I watched a couple of this series' episodes back in the weeks when it was released and I enjoyed them. But since I like to binge-watch my series, I decided to wait until much later instead of continuing to watch them 1 per week.
In the past, I have enjoyed a lot of DC Comics animated films and they are usually quite fun, and now with Marvel releasing a similar concept, the competition between these 2 companies should be more fierce than ever before. I have to say "What If" was as enjoyable as the best animated DC Comics films, it was the type of production Marvel didn't have but surely needed, and as I will explain in the next paragraphs, they did a wonderful job with it.
What was the series about?
This series is simply about exploring alternative stories that take place in different universes but involve the same characters we already know from the Marvel films. The use of a multiverse is an idea that easily multiplies the content this type of company can create, and Marvel is certainly taking full advantage of it.
There are 9 episodes in total, the majority of them focus on mostly 1 well-known character or villain, and in the last one, we will see an important mix of different characters. The stories explored will satisfy all tastes, and one thing that surprised me was how well it resembled the combined use of action and comedy that's typical of the live-action Marvel movies.
In the episode where Thor's alternative story is introduced, at first, it seemed very silly to me, but as the episode kept advancing, its comedy aspect was hilarious and I ended up loving it. It wasn't my favorite episode, but at least it wasn't bad. In fact, I don't think this series has bad episodes, the best ones obviously have superheroes with real superpowers, but that was expected in my case. Especially because the same happens with the live-action productions, the best ones aren't those with superheroes that lack superpowers, like the series of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but those where important superpowers are constantly present, like WandaVision and the Loki series. In "What If", the same happens, the best episodes always have cool superpowers all over the place.
Among all the 9 stories we will see all sorts of crazy events taking place, the first episode is about a different Captain America, or rather about Captain Britain although her official name is Captain Carter. In the original story, Peggy was the girlfriend of Captain America before he became a superhero. In this alternative story, due to some unexpected circumstances, she is the one that is turned into a superhero and ends up being as capable and powerful as the original captain.
Vi un par de episodios de esta serie en las semanas en que se lanzó y los disfruté. Pero como me gusta ver mis series en maratón, decidí esperar hasta mucho más tarde en lugar de seguir viéndola 1 episodio por semana.
En el pasado, he disfrutado de muchas películas animadas de DC Comics y generalmente son bastante divertidas, y ahora con Marvel lanzando un concepto similar, la competencia entre estas 2 compañías debería ser más feroz que nunca. Tengo que decir que "What If" fue tan divertido como los mejores films animados de DC Comics, era el tipo de producción que Marvel no tenía pero sin duda necesitaba, y como explicaré en los siguientes párrafos, hicieron un trabajo maravilloso.
¿De qué trataba la serie?
Esta serie trata simplemente de explorar historias alternativas que tienen lugar en diferentes universos pero que involucran a los mismos personajes que ya conocemos de las películas de Marvel. El uso de un multiverso es una idea que multiplica fácilmente el contenido que este tipo de empresas puede crear, y Marvel sin duda lo está aprovechando al máximo.
Son 9 episodios en total, la mayoría de ellos se centran principalmente en 1 personaje o villano conocido, y en el último, veremos una importante historia con diferentes personajes conocidos. Las historias exploradas satisfarán a todos los gustos, y una cosa que sorprendió fue lo bien que se parecía al uso combinado de acción y comedia que es típico de las películas de acción en vivo de Marvel.
En el episodio donde se presenta la historia alternativa de Thor, al principio me pareció muy tonto, pero a medida que avanzaba el episodio, su comedia era divertidísima y acabé amando a ese episodio. No fue mi episodio favorito, pero al menos no estuvo mal. De hecho, no pienso que esta serie tenga episodios malos, los mejores obviamente tienen superhéroes con superpoderes reales, pero eso era lo esperado en mi caso. Sobre todo porque ocurre lo mismo con las producciones live-action, las mejores no son aquellas con superhéroes que carecen de superpoderes, como la serie Falcon y el Soldado de Invierno, sino aquellas en las que están constantemente presentes importantes superpoderes, como WandaVision y la serie Loki. En "What If", sucede lo mismo, los mejores episodios siempre tienen superpoderes geniales por todas partes.
Entre las 9 historias, veremos todo tipo de eventos locos, el primer episodio trata sobre un Capitán América diferente, o más bien sobre el Capitán Gran Bretaña, aunque su nombre oficial es Capitán Carter. En la historia original, Peggy era la novia del Capitán América antes de que se convirtiera en superhéroe. En esta historia alternativa, debido a unas circunstancias inesperadas, ella es la que se convierte en superheroína, y acaba siendo tan capaz y poderosa como el capitán original.
One of the craziest episodes is about Doctor Strange, we all know this character has a lot of cool powers and his next live-action movie is one I am expecting for a long time. In this alternative story, instead of losing his hands in the accident, he loses something more precious that will send him down to a spiral of complete madness and obsession until he inevitably loses his way. The crazy things that happen in this episode will surely be enjoyable for those that like Doctor Strange's character.
There was also an episode with a zombie apocalypse that our heroes cannot stop, and much worse, some of them even become zombies. Imagine a superhero using superpowers to hunt for human brains, well, that's what happened in that episode. It kind of felt anticlimatic because zombies have nothing related to Marvel, but since zombie stories and productions have always been popular I guess the creators of this show thought "why not?" and added a zombie episode.
My favorite episodes were undoubtedly the last 2. In those episodes, we will see the beginning and end of the most challenging threat ever included in a Marvel production. I am talking about a villain more dangerous than Thanos in the live-action films, a villain that could easily cause havoc to the people that humbled Loki in his series. The threat is so powerful that the last episode is called "What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath?". I loved how the series ended with those episodes I really hope Marvel continues with a season 2 about different stories because this format is a total success and there is a lot of cool stories yet to be told.
Main names associated with the series
The director of the entire season was Bryan Andrews, he did a great job but surprisingly this was only the third time this person works as a director in his career. The previous 2 productions where he worked as a director are also animated series, Jackie Chan Adventures, and Men in Black: The Series. On the other hand, Andrews has a lot of experience working in the art department of countless productions, so that surely helps when directing animated stories.
Matthew Chauncey was the main writer of the series and the only one that worked in all 9 episodes. He doesn't have much experience working in the entertainment industry, and only has 1 previous job where he worked as a writer for a series called 3Below: Tales of Arcadia.
A.C. Bradley also worked as a writer in a total of 6 episodes, and he has a little bit more information than Chauncey since he has worked for a total of 5 different productions as a writer. They worked together in the aforementioned series 3Below, and Bradley has also worked in Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and he wrote 1 episode of the popular series Arrow.
Uno de los episodios más locos es sobre Doctor Strange, todos sabemos que este personaje tiene muchos poderes geniales y su próxima película de acción en vivo es una que estoy esperando desde hace mucho tiempo. En esta historia alternativa, en lugar de perder las manos en el accidente, pierde algo más precioso que lo enviará a una espiral de completa locura y obsesión hasta que, inevitablemente, pierde el rumbo. Las locuras que suceden en este episodio seguramente serán disfrutables para aquellos a los que les gusta el personaje de Doctor Strange.
También hubo un episodio con un apocalipsis zombi que nuestros héroes no pueden detener, y mucho peor, algunos de ellos incluso se convierten en zombis. Imagina a un superhéroe usando superpoderes para buscar cerebros humanos, bueno, eso es lo que sucedió en ese episodio. Se sintió un poco anticlimático porque los zombies no tienen nada que ver con Marvel, pero dado que las historias y producciones de zombies siempre han sido populares, supongo que los creadores de este programa pensaron "¿por qué no?" y agregaron un episodio de zombies.
Mis episodios favoritos fueron, sin duda, los dos últimos. En esos episodios veremos el principio y el final de la amenaza más desafiante jamás incluida en una producción de Marvel. Estoy hablando de un villano más peligroso que Thanos en las películas de acción real, un villano que fácilmente podría causar estragos en las personas que humillaron a Loki en su serie. La amenaza es tan poderosa que el último episodio se llama "¿Y si ... el Observador rompe su juramento?". Me encantó cómo terminó la serie con esos episodios. Realmente espero que Marvel continúe con una temporada 2 sobre diferentes historias porque este formato es un éxito total y hay muchas historias geniales aún por contar.

How was the quality of the animation and the writing of the stories?
The animation was amazing and I would say it was better than the average DC Comics animated film. The episodes all have the same style of animation, unlike other anthology animated productions like the recent Star Wars: Visions or Love, Death, and Robots where the animation style used can vary from episode to episode. In "What If" there is a good reason for the animation style to be the same and it is that it makes the episodes and characters compatible with each other.
The writing was amazing and every single episode provided a fun and entertaining story that's worth watching. That's probably the hardest feat this series accomplished, to provide a long list of episodes where every single one is good. The stories aren't always simple, they can be exciting and very challenging to develop, especially the events of the last 2 episodes where we can see the most powerful threat ever explored on any Marvel production, and that's saying a lot.
Final thoughts
"What If" is a nice addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this format will finally allow them an efficient way to explore all the cool stories that aren't produced on live-action films.
The director, the writers, and some of the voice actors did a terrific job and the final result was one of the best animated productions I have seen in recent months. There was even a super fun comedic episode with Thor that had the same type of humor a lot of people love from the Marvel films.
I consider this series a must-watch for any Marvel fans, but it will probably be enjoyable for people who aren't necessarily fans of superheroes but simply enjoy watching some of their stories. "What If" is a serious series, and I need to mention this because while watching Star Wars: Visions, which is the same concept but applied to Star Wars, I was very disappointed in the tone of that series because it felt like it was mostly a non-serious show for young children. "What If" isn't like that in the least, it is a serious production as it should be.

La animación fue increíble y yo diría que fue mejor que la película animada promedio de DC Comics. Reflexiones finales
"What If" es una buena adición al Marvel Cinematic Universe, y este formato finalmente les permitirá una manera eficiente de explorar todas las historias geniales que no se producen en películas de acción en vivo.
El director, los guionistas y algunos de los actores de doblaje hicieron un trabajo estupendo y el resultado final fue una de las mejores producciones animadas que he visto en los últimos meses. Incluso tenemos el episodio cómico súper divertido con Thor que les comenté antes y que tenía el mismo tipo de humor que a mucha gente le encanta de las películas de Marvel.
Considero que esta serie es una must-watch para cualquier fanático de Marvel, pero probablemente también será disfrutable para las personas que no son necesariamente fanáticas de los superhéroes, sino que simplemente disfrutan viendo algunas de sus historias. "What If" es una serie seria, y debo mencionar esto porque mientras veía Star Wars: Visions, que es el mismo concepto pero aplicado a Star Wars, me decepcionó mucho el tono de esa serie porque sentí que era sobre todo un show poco serio para niños pequeños. "What If" no es así en lo más mínimo, es una producción seria como debería ser.
