This is a horror movie I have been wanting to watch since it was released some time ago, and recently I finally had the time to do it. Candyman is actually a sequel from a classic horror movie originally released in the early 90s.

I would mention a few basic information about the plot of the original film, but this sequel does a good job providing the necessary dialogues that allow any viewer to be aware of the important events in the original film and even a relationship between one character of the original that is also present in the sequel.

Before going into the film, I would like to say this is the type of horror film that isn't actually scary, and I honestly believe most people would say the same after watching it. Maybe this happens because it just recycles an idea from old horror productions, and those might not be that effective with modern audiences anymore. So don't think of this film as one that can make your bone chills.

What was the movie about?

Candyman takes place almost 3 decades after the events of the first film. Many people considered Candyman as some silly urban legend but a considerable amount of them have a good memory about the tragic events related to this paranormal being, and some of them are still a little afraid of saying his name 5 times in front of a mirror. However, having a bunch of people constantly repeating the Candyman word in front of a mirror became boring very fast.

The main character is Anthony, an artist living with his girlfriend, Brianna, who also works in the art industry as a gallery manager. Very quickly at the beginning of the movie, this couple is chatting with friends and we start to learn about events that took place in the first film thanks to Brianna's brother who does a good job sharing some basic information about that movie.

Given the fact Anthony is an artist, he needs a constant flow of creativity to succeed at his job, and he considers this creepy Candyman story has the potential to inspire some new artistic works that could be of huge help for him. This sparks his curiosity about this topic and he goes on to explore the Cabrini-Green housing project which is where the tragic events took place.

He becomes really interested in everything related to the Candyman and he ends up learning a lot about it, to the point of even becoming kind of obsessed about this paranormal legend. Bill Burke is an important character in all of this so I recommend paying attention to him every time he appears on the screen.

The involvement of Anthony with the Candyman legend goes much deeper than he originally expected, and as the movie advances, he will slowly discover things about his past that will certainly condition his immediate future.

The horror in this film wasn't impactful because these are just old ideas without adding anything new. The only new thing is that the creators decided to include some background for the Candyman origins using cultural issues that can be considered hot topics by today's standards in America. Basically, Candyman changes the nature of the Candyman character and turns it into a multigenerational representation of the suffering of black people as a result of different types of injustices and systematic wrongdoings against a few black men.

It is very common in movies and series to see paranormal events being the result of extreme emotional suffering from the past, that ends up leaving an unexplainable manifestation (ghosts for example) in the form of destructive energy looking to perpetuate the suffering or impose it in the original aggressors. However, I don't think the background of an important paranormal character has been changed in later productions in such a way as this film did with Candyman.

One example I can think of regarding extreme collective suffering leaving an unexplainable manifestation can be watched in one episode of the Netflix series called Unsolved Mysteries, which is actually a remake of a popular old series with the same name. This episode is called Tsunami Spirits and shares the experience of many Japanese people after a tsunami caused total destruction in their lives and how some of them began to see many ghosts in the coming days, weeks, and months. It was very intriguing and thought-provoking.

Back to the Candyman discussion, this was an interesting change and made the Candyman legend even more powerful and maybe even indestructible. Apart from this, the rest of the movie felt generic with no greatness or anything that was very memorable.

The killings were good ol' slasher kills, the scary situations were simply the Candyman using his hook to attack new victims while also being invisible on some occasions, and little more.

Main names associated with the film

The director of this film is Nia DaCosta, who hasn't had a big experience as a director so far, but her career is growing and her future as a director has a lot of potential. So far, she has only worked in 3 full-length productions, including Candyman. The other 2 were a film called Little Woods and she directed 2 episodes of the series Top Boy. She has a big project coming up next year called The Marvels, which will be the second part of the popular Captain Marvel movie. She also worked as a writer for Candyman's screenplay along with 2 other people.

Jordan Peele is one of the other writers, and he is easily the most popular person that worked in this film. Peele is a person who usually does a good job in any role he takes, he has worked as a writer, actor, and in the past few years, he did a great job as a director with the films Get Out and Us. Some examples of his previous works as a writer are the series The Twilight Zone and The Last O.G. as well as the 2 films I just mentioned.

Win Rosenfeld also worked as a writer for the screenplay of Candyman. This is the writer who is the least experienced of the 3, and I believe he is beginning his writing career as Peele's buddy because the only 2 productions where he has worked as a writer have been alongside Peele, Candyman, and 1 episode of The Twilight Zone series.

The cast only has 1 important member who is the actor playing the main role, Yahya Abdul-Mateen. He plays a character named Anthony and for those that watched the original film this name should be familiar. Yahya is an actor who has participated in very high-quality productions in recent years, some examples are The Trial of the Chicago 7, Us, the Watchmen series, one episode of Black Mirror called Striking Vipers, and he will be playing a young Morpheus in the incoming The Matrix Resurrections.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?

The performance from the cast was acceptable for the most part, but nothing really amazing. The main actor did a normal job playing his role, but I believe there was a little mistake in the writing of this character because it doesn't make sense for him to not go to a hospital after he suffers some ugly sting in his hand. Any person would certainly decide to go to the hospital after watching his health state once that sting happens. One potential explanation for this would be that he wasn't in a proper mental state for other major reasons.

The scenery was normal as well. Most of the scenes happen in a regular neighborhood, which is what most people will expect because the Candyman curse originated in a very small community. Finally, when it comes to the camera work, it was decent. Some of the scenes are filmed in such a way that they increase the scare factor, but overall, the film didn't feel very special and it was just an average production for the most part.

Final thoughts

Candyman is an acceptable sequel to the classic original film. It is my opinion that this type of horror doesn't work in modern audiences as it did decades ago, so nowadays it is hard to impress people with this type of productions. This doesn't mean it is a bad film, but it will simply be an easily forgettable production for most viewers.

The people who will enjoy this film the most are clearly those that loved the original Candyman, and those that like slasher films and a lot of killing and blood taking place on the screen. If you don't like those productions, then stay away from this film because it simply has nothing to offer you.

In my case, I just found it acceptable and I wouldn't have cared to skip this film after all, so it didn't fulfill my expectations because before watching it I was a bit excited about it. It doesn't really provide anything new or groundbreaking, and I don't think the Candyman franchise has anything more to give, I believe it has been completely depleted and it is time to keep exploring other horror plots.

If you watched this film let me know your opinion about it. Thanks for reading!
