De los creadores de "Dark"
Streaming TV services are so globalized that the launch of a series or a movie is almost as hyped as theatrical releases and we may find ourselves at a time when almost every person in the world (literally) is watching the same thing. At least that's the feeling left in viewers at every Netflix premiere.
Los servicios de televisión por streaming están tan globalizados que el lanzamiento de una serie o de una película es casi tan publicitado como el de los estrenos en el cine y podemos encontrarnos en un momento en que casi todo el mundo (literalmente) esté viendo lo mismo. Por lo menos esa es la sensación que queda en los espectadores en cada estreno de Netflix.
It's for this reason that everyone, or almost everyone, has already heard about the new series that has just been released, 1899, which has the merit of having been created by the same minds behind Dark, the German series that gave so much to talk about a couple of years ago.
Before continuing with the post, I would like to clarify that I will not make spoilers. On the one hand, I've barely seen a couple of episodes and on the other, since it's a very recent premiere, I don't want to ruin the experience for those who want to venture into this new journey. Now, I will comment on the impressions that those first two episodes caused me and in the event that you have a tendency to be influenceable it's possible that my words predispose you to the experience and that may end up conditioning your own judgment, which is why I would like to make that warning. If you decide to continue reading, very well, continue at your own risk and/or responsibility.
Es por esa razón que ya todos, o casi todos, hemos oído hablar de la nueva serie que acaba de estrenarse, 1899, la cual cuenta con el mérito de haber sido creada por las mismas mentes detrás de Dark, la serie alemana que dio tanto de qué hablar hace un par de años.
Antes de continuar con el post quisiera aclarar que no haré spoilers. Por un lado apenas he visto un par de capítulos y por el otro, dado que es un estreno muy reciente, no quiero arruinar la experiencia de quienes quieran aventurarse en esta nuevo viaje. Ahora bien, sí comentaré las impresiones que me causaron esos dos primeros episodios y en el caso de que tengas la tendencia a ser influenciable es posible que mis palabras te predispongan a la experiencia y eso puede acabar condicionando tu propio juicio, razón por la que me gustaría hacer esa advertencia. Si decides continuar leyendo, muy bien, continúa bajo tu propio riesgo y/o responsabilidad.
In a nutshell 1899 is a period story at sea. We are at the dawn of the 20th century and a ship, the Kerberus, travels from Paris to New York carrying some somewhat curious passengers on board. Although many of these transoceanic voyages carried out in those years bore the stamp of a new beginning in America, in the New World, it seems that each of these characters is running away from something more than just chasing a dream.
En pocas palabras 1899 es una historia de época en el mar. Estamos en los albores del siglo XX y un barco, el Kerberus, viaja de París a Nueva York llevando a bordo algunos pasajeros un tanto curiosos. Si bien muchos de estos viajes transoceánicos efectuados en aquellos años llevaban el sello de un nuevo comienzo en América, en el Nuevo Mundo, parece que cada uno de estos personajes está huyendo de algo más que persiguiendo un sueño.
The real mystery begins when we learn that another ship from the same company, the Prometheus, was lost at sea a few months earlier. At some point the communication with the ship's crew stopped being received and since then nothing more has been heard until Kerberus picks up a signal with a message and at a frequency such that it can only come from Prometheus. In this situation, what should the Captain do? One option is to divert its course and find out the origin and why of the signal, but it would delay the arrival of its passengers in New York. The other is to go long, inform the company without deviating. Obviously as it is a series of mystery and the biggest mystery is the fate of the Prometheus, the Captain decides to divert its course since how is it possible that a ship of such proportions has been lost for four months and has appeared in a place near its route, where has it been all this time? what happened? is the crew safe? the passengers? what happened to the Prometheus? It's assumed that the central part of the series or at least the first season will follow from there.
El misterio real comienza cuando nos enteramos de que otro barco de la misma compañía, el Prometheus, se perdió en altamar unos meses antes. En algún momento se dejó de recibir la comunicación con la tripulación del navío y desde entonces no se supo nada más hasta que el Kerberus capta una señal con un mensaje y en una frecuencia tal que sólo puede provenir del Prometheus. Ante esa situación, ¿qué debe hacer el Capitán? una opción es desviar su curso y averiguar el origen y el por qué de la señal, pero retrasaría la llegada a Nueva York de sus pasajeros. La otra es seguir de largo, informar a la compañía sin desviarse. Obviamente como se trata de una serie de misterio y el mayor misterio es el destino del Prometheus, el Capitán decide desviar su curso ya que ¿cómo es posible que un barco de tales proporciones haya estado cuatro meses perdido y haya aparecido en un lugar cerca de su ruta, ¿en dónde ha estado todo este tiempo? ¿qué ha ocurrido? ¿la tripulación está a salvo? ¿los pasajeros? ¿qué fue lo que le pasó al Prometheus? Se supone que de allí se desprenderá la parte central de la serie o al menos de la primera temporada.
Human beings are curious by nature. I think that's why thrillers and mystery thrillers are so popular. However, I think the introduction to these stories should be very effective. In the case of a book, the first sentence, the first paragraph (or the prologue), must cause you enough curiosity to continue, but at the same time give you something familiar, something certain that serves to lay the foundations of the story that begins to be enjoyed. and that allows the reader to build the plot even little by little. In that regard, Dark was very effective. The questions began at the same time that we were getting to know the characters and their family relationships, their friendships and some things from their past, so the doubts were made about the bridges that were built between one character and another. But it seems to me that 1899 is not so. At least in the first two episodes I feel that it has raised too many questions and has really counted on too little, so it may be that the answers come as a reward for patience when it may already be too late. I mean, I think there is a possible risk that a lot of people will get bored and decide not to continue watching the series before it really starts to be understood.
El ser humano es curioso por naturaleza. Creo que por esa razón los thrillers y las novelas de suspenso y misterio son tan populares. Sin embargo, creo que la introducción a estas historias debe ser muy efectiva. En el caso de un libro, la primera frase, el primer párrafo (o el prólogo), debe causarte suficiente curiosidad para continuar, pero darte al mismo tiempo algo conocido, algo certero que sirva para sentar las bases de la historia que comienza a disfrutarse y que permita al lector construir la trama aunque sea poco a poco. En ese aspecto, Dark fue muy efectiva. Las preguntas comenzaron al mismo tiempo que íbamos conociendo a los personajes y sus relaciones familiares, sus amistades y algunas cosas de su pasado, entonces las dudas se hacían sobre los puentes que se tendían entre un personaje y otro. Pero me da la impresión de que 1899 no es así. Al menos en los dos primeros episodios siento que ha planteado demasiadas preguntas y ha contado verdaderamente muy poco con lo que puede ser que las respuestas vengan como premio a la paciencia cuando quizás ya sea muy tarde. Es decir, creo que existe el riesgo posible de que mucha gente se aburra y decida no seguir viendo la serie antes de que comience a entenderse realmente.
The scenery, the spaces and the temporary setting are striking. As are some characters (and their flashbacks) the fact that different languages are spoken and that phrase What is lost will be found. The central mystery seems to be linked to the Bermuda triangle or something similar (just look at the poster and remember that 3 was an important number in Dark) and that theme is always striking, but I feel that the following chapters (3 and 4) will have to improve and be really good for me to decide to continue until the end of the season and then assess whether or not I'll look forward to the next one, have any of you seen the first two episodes? La escenografía, los espacios y la ambientación temporal son llamativas. Como también lo son algunos personajes (y sus flashbacks), el hecho de que se hablen diferentes idiomas y esa frase What is lost will be found (Lo que está perdido será hallado). El misterio central pareciera estar ligado al triángulo de las bermudas o algo parecido (basta ver el poster y recordar que el 3 fue un número importante en Dark) y ese tema siempre es llamativo, pero siento que los siguientes capítulos (3 y 4) tendrán que mejorar y ser verdaderamente buenos para que decida continuar hasta el final de la temporada y entonces evaluar si esperaré con ansias, o no, la siguiente, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto los primeros dos episodios? ¿les ocurre lo mismo que a mí?
