I usually am aware of the series I plan to watch before they are released, but unexpected surprises like this one are always appreciated. Another thing I wasn't expecting is that Squid Game appears to have beaten Alice In Borderland in popularity and social discussion, I loved the Japanese series and it was actually the best production I have watched within this subgenre where characters need to play some mortal games, however, after watching Squid Game I can say this series deserves all the praise it has received. I wouldn't say it is better than Alice in Borderland, but it is certainly just as good.
When it comes to Korean productions, Squid Game is among my favorites along with the Oscar-winning movie Parasite, and the horror film The Wailing. It is great to see such a small country beginning to produce high-quality films and series, and I am sure they will continue delivering more great content in the months and years to come.
What was the series about?
The series is about mortal games organized by a group of mysterious and wealthy people. They send scouts to the streets with the goal of finding people in need of money and with the readiness to participate in several games in order to win money. The series actually shows how the main character is scouted and convinced to participate in these games.
The organization for these games is incredible. The people in charge of it have everything planned to avoid getting discovered, which can make viewers think that extremely powerful people are involved in this.
All of the participants of the game are in urgent need of money, and that's why they will be risking their lives each time they play. All of this happens on a very remote island, and once the players get there they must continue to play unless the majority decide to leave, and if they leave, they obviously cannot win any money.
The incentive to convince these people to play the game is a huge prize in cash worth millions that hangs above their dormitory. They can see this cash every day and this acts as a constant incentive so they can continue to give their best in each game.
The games are the fun part of the series. They are simply common games played by Korean kids and these games are similar to those played by kids in other countries. The games have simple rules and they are easy to understand, the only problem is, that their lives are at risk, and if they lose they get killed. The cold-blooded killings are the brutal part of the show. No matter how hard they beg, nothing can prevent a losing player from getting killed.
Por lo general, estoy al tanto de la serie que planeo ver desde antes de su lanzamiento, pero siempre se agradecen las sorpresas inesperadas como esta. Otra cosa que no esperaba es que Squid Game parece haber superado a Alice In Borderland en popularidad y discusión social, me encantó la serie japonesa y en realidad fue la mejor producción que he visto dentro de este subgénero donde los personajes necesitan jugar algunos juegos mortales, sin embargo, después de ver Squid Game, puedo decir que esta serie merece todos los elogios que ha recibido. No diría que es mejor que Alice in Borderland, pero ciertamente es igual de buena.

As these characters play the mortal games, we will see alliances developing, betrayals, lies, fights, and several emotional moments where the characters are in deep suffering. The drama is almost as entertaining as the mortal games.
There is a couple of twists related to the winning players in some games, but ultimately, there wasn't a big surprise with the final players, although this is understandable for obvious reasons.
I loved the macabre version of these innocent childhood games, and I also loved the simultaneous psychological games the characters need to endure in order to survive these difficult circumstances. After watching it, I can say this series was very entertaining and enjoyable, a very pleasant surprise for me.
Main names associated with the series
The director and writer of the series is Dong-hyuk Hwang. He has worked several times in both roles but always in small productions such as Silenced, Miss Granny, and The Fortress. Squid Game is easily his biggest success.
Among the cast, we have the actor Jung-jae Lee playing the main character, who is a guy in his 40s divorced, full of debts and economic problems, and with important family drama in his life. This actor is extremely active in the Korean entertainment industry and is constantly working on new productions. Some examples of his previous works would be Deliver Us from Evil, New World, and The Face Reader.
Hae-soo Park will play another important character, who is, by the way, a friend of the main character. This character is portrayed as very smart and capable of achieving big success in his life. However, due to some personal mistakes, he will find himself participating in the Squid Game and fighting for his life. This actor began his career in 2015 and has had fair success so far. He has a big project coming up soon in a new series called Money Heist Korea, which is a remake of the popular Spanish series of the same name.

Finally, we have the actor Heo Sung-tae who will be playing a thug during the mortal games. That character works in organized crime, and he is used to bossing others around and be very violent every now and then. We can see this actor in other productions such as Beyond Evil, The Age of Shadows and The Silent Sea.
How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?
The performance from the cast was good for the most part. There were some characters that did a terrible acting job, one annoying woman who tries to befriend the thug, and later in the series, there will be some characters called VIPs, and their acting was also very awful. The main characters, on the other hand, did a fine job in their roles.
The scenery is very original thanks to the variety of the mortal games they will be playing. It was fun but also a bit disturbing seeing how innocent games get twisted into such depraved ones.
Final thoughts
Squid Game is an excellent series that most people will enjoy. If you like other productions such as Alice in Borderland, The Hunger Games, or The Platform, you will enjoy this one. Basically, if you like stories where the characters are put in several psychological games then you will love Squid Game.
Despite the violent nature of the games, there isn't intense gore or anything like that. The series tries to hide the gore and focus more on the stressful psychological games the characters need to play. It was a very fun series to watch, and I totally recommend it.

La actuación del elenco fue buena en su mayor parte. Hubo algunos personajes que hicieron un trabajo de actuación horrible, una mujer molesta que intenta hacerse amiga del matón, y más adelante en la serie, habrá algunos personajes llamados VIP, y su actuación también fue muy mala. Los personajes principales, por otro lado, hicieron un buen trabajo en sus roles.
El escenario es muy original gracias a la variedad de juegos de mortales que estarán jugando. Fue divertido pero también un poco perturbador ver cómo juegos inocentes se transforman en juegos tan depravados.

Squid Game es una excelente serie que la mayoría de la gente disfrutará. Si te gustan otras producciones como Alice in Borderland, The Hunger Games o The Platform, disfrutarás de esta. Básicamente, si te gustan las historias en las que los personajes se colocan en varios juegos psicológicos, entonces te encantará Squid Game.
A pesar de la naturaleza violenta de los juegos, no hay sangre intensa ni nada de eso. La serie intenta ocultar el gore y centrarse más en los estresantes juegos psicológicos que los personajes necesitan jugar. Fue una serie muy divertida de ver y la recomiendo totalmente.
