The Academy Awards ceremony is an important event for all of us who love cinema. This year it will take place next Sunday and that's why I wanted to tell you a little about the nominated for this edition. The Screenplays | Los guiones
Of the eight categories that I haven't talked about, which are the main ones of the night, I will start with the scripts. The award for Best adapted screenplay is awarded to writers and / or screenwriters who write a script based on their own or other people's material, but always from another medium. This year we have adaptations of two plays, a novel, a non-fiction book, and a political event. Without detracting from the work of the other competitors, my favorites are The father by Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller, adapted from a play by Zeller himself, and Nomadland by Chloé Zhao, adapted from the book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century written by Jessica Bruder.
As for Best Original Screenplay, it strikes me as a tougher competition, as the five previously unreleased stories are incredible: the betrayal on Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah (Will Berson and Shaka King); the American dream pursued by a South Korean family of the eighties in Minari (Lee Isaac Chung); the avenging angel of raped and harassed women in Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell); the story of a Rock musician who goes deaf in Sound of Metal (Darius Marder and Abraham Marder) and the injustice imparted in a US court in one of the most notorious cases in its history in The trial of the Chicago 7 (Aaron Sorkin), are not only great stories, told in a great way, but they contain excellent dialogue and engaging characters. My favorites are the last three, but my bet in the category is the script by Aaron Sorkin.
De las ocho categorías sobre las que me falta conversar, que son las principales de la noche, comenzaré por los guiones. El premio a mejor guión adaptado se entrega a los escritores y/o guionistas que redactan un guión basándose en material propio o ajeno, pero siempre de otro medio. Este año tenemos adaptaciones de dos obras de teatro, una novela, un libro de no ficción y un evento político. Sin restar mérito al trabajo de los demás competidores, mis favoritos son The father de Christopher Hampton y Florian Zeller, adaptado de una obra de teatro del propio Zeller y Nomadland de Chloé Zhao, adaptada del libro Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century escrito por Jessica Bruder.
En cuanto a Mejor guión original, me parece una competencia más ardua, ya que las cinco historias inéditas son increíbles: la traición al líder de las panteras negras Fred Hampton en Judas and the Black Messiah (Will Berson y Shaka King); el sueño americano perseguido por una familia surcoreana de los años ochenta en Minari (Lee Isaac Chung); el ángel vengador de las mujeres violadas y acosadas en Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell); la historia de un músico de Rock que se queda sordo en Sound of Metal (Darius Marder y Abraham Marder) y la injusticia impartida en un tribunal de los EEUU en uno de los casos más sonados de su historia en The trial of the Chicago 7 (Aaron Sorkin), no sólo son grandes historias, contadas de gran manera, sino que contienen excelentes diálogos y personajes que atrapan. Mis favoritas son las tres últimas, pero mi apuesta en la categoría es el guión de Aaron Sorkin.

Ladies first. I couldn't see Maria Bakalova's work on Borat Subsequent Moviefilm or Glenn Close's on Hillbilly Elegy in time, so I'll choose from the remaining three nominees. Youn Yuh-jung does excellent as that particular grandmother in Minari, but in my opinion, the category is disputed between the other two: Olivia Colman with her role as Anne in The Father and Amanda Seyfried who, in Mank, plays Marion Davies. I would be happy with either one, Coleman already knows what it is to have a statuette and is the favorite, but Seyfried denotes great maturity and acting evolution in this role

I didn't see Leslie Odom Jr. in One Night in Miami... and although I liked Paul Raci in Sound of Metal and I liked Sacha Baron Cohen even more in The Trial of the Chicago 7 as Abbie Hoffman, I don't think the winner is among them. I thought Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield were the stars of Judas and the Black Messiah, but both are nominated as supporting actors and I think Kaluuya, who already won the Golden Globe with this performance of Fred Hampton, the leader of the black panthers, is the clear favorite to take the category.
No vi a Leslie Odom Jr. en One Night in Miami... y aunque me gustó lo de Paul Raci en Sound of Metal y me gustó todavía más lo de Sacha Baron Cohen en The Trial of the Chicago 7 como Abbie Hoffman, no creo que el ganador esté entre ellos. The Steven Yeun thing in Minari is very good, but he had the misfortune to compete with four outstanding performances, that of the late Chadwick Boseman as Leevee in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom who has already triumphed in the Golden Globes; Gary Oldman as the genius behind the best movie of all time Herman J. With the ladies I had it more difficult. I first saw Frances McDormand as Fern in Nomadland and I loved her, in my opinion she's one of the best actresses of the last decades and is the only one of the nominees to have triumphed in this category previously. Then I saw Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman as Cassie and I was amazed to see her in a different role than usual, with incredible maturity and sobriety to display her talent, so I wanted her to win. Last weekend I saw Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of a Woman and the performance that she gives especially in the first half hour of the film deserves not one but many awards. I thought it would be impossible for me to pick a candidate until two nights ago I saw The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Andra Day not only plays in a great way a black, bisexual woman, addicted to heroin, who despite being famous is denigrated in the midst of a palpable climate of prevailing racism, but that woman is nothing more and nothing less than Billie Holliday, one of the most important and influential female voices in Jazz history. In order to sing like Billie, a pitch higher than hers, Andra exercised with a voice teacher, strained her throat, smoked, started drinking, talking louder, put down scarves and hot teas; In short, he mistreated his vocal cords looking for that scratchy tone that Billie had. That supreme acting commitment paid off and he gives us an anthology performance in his first film appearance. Andra is my favorite, without a doubt.

Andra Day no sólo interpreta de gran manera a una mujer negra, bisexual, adicta a la heroína, que a pesar de ser famosa es denigrada en medio de un clima palpable de imperante racismo, sino que esa mujer es nada más y nada menos que Billie Holliday, una de las voces femeninas más importantes e influyentes de la historia del Jazz. Para poder cantar como Billie, un tono más alto que el suyo, Andra se ejercitó con un profesor de voz, forzó su garganta, fumó, empezó a beber, a hablar más alto, dejó las bufandas y los tés calientes; en resumidas cuentas, maltrató sus cuerdas vocales buscando ese tono rasposo que tenía Billie. Ese supremo compromiso actoral dio frutos y nos regala una interpretación de antología en su primera aparición en el cine. Andra es mi favorita, sin duda.
Best Director | Mejor Director
Until 2020 only five women had been nominated for Best Director and only Kathryn Bigelow won the statuette with The Hurt Locker. This year the same could be repeated since for the first time two women are nominated in the category, Emerald Fennell with Promising Young Woman and Chloé Zhao with Nomadland, my favorite, who has already won the Golden Globe. However, they will not have it easy because they compete with Lee Isaac Chung of Minari, the Danish Thomas Vinterberg and his funny Another Round and the acclaimed David Fincher who seeks to triumph by end with Mank in a category in which he already has two previous nominations.

Family dramas, biographical films, unfortunate episodes in American history, from its past and present, racism, betrayal, illness, death, vindication, injustice, love, revenge, are some of the things that these eight great productions deliver to us. Choosing between them seems extremely difficult because they are all memorable stories. If I choose one, I do it based on the feelings that aroused me and the visual pleasure, the entire cinematographic experience. My favorite candidate would be between Nomadland and The father (I find it very difficult to choose one between these two), closely followed by The Trial of the Chicago 7, Will the members of the Academy think the same? Dramas familiares, películas biográficas, episodios lamentables de la historia norteamericana, de su pasado y su presente, racismo, traición, enfermedad, muerte, reivindicación, injusticia, amor, venganza, son algunas de las cosas que nos entregan estas ocho grandes producciones. Escoger entre ellas me parece sumamente difícil porque todas son historias memorables. Si escojo alguna lo hago partiendo de los sentimientos que me despertaron y el placer visual, la experiencia cinematográfica entera. Mi candidata favorita estaría entre Nomadland y The father (se me hace muy difícil escoger una entre estas dos), seguidas muy de cerca por The Trial of the Chicago 7, ¿pensarán lo mismo los miembros de la Academia? ¿cuáles creen ustedes que serán los ganadores de la noche?
