Talentos ocultos, es una película basada en hechos de la vida real, en donde tres valerosas mujeres se esfuerzan por alcanzar sus sueños en una época y un país totalmente divido por el prejuicio egoísta y la crueldad del racismo.
La década de los sesenta enfoca su atención a una de las historias más asombras que a mi parecer se han podido llevar a la pantalla grande, y el estado de Virginia (Estados Unidos) fue la cuna que vio nacer esta fascinante obra maestra, cargada de mucha reflexión y con mensajes que hasta hoy podrían ser muy aplicables en nuestra sociedad.
La gran parte de la película se desarrolla dentro de las oficinas de una de las más reconocidas agencias de programas espaciales, la NASA, bajo la pugna de dos potencias mundiales, como lo son Estados Unidos y Rusia, por alcanzar los dominios que van más allá de nuestro planeta y así llegar a ser los pioneros en un campo de la investigación que desde siempre ha inquietado y llamado la atención del hombre como lo es la carrera espacial.
Katherine Goble, Mary Jackson y Dorothy Vaughan entrelazan sus caminos para darle vida a una historia donde la unión y los fuertes lazos de la amistad entre ellas serán la clave para seguir adelante y brillar con luz propia en una sociedad cegada por la parcialidad y el orgullo racista.
Hidden Talents is a film based on real life events, where three courageous women strive to achieve their dreams in an era and a country totally divided by selfish prejudice and the cruelty of racism.
The decade of the sixties focuses its attention on one of the most amazing stories that in my opinion have been brought to the big screen, and the state of Virginia (United States) was the cradle that saw the birth of this fascinating masterpiece, loaded with much reflection and with messages that even today could be very applicable in our society.
The main part of the film takes place inside the offices of one of the most renowned agencies of space programs, NASA, under the struggle of two world powers, the United States and Russia, to reach the domains that go beyond our planet and thus become the pioneers in a field of research that has always concerned and attracted the attention of mankind, such as the space race.
Katherine Goble, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan intertwine their paths to give life to a story where the union and the strong bonds of friendship between them will be the key to move forward and shine with their own light in a society blinded by bias and racist pride.
Katherine “la computadora” Goble es una mujer con un potencial innato para los números, algo que desde niña fue tan evidente y que gracias al apoyo de sus familiares pudo abrirse paso hasta llegar a uno de los puestos y lugar de trabajo más exigentes que puedan existir en el mundo.
A pesar de poseer un don sobresaliente con las matemáticas, Katherine no escapa de las situaciones comunes de la vida que pueden mermar los deseos de alcanzar sus metas, como el hecho de ser una viuda joven y con tres niñas que cuidar, pero siempre contando con la ayuda y el apoyo de su madre.

Despite possessing an outstanding gift for mathematics, Katherine does not escape from common life situations that can dampen her desire to achieve her goals, such as being a young widow with three girls to take care of, but always counting on the help and support of her mother.
Por otro lado, nos encontramos con una joven emprendedora de sueños como lo es Mary Jackson, tan comprometida con su familia, esposo y dos hijos, además como con su trabajo. Una mujer valiente que se verá ante el reto más grande de su vida: tratar de ser la primera en alcanzar un título universitario en una carrera donde hasta aquel entonces, ninguna persona de color podía siquiera pensar en intentarlo.
On the other hand, we meet a young entrepreneur of dreams as Mary Jackson, as committed to her family, husband and two children, as well as to her work. A brave woman who will face the biggest challenge of her life: trying to be the first to achieve a college degree in a career where, until then, no person of color could even think of trying.
Y si hablamos de retos y obstáculos, debemos prestar muchísima atención a la vida de Dorothy Vaughan, la mayor de las tres pero con un espíritu tan joven y luchador como el de Katherine y Mary. Una mujer perfeccionista en su trabajo y con una inmaculada trayectoria laboral que ha mantenido durante muchísimos años y que ahora será desafiada por un contrincante de altos quilates: la tecnología. ¿Quién ganará la pelea entre una computadora y una mente brillante?

También podemos sumar a esta emocionante historia al científico de la NASA Al Harrison, hombre matemático cargado de ese orgullo americano por ser los primeros y los mejores en todo, y con el sueño de llevar al hombre más allá de los cielos, incluso con la ilusión de algún día poder llevarlo a la luna. Hombre de carácter algo frio pero firme, entregado a su país y los números como su gran pasión.
We can also add to this exciting story the NASA scientist Al Harrison, a mathematical man full of American pride for being the first and the best in everything, and with the dream of taking man beyond the skies, even with the illusion of someday being able to take him to the moon. A man of a somewhat cold but firm character, dedicated to his country and numbers as his great passion.
A pesar de ser la NASA el escenario principal de la historia, la película nos deja ver pequeños trazos de esos momentos que sin duda fueron el empuje y soporte en la vida de estas tres excepcionales mujeres: compartir con los hijos, la unión familiar, ir a la iglesia, comer juntos y hasta poder ver las conversaciones que tenían mientras llegaban o regresaban a su trabajo.
El punto clave de la película llega cuando los rusos toman la delantera en la carrera espacial, lo cual a su vez trae las dudas y la desesperación en las oficinas más remotas de la NASA. Tal situación lleva a “la computadora” Katherine a indagar más allá de su evidente talento natural, y así logra encontrar algo que llegará a romper las barreras del triunfo de una forma como nunca antes aquella nación lo había conocido.
Despite NASA being the main setting of the story, the film allows us to see small traces of those moments that undoubtedly were the drive and support in the lives of these three exceptional women: sharing with their children, family bonding, going to church, eating together and even being able to see the conversations they had while arriving or returning to work.
The key point of the film comes when the Russians take the lead in the space race, which in turn brings doubts and despair in NASA's most remote offices. Such a situation leads "the computer" Katherine to look beyond her obvious natural talent, and she manages to find something that will break the barriers to success in a way that the nation has never known before.
Y es aquí donde se abre el abanico de todo lo que podemos extraer y aprender de esta película. Una de las primeras cosas que me gustó fue la forma como se manejó algo tan delicado y fuerte como lo es el tema del racismo, un problema que aún en nuestros tiempos sigue afectando a la sociedad. A veces, he visto películas donde se usa el punto de la violencia extrema para remarcar el efecto del racismo pero en esta película no es así, se supo manejar de manera equilibrada algo que tampoco se puede borrar de los libros de la historia, por más que queramos.
Vemos como la sociedad se encontraba encerrada al prejuicio y la arrogancia de ver la vida en dos tonos de colores y denigrando a la otra parte😢. La película deja ver hasta dónde puede llegar ese irrazonable proceder que nos puede llevar a complicar la vida de los demás hasta para poder tomar un vaso de agua, ir al baño o querer leer un libro, y todo por la marcada clase social de color.
En la década de los sesenta, ser mujer era subestimable, y ser de color también, así que ser una mujer de color era algo totalmente cuestionable y debatible para una sociedad cegada por los prejuicios. Incluso para unas mujeres con alto índice intelectual, era una gran lucha para ellas el poder conseguir el reconocimiento y el respeto que cualquier persona o trabajador merece por hacer y dar lo mejor en su ocupación.
Las vidas de Katherine, Mary y Dorothy nos dejan un excelente ejemplo de esfuerzo, superación, motivación, de nunca rendirse ante los obstáculos que se puedan presentar en tu camino. Brillar con luz propia aunque otros no quieran reconocerlo es algo que también percibo como enseñanza, el no tener miedo a ser los pioneros en alcanzar aquello que deja de ser inalcanzable cuando experimentas el dulce momento de llegar a la meta.💪
And it is here where the range of everything we can extract and learn from this film opens up. One of the first things I liked was the way it handled something as delicate and strong as the issue of racism, a problem that even in our times continues to affect society. Sometimes, I have seen films where extreme violence is used to highlight the effect of racism, but in this film it is not like that, it was handled in a balanced way something that cannot be erased from the history books, no matter how much we want it to be.
We see how society was locked into the prejudice and arrogance of seeing life in two shades of color and denigrating the other side😢. The film lets us see how far this unreasonable behavior can lead us to complicate the lives of others even to be able to drink a glass of water, go to the bathroom or want to read a book, and all because of the marked social class of color.
In the 1960s, being a woman was underestimated, and being a woman of color was underestimated, so being a woman of color was something totally questionable and debatable for a society blinded by prejudice. Even for high IQ women, it was a great struggle for them to get the recognition and respect that any person or worker deserves for doing and giving their best in their occupation.
The lives of Katherine, Mary and Dorothy leave us with an excellent example of effort, self-improvement, motivation, of never giving up in the face of obstacles that may come your way. To shine with your own light even if others do not want to recognize it is something that I also perceive as a teaching, not to be afraid to be the pioneers in achieving that which is no longer unattainable when you experience the sweet moment of reaching the goal.💪
Para mí, la motivación y la amistad sobresalen de principio a fin en la película, y nos hace un llamado de concientización para los que formamos parte de algún grupo de trabajo, de ver que no se trata de llegar al triunfo solos, sino que como equipo, como familia, poder llegar más lejos y sacar lo mejor que somos.
Quizás lo más destacable de esta historia es que, al tratarse de tres mujeres con una dote intelectual catalogada como “mentes brillantes”, no te deja con la sensación de que son historias inéditas que jamás se repetirán. Más bien, el mensaje que percibo es que todos podemos sacar nuestro talento y hacerlo brillar con la misma motivación de estas valientes mujeres que dejaron una huella imborrable en la historia de una sociedad que aún trastabilla con el tema de la parcialidad racial y laboral.
For me, motivation and friendship stand out from beginning to end in the film, and it makes us a call of awareness for those of us who are part of a work group, to see that it is not about reaching triumph alone, but as a team, as a family, to reach further and get the best out of ourselves.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this story is that, as it is about three women with an intellectual endowment classified as "brilliant minds", it does not leave you with the feeling that these are unpublished stories that will never be repeated. Rather, the message I perceive is that we can all bring out our talents and make them shine with the same motivation as these brave women who left an indelible mark on the history of a society still reeling from the issue of racial and labor bias.
Sin duda amigos, “talentos ocultos” es una película que nos invita a descubrir lo que podemos ser y aportar para el mundo, y de cómo una vida llena de motivación, disciplina, esfuerzo y valores nos puede brindar el más hermoso propósito para existir y la felicidad que nada ni nadie podrá apagar.
