I have never seen a Polish production before, or at least not that I remember and that was one of the reasons why I was intrigued to watch this series. The other reason was simply that it looked like it had cool dark mysteries to resolve and I have always loved stories with entertaining mysteries.
However, after watching season 2, which I think will be the last one because I don't think the show can continue, I have to say The Mire didn't meet my expectations. I was expecting a much more alluring series with a plot capable of making the viewer feel really involved and interested in it but in short words, the series is extremely slow and it doesn't offer a good pace to keep us really interested in what's happening.
Main names associated with the series
The main director of the entire 2 seasons is Jan Holoubek. His main experience in the film industry is as a cinematographer but he has directed several Polish productions in the past few years including a couple of Polish documentaries called "Pocztówki z republiki absurdu" and "Slonce i cien". All of his previous productions have been for the local Polish market and The Mire is the first one that was capable of achieving some international audience.
The main writers of the show have worked in both seasons. One of them is Kasper Bajon, who previously worked in a film called Via Carpatia and has 2 films that will be released sometime in the future called Open Your Eyes and Great Water. The other main writer is the same director mentioned before, Jan Holoubek. He usually is the writer of the productions he directs, so apart from writing the 2 documentaries, he also a miniseries and movie with the same name "25 lat niewinnosci. Sprawa Tomka Komendy" and another movie called "1800 gramów".
The main actor in the show is Dawid Ogrodnik. He plays a very dedicated journalist with good principles and is capable of putting in a lot of effort to get good stories for the readers. He has a wife and in season 2 he has also a teenage daughter, so he needs to split his time between his work and his family. His desire to really dig deep to research good stories can put him in dangerous situations. Some of the previous productions where this actor has worked are Oleg, Dark, Almost Night, and The Day of Chocolate.
His wife is played by Zofia Wichlacz. This character wasn't really important in season 1 but now in season 2, she will be a key character in the investigation of one of the crimes. She will be much more involved mainly because she isn't pregnant anymore like in season 1, and she can now go out and interact with other important characters with no issues whatsoever. This actress has been working in a lot of series in recent years, such as "Pisarze. Serial na krótko", World on Fire, The Teacher, among a few others.
Season 2 has a couple of new main characters that will be of huge importance in driving the story forward and solving the crimes. These characters are both police detectives, one of them is played by Magdalena Rózczka who has previously worked in the series Professional Secrecy, in "Miasto skarbów", "Lekarze" and several other productions. She is very experienced as an actress but virtually all of her previous jobs have been for the local Polish market only. In The Mire, she plays a detective from out of town, who is only there for a month to help the local police unify their methods. Since she isn't from that town, she is unaware of how corrupt and dirty it can be.
Nunca antes había visto una producción polaca, o al menos no que yo recuerde y esa fue una de las razones por las que me intrigó ver esta serie. La otra razón era simplemente que parecía que tenía misterios oscuros y geniales que resolver y siempre me han encantado las historias con misterios entretenidos.
Sin embargo, después de ver la temporada 2, que creo que será la última porque no creo que la serie pueda continuar, debo decir que The Mire no cumplió con mis expectativas. Esperaba una serie mucho más atractiva con una trama capaz de hacer que el espectador se sintiera realmente involucrado e interesado en ella, pero en pocas palabras, la serie es extremadamente lenta y no ofrece un buen ritmo para mantenernos realmente interesados en lo que está sucediendo. .

What was the series about?
Season 2 takes place around 15 years later than the first season and has a completely new plot, in fact, it was almost completely independent from season 1 if it wasn't for some small events that link the 2 stories.
This time, we have the main character back in town working in the same newspaper but now he has a senior role there. His wife isn't happy returning to this place and their relationship doesn't have the same chemistry as before. Maybe they are going through what is known as a midlife crisis.
This town has recently suffered a massive flood that caused havoc in the city and shortly after a boy is found dead in the forest. This is the first of the 2 mysteries seasons 2 provides to the viewer. Who killed the kid and why are questions that many people ask but are extremely difficult to answer. Plus, knowing the ways of this town, figuring out the truth will be much more challenging than in normal places.
The flood also reveals a massive graveyard hidden in the forest from the victims of all the abuses committed during WW2. At the ending of season 1, the show implied there was a supernatural element in the forest and I thought this was going to be a very big deal for the series but this wasn't the case. This apparently supernatural element makes no appearance in season 2, and I guess it was just there as a gimmick for season 1. I don't like the fact this series pretends to be something it isn't. Both the poster and the ending of season 1 implied something ghostly is happening but the truth is, the plot is only about crimes committed by bad people and nothing more.
Apart from the dead boy found, the other crime is about a young man who is the son of a very wealthy man and was kidnapped. His dad is desperate to rescue him but there has been no news and he has begun to suspect his son was murdered by the kidnappers. Both crimes are going to be investigated by the 2 police detectives mentioned a few paragraphs above, and also by the main character the journalist. The problem is this town has corruption and evilness all over the place and dangerous things can happen to those who are too curious about the dark events happening in this place. This isn't a happy town, far from it.
The police detective who is only in the town for a month will immediately suspect something weird is going on with the death of the young boy. She takes this investigation very seriously even though her boss in the police insists the case is closed. She has a good instinct and can realize when something seems off. Pretty much the entire plot is driven by this character, she is the one that will put in the work, and dig all the dirty stuff this town has to hide, especially those related to the boy's death.
The wife of the journalist, Teresa, will now be a more important character this season because she now happens to work in the school the young boy attended and she will find important evidence about what happened to him that will be of big help in solving this tragedy.

La temporada 2 tiene lugar unos 15 años después de la primera temporada y tiene una trama completamente nueva, de hecho, era casi completamente independiente de la temporada 1 si no fuera por algunos pequeños eventos que vinculan las 2 historias.
Esta vez, tenemos al personaje principal de regreso en la ciudad trabajando en el mismo periódico, pero ahora tiene una promoción a un mejor puesto. Su esposa no está feliz de regresar a este lugar y su relación no tiene la misma química que antes. Quizás estén atravesando lo que se conoce como una crisis de la mediana edad.
Este pueblo ha sufrido recientemente una inundación masiva que causó estragos en la ciudad y poco después un niño es encontrado muerto en el bosque. Este es el primero de los 2 misterios que la temporada 2 ofrece al espectador. Quién mató al niño y por qué son preguntas que muchas personas hacen pero que son extremadamente difíciles de responder. Además, conociendo la idiosincracia de esta ciudad, descubrir la verdad será mucho más desafiante que en lugares normales.
La inundación también revela un cementerio masivo escondido en el bosque de las víctimas de todos los abusos cometidos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Al final de la temporada 1, el show implicaba que había un elemento sobrenatural en el bosque y pensé que esto iba a ser un gran tema para la serie, pero este no fue el caso. Este elemento aparentemente sobrenatural no aparece en la temporada 2, y supongo que solo estaba allí como un truquito para la temporada 1. No me gusta el hecho de que esta serie pretenda ser algo que no es. Tanto el póster como el final de la temporada dan a entender que algo fantasmal está sucediendo, pero la verdad es que la trama solo trata sobre crímenes cometidos por personas malas y nada más.
Aparte del niño muerto encontrado, el otro crimen es sobre un joven que es hijo de un hombre muy rico y fue secuestrado. Su papá está desesperado por rescatarlo pero no ha habido noticias y ha comenzado a sospechar que su hijo fue asesinado por los secuestradores. Ambos delitos serán investigados por los 2 detectives de la policía mencionados unos párrafos más arriba, y también por el personaje principal, el periodista. El problema es que esta ciudad tiene corrupción y maldad por todas partes y pueden suceder cosas peligrosas a aquellos que sienten demasiada curiosidad por los oscuros eventos que suceden en este lugar. Esta no es una ciudad feliz, ni nada parecido.
El detective de policía, que solo está en la ciudad durante un mes, sospechará de inmediato que algo extraño está sucediendo con la muerte del niño. Se toma esta investigación muy en serio a pesar de que su jefe en la policía insiste en que el caso está cerrado. Tiene un buen instinto y puede darse cuenta cuando algo parece estar mal. Casi toda la trama está impulsada por este personaje, ella es la que pondrá el trabajo e investigará todas las cosas sucias que esta ciudad tiene que esconder, especialmente las relacionadas con la muerte del niño.
La esposa del periodista, Teresa, ahora será un personaje más importante esta temporada porque ahora pasa a trabajar en la escuela a la que asistió el joven y encontrará evidencia importante sobre lo que le sucedió que será de gran ayuda para resolver esta tragedia.
The plot is a bit messy but it provided some good twists that viewers won't see coming. Since it is a small town, almost everyone has some type of interaction with each other and this allows for a lot of suspicions to arise when trying to figure out who's responsible for the crimes.
The town is full of secrets and everyone seems to be scared to tell them and expose them. That's why the only person getting the job done is an out-of-town police detective who only cares about doing her job right and then getting back to her hometown.
I enjoyed this season a bit more than the first one, I think the story and the twists were better but it still doesn't meet the expectations I have of it. The series was extremely slow, especially in the first half of the season, and the 2 final episodes were the only ones I can describe as really entertaining and with a nice pace, at least that was the case for me because I was really interested in knowing who were the people behind the 2 crimes.
How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?
I liked the performance of the main character, he was able to show enough emotionality in certain scenes, and his character was very convincing for the most part. One of the police detectives, the one from out of town, seemed like a robot for the most part. She doesn't show much emotionality and remains with a neutral experience throughout the entire series, in her case, I believe the performance could have been better.
The scenery was but not as good as season 1. While investigating the crimes, the only places they visit are other houses or buildings so what we see for the most part is regular Polish architecture from the Soviet era, which means the buildings weren't really inspiring.
Final thoughts
The Mire is a series that appears to be extremely intriguing and even with paranormal elements but it is actually a very slow series where the plot is only about crimes committed by crooked members of the community that have enough power to silence and stop almost anyone willing to uncover the truth. I liked the twists at the end of season 2, but the extremely slow pace of the entire series makes it hard to recommend. I have seen many other productions from the same genre that are much better and I don't think this one is a must-watch or anything similar.

La trama es un poco desordenada, pero proporcionó algunos buenos giros que los espectadores no verán venir. Como es un pueblo pequeño, casi todo el mundo tiene algún tipo de interacción entre ellos y esto permite que surjan muchas sospechas al tratar de averiguar quién es el responsable de los crímenes.
La ciudad está llena de secretos y todos parecen tener miedo de contarlos y exponerlos. Es por eso que la única persona que hace el trabajo es un detective de policía de fuera de la ciudad que solo se preocupa por hacer bien su trabajo y luego regresar a su ciudad natal.
Disfruté esta temporada un poco más que la primera, creo que la historia y los giros fueron mejores pero aún así cumplió con las expectativas que tenía. La serie fue extremadamente lenta, especialmente en la primera mitad de la temporada, y los 2 episodios finales fueron los únicos que puedo describir como realmente entretenidos y con un buen ritmo, al menos ese fue el caso para mí porque estaba realmente interesado en saber quiénes eran las personas detrás de los 2 crímenes.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco y el escenario?
Me gustó la actuación del personaje principal, pudo mostrar suficiente emotividad en ciertas escenas y su personaje fue muy convincente en su mayor parte. Uno de los detectives de la policía, el de fuera de la ciudad, parecía un robot en su mayor parte. No muestra mucha emotividad y se mantiene con una experiencia neutra a lo largo de toda la serie, en su caso creo que la actuación podría haber sido mejor.
El paisaje no era tan bueno como en la temporada 1. Mientras investigaban los crímenes, los únicos lugares que visitan son otras casas o edificios, por lo que lo que vemos en su mayor parte es la arquitectura polaca regular de la era soviética, lo que significa que los edificios no eran realmente inspiradores.
Reflexiones finales
The Mire es una serie que parece ser extremadamente intrigante e incluso con elementos paranormales, pero en realidad es una serie muy lenta donde la trama solo trata sobre crímenes cometidos por miembros corruptos de la comunidad que tienen suficiente poder para silenciar y detener a casi cualquiera que esté dispuesto a descubrir la verdad. Me gustaron los giros al final de la temporada 2, pero el ritmo extremadamente lento de toda la serie hace que sea difícil de recomendar. He visto muchas otras producciones del mismo género que son mucho mejores y no creo que esta sea una must watch ni nada parecido.
