Introduction
Imagine a series of events in modern day america,
they is a terrorist Plot that wipes out the government within all branches
They is a fall in Fertility rate and births worldwide resulting in a decrease in populations
And all the while women rights are being slowly removed from US society
It can't be that bad it gonna get better right
It does and it will when the sons of Jacob remake the USA into Gilead, A Dictator republic where only men can hold normal
Jobs, hold estate and property as women need permission to have cash to pay for groceries
Where women are to cook, clean and manage the housely duties of the olden times
And a worse fate are those of the Handmaidens
Plot summary
spoilers are in this but i will try and keep it as minimal as possible
The Hero in our story starts with her coming to her new home, the second deployment as a handmaiden and has become named
offred, This title is very much and indication of who she is serving under, The household of the Waterford,
Commander Fred Waterford who Is the head of the household, Mrs Waterford the wife of Fred, there is also Rita blue the Martha of the house ( marthas are general caretakers, cooks,
Cleaners, generally too old to give birth) and commander Fred driver Nick.
Now the propose of a handmaiden is to serve as a fertile woman for the commander to have children with, Every 28 days
when the handmaiden is most fertility the ritual begins where the handmaiden lies on the commanders bed, with the wife
holding her arms down and the commander impregnating her, The ritual itself is very lack of passion and just of the act
itself (the gildead sanctioned rapes).
When the handmaidens are not part of the ritual they are general helpers around the house and in charge of grocery
shopping and are assigned shopping partners from other houses.
All the handmaidens are managed by the matrons or Aunts (aunt Lydia is the head of the current area) Now these are usually
older ladies in a great deal of power and exercise certain rights that most women in Gilead have such as command over
guardians (Gilead Military) to be able to read and also freedom to move about and command authority and respect even among
Commanders.
Throughout the series you have multiple flashbacks regarding the handmaidens training in the red center,How the US
fell to Gilead and the sons of Jacob, How the changes to women losing they rights and freedoms happen over a process rather then sudden
How some people escaped and others were not so lucky, also how the handmaidens play a key part in the justice process
for some that are sentenced to death (which in my view is a lot considering how they are worried humanity is dying off)
With the season and the list of events that lead to a critical and small uprising of handmaidens in the simple ways, you
get a documentary about the life of a handmaiden, what they go thorough, how they are able to cope with the constant
torture and sometimes how they are met with both cruelty and kindness thorough proxy of they actions and by actions not
relating to themselves.
How it hit hard
As a person who truly believes that if your lifestyle or choices harm no one or by proxy cause harm to someone else
that you should be able to live your best life as possible this one got to me by reminding me how quickly a civil
society can degenerate to something worse then the Nazis under the idea of a loving god. Some scenes are executed so
brilliantly that i couldn't help but look away you cry out in joy as someone got a well earned justice as karma
works in they benefit.
but it was more just the way evil was made to grow and endure as many of the heroes were silent you doing things for actions
happening too late and with little effect.
But it was the little victories or the little ways that some people beat the system and the idea that hope can sustain
us all no matter what happens and no matter what goes wrong.
Concussion
It is a gripping tale and a brilliantly actors performing at the top of they game, the way it begins is the way it ends
in hope for the better day.
There will be times you want to turn it off and be disgusted, i did and all i can say is endure and it will get better
and it will hook you as it a great series, I will be back with you soon
