When I was much younger my favorite series were comedies such as Friends and Two and a Half Men. I use to watch their episodes every night and it didn't matter if the episode was an old one because I would still watch it. As time went on I began to watch them less and less. In the case of Two and a Half Men when Charlie Sheen left the show I was super disappointed and ultimately, I just stopped watching comedy series.

I don't even know when was the last time I saw a comedy series, it must have been something close to 10 years ago. I enjoy comedy like most people, the problem is that silliness is usually used to make things look funny and it doesn't always work.

What is the series all about?

Since I haven't watched much comedy lately, I was excited about this new series where an alien from outer space arrives on Earth and finds himself in a difficult situation in which he needs to pretend he is a normal human like everyone else. He is super clumsy but most people just think he is a weird guy and that's it.

The alien is here on an important mission of course, and this is when the dark comedy of the series makes its appearance. We constantly hear the alien's thoughts and the sinister way of its reasoning while at the same time, it presents itself looking like a dumb guy in his 40s or 50s who is the most socially awkward person in existence.

Most comedy scenes involve the alien clumsiness while pretending to be a normal human. However, I was honestly expecting it to be even funnier but I guess this was all right. Throughout the season I think most people will laugh at least a couple of times. The writers of the show did a good job elaborating situations to exploit the alien's clumsiness and it turned out to be cool.

This isn't a series to be taken seriously of course so there is no point in judging the way the alien looks like. The scenes with the spaceship look quite nice and are the only ones that clearly required CGI. When it comes to the cast, I think all the characters could have been played by regular actors, they did a normal job. The one that clearly shines is the main character, the alien played by Alan Tudyk.

Alan was simply perfect for the role. He portrays his alien character in a perfect way, his clumsiness and weirdness seem real, not acted or faked, and he also does a great job with his facial expressions while trying to appear normal. It must be challenging to play an alien who is pretending to be a normal human but his performance was awesome.

I hadn't seen much of this actor before this series but I can now say he is good at playing weird characters. The rest of the cast felt kind of generic for the most part so there is not much to say about their performances. The majority are just complementary roles so the weird alien can shine, however, these 2 secondary characters were of big importance:

Asta Twelvetrees played by Sara Tomko is the human that will end up developing a very strong friendship with the alien. She thinks of it as just a weird guy and they help each other in some of the issues they will be facing in their personal lives, especially in the case of Asta because the alien doesn't really have a personal life. She is the second most important character in the series and will be a key factor in the alien's final decision.

Max Hawthorne is played by Judah Prehn. This character is important because he is able to see the alien in his true form. You see, this alien has all sorts of abilities, and one of them is to modify its looks. That's why he looks like a normal guy instead of a gross alien. However, it is informed in the series that some people have a genetic mutation that allows them to see past this molecular makeup. This kid is one of them. He sees the ugly alien's look from the first moment and will become an important character as well. If there is a second season this kid will surely play a very important role. Also, a lot of comedy scenes involve the kid because he hates the alien and he doesn't trust it.

The creator of the show is Chris Sheridan, and this is the first time I saw something created by him. His main production so far has been Family Guy which I am sure most people have heard of. This guy certainly has a lot of talent creating funny content and if you like the genre, I will make sure to check on anything he is preparing for the near future.

Is it worth watching?

If you enjoy the comedy genre, this series is certainly worth watching. There are a lot of funny dialogues and situations throughout the entire season, not all of them are actually funny but a good amount of them are. The main character is something very unique and the type of comedic scenes are also unique as a result. I definitely recommend watching this series if its premise seems entertaining to you.
