Greetings friends who love movies and TV series, I hope you are very well. I tell you that I have the habit of reviewing the new movies offered by the different platforms, I read synopses, watching trailers, and then I give a little look at the movie, this with the intention of seeing them later in the company of my daughters (14 and 17). In this process I got The Princess, and I couldn't take a look at it, I watched the whole thing, by myself on my laptop before going to sleep. It has a start that surprised me and the movie kept a rhythm that didn't stop until the end. Next, I plan to tell you about my experience.

Even though the first movie seems to be just another Disney princess story, believe me, there is nothing further from the truth. The Princess is a very entertaining action movie that was released last July 1st on the Disney+ platform. Starring an extraordinary Joey King, who plays a princess who refuses to fulfill an imposed marriage commitment, standing up her fiancé Julius (Dominic Cooper). Julius, not accepting the rejection, takes the castle by surprise one night, staging a coup d'état and intends to force the princess to marry him in order to give legitimacy to the new government he intends to impose.

Les cuento que tengo la costumbre de revisar las películas nuevas que ofrecen las diferentes plataformas, voy leyendo sinopsis, viendo trailes, y luego le doy un pequeño vistazo a la película, esto con la intención de verlas después en compañía de mis hijas (14 y 17). En este proceso me conseguí con The Princess, y no pude echarle un vistazo, la vi completa, yo solo en mi lapto antes de dormir. Es que tiene un inicio que me sorprendió y la película mantuvo un ritmo que no se detuvo hasta tu desenlace. A continuación, pienso contarles mi experiencia.

Aunque la primicia parece ser una historia más de princesas Disney, créanme, no hay nada más alejado de la realidad. The Princess es una película de acción muy entretenida que fue estrenada el pasado primero de julio en la plataforma de Disney+. Protagonizada por una extraordinaria Joey King, quien interpreta a una princesa que se niega a cumplir con un compromiso matrimonial impuesto, dejando plantado su prometido Julius (Dominic Cooper). Julius al no aceptar el rechazo, una noche toma por sorpresa el castillo dando un golpe de estado y pretende obligar a la princesa a casarse con él para darle legitimidad al nuevo gobierno que pretende imponer.

The plot is linear, with no unexpected twists or major revelations. The castle is invaded by Julius and his troops, and the princess must fight to resist and not agree to his plans. Through small flashbacks we will be explaining the context of the story, while the princess will go down floor by floor facing several soldiers, the action sequences are very varied, the Princess will be using all kinds of weapons, swords, a mallet, a stake, a braid of her dress, uses her surroundings as a weapon, there is a sequence in the basement where she fights without using weapons against 3 big guys. There is even a gladiator that reminded me of Crixus from the Spartacus series.

La trama:

La trama es lineal, sin giros inesperados ni grandes revelaciones. El castillo está invadido por Julius y sus tropas, Y la princesa deberá luchar por resistir y no acceder a los planes a los planes de él. Mediante pequeños flaskbacks se nos irá explicando el contexto de la historia, al mismo tiempo que la princesa ira bajando piso por piso enfrentándose a varios soldados, las secuencias de acción son muy variadas, La Princesa irá usando todo tipo de armas, espadas, un mazo, una estaca, una trenza de su vestido, usa su entorno como arma, hay una secuencia en el sótano donde pelea sin usar armas contra 3 grandulones. Hasta aparece un gladiador que me recordó a Crixus de la serie Spartacus.

Joey King is the heart and soul of this movie, this girl has really earned my respect, the action sequences are very extreme, with very well choreographed and minimal use of stunt doubles, and this is the big credit I give Joey. This girl put her heart and soul into this movie and that's something to give her credit for.

Dominic Cooper as Julius, did not convince me this time, and that I have this actor in very good esteem for his leading role as Jesse Custer in the TV series Preacher, where I have seen him perform amazing scenes, but I think this time his talent could have been exploited more.

There is a "deus ex machina" character named Linh, played by Veronica Ngo, who fulfills her role helping the princess and contributes to enriching the action sequences. The role of Moira, Julius' companion, played by Olga Kurylenko, an actress who is known for acting in action movies, we recently saw her as Taskmaster in Black Widow, Moira is an expert with the whip, and will be one of the enemies to be defeated by The Princess.

Los personajes:

Joey King es el alma de esta película, esta chica sí que se ha ganado mi respeto, las secuencias de acción son muy extremas, con coreografía muy bien elaboradas y un uso mínimo de dobles de acción, y es este el gran mérito que le doy a Joey. Esta chica le puso el alma y el corazón a esta película y eso es algo que hay que darle su valor.

Dominic Cooper como Julius, no me convenció en esta ocasión, y eso que tengo a este actor en muy buena estima por su papel protagónico de Jesse Custer en la serie de TV Preacher, donde lo he visto realizar escenas alucinantes, pero creo que en esta ocasión se pudo haber explotado más su talento.

Hay un personaje “deus ex machina” llamado Linh, interpretado por Veronica Ngo, que cumple con su papel ayudando a la princesa y contribuye enriqueciendo las secuencias de acción. También destacó el papel de Moira, la compañera de Julius, interpretada por Olga Kurylenko, actriz que se caracteriza por actuar en películas de acción, recientemente la vimos como Taskmaster en Black Widow, Moira es una experta con el látigo, y será uno de los enemigos a vencer por La Princesa.

The film begins with a shot of a castle, which has a large tower that stands out for its height, the camera enters through a window of that tower to show the young princess in a wedding dress, with her hands trapped by handcuffs, men's voices are heard outside the room, hearing that someone is going to enter, she pretends to be asleep. A couple of disgusting soldiers come in, one of them approaches to watch her closely, she hits him, she gets up, while the surprised soldiers watch her with a certain mocking attitude, she pulls her big finger out of her hand to free herself from the handcuffs, while she screams with fury because of the pain and puts her finger back in its place, immediately after, the princess starts a fight, where they hit her hard but she makes use of her agility to kill the first one with a hook that was in her hair, she buries it in his eye and kills him, then she fights with the second one using everything she finds as a weapon until she manages to throw him out the window, she hears that a third one is going to enter the room, she takes a big mallet and as soon as she opens the door, she hits him in the chest and then she kills him. He hits him in the chest and then finishes him off on the floor. And this is all I will tell about the movie, this scene is the best calling card of what the whole movie is going to be.

El Inicio de la historia

La película inicia con una toma castillo, el cual tiene una gran torre que destaca por su altura, la cámara entra por una ventana de esa torre para mostrar a la joven princesa con un vestido de novia, con las manos atrapadas por unas esposas, se oyen voces de hombres afuera de la habitación, al escuchar que alguien va a entrar, ella finge estar dormida. Entran un par de soltados asquerosos, uno de ellos se acerca para observarla de cerca, ella lo golpea, se levanta, mientras los soldados sorprendidos la observan con cierta actitud burlona, ella se saca el dedo gordo de la mano para así poder liberarse de las esposas, mientras grita con furia por el dolor y vuelve a colocar el dedo en su lugar, acto seguido, la princesa inicia una pelea, donde la golpean fuerte pero ella hace uso de su agilidad para matar al primero con un gancho que traía en su cabello, lo entierra es su ojo y lo mata, luego va peleando con el segundo usando todo lo que encuentra como arma hasta que logra arrojarlo por la ventana, escucha que un tercero va a entra a la habitación, toma un gran mazo y en cuanto abre la puerta .lo golpea en el pecho y luego lo remata en el piso. Y esto es todo lo que contaré de la película, esta escena es la mejor tarjeta de presentación de lo que va a ser toda la película.

The Princess has the most uneven mise-en-scene I can remember seeing. It's literally two movies in one, the camerawork is impeccable during the fights, with very well designed and executed choreographies at the level of any respectable action movie, watching Joey King as The Princess is a total joy, so much so that she ends up being the only enjoyable part of the movie. The CGI is extraordinarily poor, it looks like it was made from a phone with a free app downloaded from the Play Store, they look like they are from 1986, there is a scene where a soldier is set on fire and these flames look like they were added using Paint; I understand that details like this are attributed to the budget of the production and for that reason you can even let it pass since the action makes up for it. The film has a couple of other negative details in terms of acting and character development, but I won't dwell on them since, thanks to the action and pacing, they can be overlooked and I even laughed at them. Another positive detail is the use of humor, introduced in a very accurate and timely manner.

La puesta en escena

The Princess tiene la puesta en escena más irregular que recuerdo haber visto. Literalmente son dos películas en una, la puesta en cámara es impecable durante las peleas, con coreografías muy bien diseñadas y ejecutadas al nivel de cualquier película de acción respetable, observa a Joey King como La Princesa es un disfrute total, de tal forma que ella termina siendo lo único disfrutable de la película. El C.G.I. es extraordinariamente deficiente, pareciera que lo hicieron desde un teléfono con una aplicación descargada gratis desde la Play Store, es que parecen de 1986, hay una escena donde un soldado se prende en llamas y estas llamas parece que se las agregaron usando Paint; entiendo que detalles como este se atribuyen al presupuesto de la producción y por tal motivo hasta se puede dejar pasar ya que la acción lo compensa. La película tiene otro par de detalles negativos en cuanto a actuaciones y desarrollos de personajes, pero no me extenderé en ellos ya que, gracias a la acción y el ritmo, se dejan pasar y hasta me reía con ellos. Otro detalle positivo es el uso del humor, introducido de manera muy acertada y oportuna.

The Princess is a very entertaining action film, with excellent action sequences, with a vulnerable yet very empowered protagonist, who is easily empathized with from the beginning, she is intelligent, bold with genuine motivations. Joey King's performance is on par with the films I have mentioned, however, The Princess movie is not. So don't expect to see a film that will go down in history as the best, but do expect a performance that is going to stand out within the genre. My humble rating for The Princess is a 6.5/10, as despite its flaws it kept me entertained and I had a very enjoyable time with nothing to bother me or take me out of comfort. It's worth watching with the family and having a good time on a Sunday afternoon.

En conclusión

The Princess es una película de acción muy entretenida, con excelentes secuencias de acción, con una protagonista vulnerable y a la vez muy empoderada, con la que se empatiza fácilmente desde el principio, es inteligente, audaz con motivaciones genuinas. La actuación de Joey King está al nivel de las películas que he mencionado, no obstante, la película The Princess no lo está. Así que no esperes ver una película que pase a la historia como las mejores, pero sí una actuación que va a destacar dentro de género. Mi humilde calificación para The Princess es un 6.5/10, ya que pese a sus fallos me mantuvo entretenido y pase un muy agradable momento sin nada que me molestará o me sacara del confort. Vale la pena verla en familia y pasar un buen rato un domingo por la tarde.
