There is an American film called The Awakening and I used to confuse the plot between those 2 films when trying to remember their differences. I might give that film a rewatch as well when I find myself again in the mood to watch this type of story.
Main names associated with the film
This film has a lot of talent involved in it, not only the main actress is extremely talented and has played the main role in other good films but the producer is also very popular with a very extensive list of previous works.
Belen Rueda plays the main role. Her character was an adopted kid and is now an adoptive mother living in what used to be the orphanage where she used to live when she was a kid. She, her husband, and their adopted kid, moved there with the hopes of reopening the business and use it as a facility for kids with special needs.
This actress is great for suspense films, she also played the main role in another awesome movie called The Body, which has a lot of surprising twists and a very intense and suspenseful plot. In fact, I discovered this actress while watching that movie. Another good film where she has worked as an actress is Julia's Eyes.
Her husband is played y Fernando Cayo. Despite the fact the husband should also be an important part of the plot given the type of events that take place, his presence becomes secondary and he is never as involved in the story as his wife. His character is less intense than his wife and doesn’t really believe her when he begins to hear some of her explanations regarding what’s happening to them in that particular place. Some of the other productions with this actor are the series Money Heist, he plays a minor role in the film The Skin I Live In, and in the recent film Sky High.
The kid was played by Roger Príncep and this is the most important production with him so far. He has worked in a lot of shorts and series in recent years, such as Habitaciones cerradas and Through a Boy's Eyes. The most recent production where he has worked is from 2019 called The Dark Village but despite its intriguing name, it was a very small production.
The medium was played by Geraldine Chaplin and she made an excellent work in her role. She tends to play secondary roles and some of the best-known productions where she has worked are one episode of Electric Dreams called Impossible Planet, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Crown, and A Monster Calls.
Guillermo del Toro is a name that most people who tend to watch movies have heard of at least once. He is one of the most renowned people when it comes to the genres of suspense and dark fantasy, and every time he participated in a new film it is almost a guarantee the film is going to be of high quality. This time he worked as a producer. Some of his previous works as a producer are Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Pacific Rim: Uprising, The Shape of Water, and Crimson Peak.

What was the movie about?
The movie is about a marriage moving to a big old house, but mainly, it is about the wife and to a lesser degree about the kid. As mentioned a few paragraphs above, the wife was an adopted kid who before getting adopted lived in this house when it was an orphanage, and this was an experience she enjoyed very much. She was friends with other kids that were waiting to be adopted and nothing bad happened to her while she lived there. That is why she returned now as an adult with her own family with the goal of reopening the business but this time as a house for kids with special needs.
Their adoptive kid has no siblings so far, so he spends a lot of time alone playing by himself, and when he starts talking about imaginary friends one might think this is just the result of his loneliness and that this will get solved as soon as other kids move to this orphanage and start playing with him. I have never known of a real-life case where a kid really has imaginary friends, I understand this can be considered common because it is constantly being portrayed in films but I believe it could also be the first early signs of major psychological problems.
This is an old house so I guess it is normal for it to have some noises caused by the old structures of the construction and their corresponding wear. If the kid suddenly talking about having some imaginary friends wasn’t worrisome enough, one night the mother hears some strange noises and finds a puzzling visit when patrolling the property around the house. This was the first scene that lets the viewer know there is something abnormal happening in this place. The paranormal events will take place sometime later.
The plot begins to get intense just when they are having their opening party and welcoming the new kids that will be living in this house. This event will trigger something major that will change the lives of the entire family.
The story isn’t only suspenseful but it also has a lot of drama as well. There will be some complementary characters such as a medium, the police, and a psychologist, but everything will revolve around the mother. She is the only one that can figure out what happened in the past and what’s happening in the present.
The film doesn’t really have scary scenes, it is just a big mystery involving ghosts with the drama related to past events and how it is affecting the present. In fact, rather than a suspense-horror, I would consider this story more like a suspense drama. There are several tragic events that the viewer will slowly discover, and eventually, everyone will understand the big mystery of this place.
There was one thing I didn’t like about the film, and it is related to what appears to be a huge dose of bad luck affecting the main character. There are 2 things that happen to her during intense moments that I just couldn’t believe because these were so unlikely to happen and these aren’t really entirely related to the plot so I had the impression of excessive and unnecessary bad luck in some moments.

Nunca supe de un caso de la vida real en el que un niño realmente tenga amigos imaginarios, entiendo que esto puede considerarse común porque está siendo retratado constantemente en las películas, pero creo que también podrían ser los primeros signos tempranos de problemas psicológicos importantes.

La película realmente no tiene escenas de miedo, es solo un gran misterio que involucra fantasmas con el drama relacionado con eventos pasados y cómo está afectando el presente. De hecho, en lugar de un suspenso-terror, consideraría esta historia más como un suspenso-drama. Hay varios eventos trágicos que el espectador irá descubriendo poco a poco, y eventualmente todos comprenderán el gran misterio de este lugar.
Hubo una cosa que no me gustó de la película, y está relacionada con lo que parece ser una gran dosis de mala suerte que afecta al personaje principal. Hay 2 cosas que le suceden durante momentos intensos que simplemente no podía creer porque era muy poco probable que sucedieran y no están realmente relacionadas con la trama, así que tuve la impresión de que hubo una mala suerte excesiva e innecesaria en algunos momentos.
How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?
Belen Rueda’s performance was absolutely great. She carries the weight of the whole drama of the situation and makes it very clear to the viewer her character is going through intense and maybe even traumatic circumstances. It was required of her to show a lot of emotions in some scenes and she does it wonderfully.
The performance from Fernando Cayo, the actor who plays the husband and the adoptive father of the kid, was just regular. He didn’t add anything interesting and I feel this is a role that could have been played by any actor and the result would have been the same. This role felt very generic and I believe it should have been given more importance somehow.
The settings were lovely for me. I love stories that belong to the mystery, suspense, or horror genres to take place in a good old house with a lot of history. The house is kind of isolated, with no close neighbors or anything like that which makes it ideal for some nice suspenseful moments. The property is also big enough to be able to easily host important secrets and both the interior and exterior are fancy and nice to look at.
The camera work was also great. The way the film shows the viewer the presence of something paranormal in the area is very enjoyable, there is one particular scene that takes place on a beach with a nearby cave and I just loved how we could glimpse at something that just shouldn’t be there. The same happens inside the house although I expected some jump scares that never materialized, which is why I consider this film one mainly belonging to the suspense genre, not to the horror genre.
In the scenes that take place inside the house, there are some cool moments and good twists that made use of interesting camera angles. The film is clearly a high-quality production all around.
Final thoughts
This was a very enjoyable film to watch. I was honestly expecting more horror than what it provided but that was all right. The mystery in this place is really tragic and I enjoyed how it was slowly discovered until we reach the major revealing of what really took place in the past.
The ending reminded me of the horror masterpiece The Haunting of Hill House because it focused more on the drama and it even had some touching elements too. However, unlike that series which had excellent horror in the first episodes, The Orphanage is just a bit of suspense and some drama, nothing more. I don’t think most viewers will get scared watching this film since there are literally no scary scenes whatsoever, only a few intense ones.
This is an excellent production and certainly worth watching, especially for those looking for a nice suspenseful story with a huge tragic mystery hidden in a big old house that is longing to be discovered.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la ambientación y el trabajo de cámara?
La actuación de Belen Rueda fue absolutamente genial. Ella lleva el peso de todo el drama de la situación y deja muy claro al espectador que su personaje está atravesando circunstancias intensas y tal vez incluso traumáticas. Se le pidió que mostrara muchas emociones en algunas escenas y lo hace de maravilla.
La actuación de Fernando Cayo, el actor que interpreta al esposo y padre adoptivo del niño, fue simplemente regular. No agregó nada interesante y creo que este es un papel que podría haber sido interpretado por cualquier actor y el resultado hubiera sido el mismo. Este rol se sintió muy genérico y creo que se le debería haber dado más importancia de alguna manera.
Los escenarios fueron encantadores para mí. Me encantan las historias que pertenecen a los géneros de misterio, suspenso o terror que se desarrollan en una buena casa antigua con mucha historia. La casa está un poco aislada, sin vecinos cercanos ni nada por el estilo, lo que la hace ideal para momentos agradables de suspenso. La propiedad también es lo suficientemente grande como para poder albergar secretos importantes y tanto el interior como el exterior son elegantes y agradables a la vista.
El trabajo de la cámara también fue genial. La forma en que la película muestra al espectador la presencia de algo paranormal en el área es muy buena, hay una escena en particular que tiene lugar en una playa con una cueva cercana y me encantó cómo pudimos vislumbrar algo que simplemente no debería estar allí. Lo mismo ocurre dentro de la casa aunque esperaba algunos sobresaltos que nunca se materializaron, por eso considero que esta película pertenece principalmente al género de suspenso, no al género de terror.
En las escenas que tienen lugar dentro de la casa, hay algunas momentos geniales y buenos giros que hicieron uso de ángulos de cámara interesantes. La película es claramente una producción de alta calidad en todos los aspectos.
Reflexiones finales
Esta fue una película muy agradable de ver. Honestamente, esperaba más horror del que proporcionaba, pero estuvo bien. El misterio en este lugar es realmente trágico y disfruté de cómo se fue descubriendo lentamente hasta que llegamos a la mayor revelación de lo que realmente sucedió en el pasado.
El final me recordó a la obra maestra de terror The Haunting of Hill House, porque se centró más en el drama e incluso tenía algunos elementos conmovedores. Sin embargo, a diferencia de esa serie que tuvo un excelente horror en los primeros episodios, The Orphanage es solo un poco de suspenso y algo de drama, nada más. No creo que la mayoría de los espectadores se asusten al ver esta película, ya que literalmente no hay escenas de miedo, solo algunas intensas.
Esta es una excelente producción y ciertamente vale la pena verla, especialmente para aquellos que buscan una buena historia de suspenso con un gran misterio trágico escondido en una gran casa antigua que anhela ser descubierto.
