La excavación nos relata una historia sobre hechos ocurridos a finales de los años 30 del siglo pasado en una región de Inglaterra. La película dirigida por Simon Stone logra una excelente ambientación que con sus tonos ocres, y una iluminación mate nos va envolviendo en una atmósfera que huele a pasado, un pasado rural, austero y una inquietud tenue y constante que a lo largo de la película se hace sentir, la entrada de Inglaterra a la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Basada en la novela de John Preston y en el hecho real del descubrimiento arqueológico que ha sido descrito como el más importante del siglo XX para la historia europea la película nos muestra como pudieron ocurrir los hechos.

Una viuda terrateniente, Edith Pretty, representada por Carey Mulligan tiene en sus tierras unos montículos que presume sean un cementerio y desea llevar a cabo una excavación para descubrir lo que hay en ellos, se pone en contacto con el museo arqueológico de su ciudad y no consigue el apoyo para llevar a cabo su proyecto debido a la inminente guerra los recursos existentes no se pueden disponer para esta búsqueda, sin embargo, le hablan de un arqueólogo con larga experiencia.

Edith contacta al arqueólogo Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes). Basil no es un arqueólogo académico pero si de hecho ya que desde muy niño esta ha sido su labor. Tras acordar las condiciones laborales Basil comienza la excavación. Edith, basada en su intuición, le propone iniciar por un montículo determinado, propuesta que Brow rechaza fundamentado en su experiencia, sin embargo, al poco tiempo se da cuenta que la intuición de Edith es válida, tiene sentido ya que por su ubicación central y el carácter religioso que le están dando sea este montículo la tumba de algún gran personaje.

A medida que avanza la exploración van encontrando restos de madera, hallazgo que llenan a Brow de suposiciones y expectativas, llega un momento en que presume que es un barco Vikingo, al encontrarse, relativamente, cerca del río la posibilidad es real. Brow comparte sus cavilaciones de una manera muy especial con Robert Pretty (Archie Barnes) el hijo único de Edith. Robert es un niño como de 10 años, despierto, con una imaginación y creatividad sobresaliente que encuentra en Brow un gran narrador de historias y juntos van imaginando los hechos.

Un buen día confirman que es, efectivamente, un barco lo que está enterrado. El museo local que ha estado pendiente de la excavación se pone en contacto con el Museo Nacional. Llegan al sitio el director de la institución, Charles W. Phillips, (Ken Stott) y un equipo de arqueólogos. Phillips busca desplazar a Brow descalificándolo por no ser arqueólogo titulado y queriéndose apropiar del descubrimiento.

Dentro del equipo se encuentra una joven pareja Peggy Piggott (Lily James) y Stuart Piggott (Ben Chaplin), que junto a Rory Lomax (Johnny Flynn), primo de Edith, y que documenta fotográficamente la excavación, le dan el toque de conflicto romántico a la historia.

Edith está enferma pero su fortaleza de carácter no decae, quiere llevar la excavación hasta el final, logra mantener a Brow en el proyecto y cuando finalmente hacen el gran hallazgo establece condiciones para hacer entrega al museo, entre estos: dar a conocer a los habitantes del pueblo el descubrimiento, donar el tesoro al museo nacional, que Brow reciba los méritos que tiene por el hallazgo y esconder el tesoro hasta que pase el conflicto Bélico.

También ha pensado en su hijo, confía en que su primo Rory se haga cargo de él y que el señor y la señora Brow ayuden en esta tarea. En una de las escenas finales, el niño, ayudado por Brow, le prepara un viaje imaginario a su madre, una escena conmovedora que indica el cercano fin de una historia de vida que resalta valores individuales y sociales de una época.

Comentario intencionado

Uno de los aspectos en que me enfoco cuando veo una película son las emociones que transmiten los personajes, quizás busco con insistencia profundizar en los sentimientos que se exponen, las motivaciones internas y aquellas fortalezas que tiene el personaje para superar la trama-conflicto que se plantea.

La excavación, en este sentido, la siento fría, quizás sea porque busca recoger en toda su magnitud ese talante inglés, que nos resulta conocido: personas muy comedidas, circunspectas a la hora de expresar sus emociones, en todo caso, la nota alegre y entusiasta la pone el niño, Robert, que con su mundo de fantasía e inocencia vive una realidad un poco descontextualizada del mundo de adultos en el que se desenvuelve.

Indudablemente, que siendo una historia basada en hechos reales, hay que reconocer que la vida de Edith Pretty no es como para lanzar cohetes, resaltando en ella lo que hoy en día calificamos como resiliencia, una mujer que se planteo una meta y, con muchos factores en contra, persistió hasta logarlo.

The excavation tells us a story about events that occurred in the late 30s of last century in a region of England. The film directed by Simon Stone achieves an excellent setting that with its ochre tones and matte lighting envelops us in an atmosphere that smells of the past, a rural, austere past and a tenuous and constant restlessness that throughout the film is felt, the entrance of England to the Second World War.

Based on the novel by John Preston and on the real fact of the archaeological discovery that has been described as the most important of the twentieth century for European history, the film shows us how the events could have occurred.

A widowed landowner, Edith Pretty, represented by Carey Mulligan has on her land some mounds that she presumes to be a cemetery and wishes to carry out an excavation to discover what is in them, she contacts the archaeological museum of her city and does not get the support to carry out her project due to the imminent war the existing resources are not available for this search, however, she is told of an archaeologist with long experience.

Edith contacts archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes). Basil is not an academic archaeologist, but a de facto archaeologist, as this has been his job since he was a child. After agreeing on working conditions Basil begins the excavation. Edith, based on her intuition, suggests starting with a specific mound, a proposal that Basil rejects based on his experience, however, soon after he realizes that Edith's intuition is valid, it makes sense because of its central location and the religious character that this mound is the tomb of a great personage.

As the exploration progresses they find remains of wood, a finding that fills Brow with assumptions and expectations, at one point he presumes that it is a Viking ship, as it is relatively close to the river the possibility is real. Brow shares his musings in a very special way with Robert Pretty (Archie Barnes), Edith's only son. Robert is a boy about 10 years old, awake, with an outstanding imagination and creativity that finds in Brow a great storyteller and together they imagine the facts.

One day they confirm that it is indeed a ship that is buried. The local museum that has been keeping an eye on the excavation contacts the National Museum. The institution's director, Charles W. Phillips, (Ken Stott) and a team of archaeologists arrive at the site. Phillips seeks to displace Brow by disqualifying him as a non-certified archaeologist and seeking to appropriate the discovery.

Within the team is a young couple Peggy Piggott (Lily James) and Stuart Piggott (Ben Chaplin), who along with Rory Lomax (Johnny Flynn), Edith's cousin, and who photographically documents the dig, add the touch of romantic conflict to the story.

Edith is ill but her strength of character does not falter, she wants to carry the excavation to the end, she manages to keep Brow in the project and when they finally make the great find she establishes conditions to make delivery to the museum, among these: to make known to the inhabitants of the town the discovery, to donate the treasure to the national museum, that Brow receives the merits that he has for the finding and to hide the treasure until the War conflict passes.

He has also thought of his son, trusts that his cousin Rory will take care of him and that Mr. and Mrs. Brow will help in this task. In one of the final scenes, the boy, helped by Brow, prepares an imaginary trip for his mother, a touching scene that indicates the near end of a life story that highlights individual and social values of an era.

Intentional commentary

One of the aspects I focus on when watching a film are the emotions conveyed by the characters, perhaps I insistently seek to delve into the feelings that are exposed, the internal motivations and those strengths that the character has to overcome the plot-conflict that arises.

The excavation, in this sense, I feel it cold, perhaps because it seeks to collect in all its magnitude that English mood, which is known to us: very restrained people, circumspect when expressing their emotions, in any case, the cheerful and enthusiastic note is put by the child, Robert, who with his world of fantasy and innocence lives a reality a little decontextualized from the world of adults in which he develops.

Undoubtedly, being a story based on real events, it must be recognized that Edith Pretty's life is not one to launch rockets, highlighting in her what today we qualify as resilience, a woman who set a goal and, with many factors against her, persisted until she achieved it.
