Es una historia extremadamente original e incluso hay un remake con actores reales de Hollywood en proceso, pero realmente recomiendo ver el anime original.

Lost in Translation is one of my favorite films with Scarlett Johansson without taking into account all of her Avengers films of course. She and Bill Murray play 2 Americans that are currently spending time in Tokyo and for several reasons, they are feeling lonely and kind of disconnected from the world.

Johansson's character is with her husband but he is super busy with his work and doesn't have much time to pay attention to his wife, and Murray's character is also working in Tokyo but he seems a bit depressed and tired. They suddenly see each other by chance one night and a connection forms between them.

This a story where 2 people feeling lonely in a foreign place find refuge in each other during a time when they thought they were forced to endure general discomfort. Being with each other will make them feel loved, cared for, and at peace with their personal issues. Their time together can be even considered therapeutic for both of them. It has a touching ending but the movie isn't really sad, it even has a few fun moments. If you are a fan of either Johansson, Murray, or of the romantic genre, you should give this film a watch.

Lost in Translation es una de mis películas favoritas con Scarlett Johansson sin tener en cuenta todas sus películas de Los Vengadores, por supuesto. Ella y Bill Murray interpretan a dos estadounidenses que actualmente pasan tiempo en Tokio y, por varias razones, se sienten solos y desconectados del mundo.

El personaje de Johansson está con su esposo, pero está muy ocupado con su trabajo y no tiene mucho tiempo para prestar atención a su esposa, y el personaje de Murray también está trabajando en Tokio, pero parece un poco deprimido y cansado. De repente se ven por casualidad una noche y se forma una conexión entre ellos.

Esta es una historia en la que 2 personas que se sienten solas en un lugar extraño y encuentran refugio el uno en el otro durante un momento en el que pensaban que se veían obligados a soportar unna incomodidad general. Estar juntos los hará sentirse amados, cuidados y en paz con sus problemas personales. Su tiempo juntos puede incluso considerarse terapéutico para ambos. Tiene un final conmovedor, pero la película no es realmente triste, incluso tiene algunos momentos divertidos. Si eres fan de Johansson of Murray o del género romántico, deberías mirar esta película.

Jim Carrey is an actor best known for his excellent performance in all sorts of comedies. I remember when I was a kid I watched Fun with Dick and Jane more than 10 times, I just loved that film so much. However, this actor has also participated in serious productions and can easily adapt to other genres. The Number 23 is the best example I can think of, a film that is the opposite of a comedy and Carrey still does a good job with his role.

With Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, we see Carrey playing a young guy in love with his girlfriend but also suffering from typical complications that young couples usually go through. The girlfriend is played by an excellent actress, Kate Winslet, who also has a very extensive and successful career in the acting world.

This story takes place in a society where a modern technology has been developed that allows people to erase their memories about bad experiences, traumas, and similar things. This technology can also be used to erase memories about people, places, and anything you can think of. I guess you can already imagine what is the plot all about am I right?

The best scenes of this film are when the erasing procedure is taking place, and we see what's going on in the mind of the person going through the procedure. The film portrays in a very appropriate manner the weird nature of dreams, and the strange things that can happen while we dream even if we are aware that we are dreaming. Those scenes obviously belong to the scifi genre but they are also a great complement to the general romantic plot of the film.

We will see how the internal battle one character goes through when he regrets deciding to delete some precious memories and does everything he can to stop the procedure while in his sleep. The film is a very original romantic story, and will probably satisfy both fans of that genre as well as scifi fans.

Jim Carrey es un actor mejor conocido por su excelente actuación en todo tipo de comedias. Recuerdo que cuando era niño vi Las locuras de Dick y Jane más de 10 veces, porque me encantaba mucho esa película. Sin embargo, este actor también ha participado en producciones serias y puede adaptarse fácilmente a otros géneros. La peli que se llama el número 23 es el mejor ejemplo que se me ocurre, una película que es lo opuesto a una comedia y Carrey logra hacer un buen trabajo con su papel.

Con Eterno resplandor de una mente sin recuerdos, vemos a Carrey interpretando a un joven enamorado de su novia pero que también sufre las típicas complicaciones por las que suelen pasar las parejas jóvenes. La novia es interpretada por una excelente actriz, Kate Winslet, quien también tiene una carrera muy extensa y exitosa en el mundo de la actuación.

Esta historia tiene lugar en una sociedad donde se ha desarrollado una tecnología moderna que permite a las personas borrar sus recuerdos sobre malas experiencias, traumas y cosas similares. Esta tecnología también se puede utilizar para borrar recuerdos sobre personas, lugares y cualquier cosa que se te ocurra. Supongo que ya puedes imaginar de qué se trata la trama, ¿verdad?

Las mejores escenas de esta película son cuando se lleva a cabo el procedimiento de borrado y vemos lo que está pasando en la mente de la persona que está pasando por el procedimiento. La película retrata de manera muy apropiada la naturaleza extraña de los sueños y las cosas extrañas que pueden suceder mientras soñamos, incluso si somos conscientes de que estamos soñando. Esas escenas, obviamente, pertenecen al género de ciencia ficción, pero también son un gran complemento para la trama romántica general de la película.

Veremos cómo la batalla interna que atraviesa un personaje cuando se arrepiente de haber decidido borrar algunos recuerdos preciosos y hace todo lo posible para detener el procedimiento mientras duerme. Finally, we have this great romantic trilogy, the Before trilogy. This is probably the most traditional romantic story of the ones I mentioned in this post. The 3 films are directed by Richard Linklater and the 2 main characters are played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

The trilogy begins when they are in their early 20s or so. They are both on a European train when Hawke's character suddenly notices a beautiful woman sitting nearby. He thinks for a moment about how to approach this woman, and soon enough, we see them chatting and having fun together. They seem to like each other and out of nowhere, they decide to spend the day walking in the streets of Vienna together.

They both have somewhere to be the next day, and they don't have money to rent a room, so the only thing they can do is walk around, have fun together and get to know each other. All of that in only the few hours they have available before attending their other compromises in different countries.

The film follows them as they visit several places and it becomes clear they are quickly developing feelings for each other. Something important to notice about this story is that it wouldn't work in today's world with our current technology. A key part of this story is that they don't have a way to communicate with each other after they depart from the city. Nowadays, it would be easy to keep in touch no matter what. This key part of the story is what made the second film much more interesting.

In order to briefly write about the second and third film, I need to mention a spoiler about the ending of the first one and later on about the second one, so if you haven't seen the films and are interested in watching them, perhaps it would be better to stop reading the following paragraphs. Even though the spoilers can also be found reading the summary of the plot of each of the films I think it is fair to leave this notice.

In the second film, they are in their 30s. The guy is a successful writer and is on a tour in Europe promoting his new book, which is based on the magical day he had with a European girl many years ago. At the end of the first film, they promised each other to be at a particular place and time some months into the future. This is the only way they can keep in touch with each other, otherwise, they will probably never see each other ever again.

While the guy is talking about his book, suddenly, the girl appears and they see each other once again after many many years. Just like in the first film, they don't have much time available but they decide to spend some time together, talking and walking just like they did in the first film. They are now more mature of course, being 10 years older or so. They talk about their lives and about everything you can think of. The spark between them is still alive even after so many years since their first and only encounter. By the end of this film, it becomes clear what the future between them will be. There are now no excuses about being unable to keep in touch or anything like that, they now can do whatever they decide together.

The third film is 10 years or so into the future once again. They are now in their 40s, married to each other, and with a couple of twin girls. This film explores the frustration that many couples go through while in the middle of their lives. Of the 3, this is the film that felt the least "magical". They obviously still love each other but there are also several discussions between them, and they aren't as happy as they should be. It has an ambiguous ending, just like the 2 previous films.

All in all, this is a great romantic trilogy with a story that covers 3 different decades in the life of the main characters. This is a pure romantic trilogy and fans of the genre should definitely check it out.

Por último, tenemos esta gran trilogía romántica, la trilogía Before. Esta es probablemente la historia romántica más tradicional de las que menciono en esta publicación. Las 3 películas están dirigidas por Richard Linklater y los 2 personajes principales son interpretados por Ethan Hawke y Julie Delpy.

La trilogía comienza cuando tienen poco más de 20 años. Ambos están en un tren europeo cuando el personaje actuado por Hawke nota de repente a una hermosa mujer sentada cerca. Piensa por un momento en cómo acercarse a esta mujer, y pronto, los vemos charlando y divirtiéndose juntos. Parece que se gustan y, de la nada, deciden pasar el día caminando juntos por las calles de Viena.

Ambos tienen un lugar para estar al día siguiente y no tienen dinero para alquilar una habitación, así que lo único que pueden hacer es caminar, divertirse juntos y conocerse. Todo eso en las pocas horas que tienen disponibles antes de asistir a sus otros compromisos en diferentes países.

La película los sigue mientras visitan varios lugares y queda claro que rápidamente están desarrollando sentimientos el uno por el otro. Algo importante a tener en cuenta sobre esta historia es que no funcionaría en el mundo actual con nuestra tecnología actual. Una parte clave de esta historia es que no tienen forma de comunicarse entre ellos después de separarse. Hoy en día, sería fácil mantenerse en contacto pase lo que pase. Esta parte clave de la historia es lo que hizo que la segunda película fuera mucho más interesante.

Para escribir brevemente sobre la segunda y tercera película, necesito mencionar un spoiler sobre el final de la primera y más adelante sobre la segunda, así que si no has visto las películas y estás interesado en verlas, tal vez sería mejor dejar de leer los siguientes párrafos. Aunque los spoilers también se pueden encontrar leyendo el resumen de la trama de cada una de las películas creo que es justo dejar este aviso.

En la segunda película, tienen 30 años. El chico es un escritor de éxito y está de gira por Europa promocionando su nuevo libro, que se basa en el día mágico que tuvo con una chica europea hace muchos años. Al final de la primera película, se prometieron mutuamente estar en un lugar y una hora determinados en unos meses en el futuro. Esta es la única forma en que pueden mantenerse en contacto, de lo contrario, probablemente nunca se volverán a ver.

Mientras el chico habla de su libro, de repente aparece la chica y se vuelven a ver después de muchos años. Al igual que en la primera película, no tienen mucho tiempo disponible pero deciden pasar un rato juntos, hablando y caminando como lo hicieron en la primera película. Ahora son más maduros, por supuesto, siendo unos 10 años mayores más o menos. Hablan de sus vidas y de todo lo que se les ocurra. La chispa entre ellos sigue viva incluso después de tantos años desde su primer y único encuentro. Al final de esta película, queda claro cuál será el futuro entre ellos. La tercera película es una vez más dentro de 10 años en el futuro. Ahora tienen 40 años, están casados y con un par de gemelas. Esta película explora la frustración por la que pasan muchas parejas mientras se encuentran en la mitad de sus vidas. De las 3, esta es la película que se sintió menos "mágica". Obviamente, todavía se aman, pero también hay varias discusiones entre ellos y no están tan felices como deberían estarlo. Tiene un final ambiguo, al igual que las 2 películas anteriores.

Con todo, esta es una gran trilogía romántica con una historia que cubre 3 décadas diferentes en la vida de los personajes principales. Esta es una trilogía puramente romántica y los fanáticos del género definitivamente deberían verla.
