Nowadays, when we talk about Marvel's most iconic superheroes, the first names that cross our minds are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man, truth is that this wasn’t always the case. In fact, by the early 2000s the film rights to their most popular superheroes were split; the X-Men belonged to 20th Century Fox, while the rights to Marvel's then most famous superhero and practically the face of their company, Spider-Man, were in the hands of Sony. This is why Marvel took the risky decision to open a studio in which they would independently produce their own films, taking all the artistic decisions themselves. This is how Marvel Studios was born and also the movie that unleashed the superhero’s movies phenomenon: Iron Man, a risky movie to say the least since it was about a character that wasn’t precisely popular.
So without any further ado, let's start the review!
The film was directed by Jon Favreau and produced by the newly founded Marvel Studios, it was released on April 30, 2008, and it is the first film to form part of what today is now known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The plot revolves around Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), he’s the eccentric director of the multimillionaire company Stark Industries, which is dedicated to the creation of military armament, and besides this he’s a genius in engineering. Tony is in Afghanistan showcasing the latest weapon produced by his company, the "Jericho" missile, and everything is apparently under control until a convoy in which he was traveling is intercepted by a terrorist group and he witnesses how one of the attackers' missiles is from his company, Stark Industries, and in the explosion, shrapnel fragments are embedded in his body.
Tony is kidnapped by this group of terrorists and is forced to work for them replicating the technology of the Jericho missile and delivering it to them, with the false promise of being released after this, Stark refuses to collaborate and decides to create a miniature Arc Reactor to keep the shrapnel away from his heart, and also to create an iron exoskeleton to help him escape. Thus, with the help of Yinsen (Shoun Toub), he manages to create his first armor and escapes from the cave where he is being held captive, although unfortunately Yinsen does not succeed. Three months have passed since Stark was kidnapped and after escaping and returning safe and sound to the United States, the first thing he decides to do is to hold a press conference in which he announces that Stark Industries will stop the production of military armament, because he witnessed how his armament was being used in ways he never imagined and also that the world was much bigger and crueler than he thought. Apart from this, he secretly started to work on an improved version of the armor with which he managed to escape from the cave in Afghanistan, thus beginning his career as Iron Man.
Overall, the film maintains a fairly light tone despite the seriousness of the themes it touches on, it’s easy and comfortable to watch. The amount of action is adequate and I feel that at no point do they go overboard with it, in fact I would have liked to see a little more. This movie also established the way humor was going to work throughout the whole UCM, which at first doesn't sound bad, but considering we are talking about 23 movies... One of the things I enjoyed the most in this movie are the scenes where Stark develops his suit, for some reason they are extremely fascinating to watch and give free rein to imagine what we would do with a fortune of millions and millions of dollars and the mind of an engineering genius. Another thing that struck me is, for being 13 years old movie, its special effects have aged quite well, although there are some funny CGI details, truth is that it still looks very good even today.
The worst thing about the movie is something I like to call: "Marvel's Evil", and that is that its villain is easily forgettable, even considering Obadiah Stane is one of the best Iron Man had in terms of villains. I call this Marvel's Evil because many of their movies suffer from the same thing: flat and boring villains that work only as an excuse to move the plot, logically there are outstanding exceptions to this rule, having incredible villains such as Thanos or Loki doesn’t justify that the rest of the movies have mediocre villains, to say something.
I think it’s not wrong to say that the best the movie has is Robert Downey Jr, the work he does playing Tony Stark isn’t only masterful but it gives a new identity to the character, in the comics Stark was extremely conflicted and uncharismatic, Robert Downey Jr's performance defined Tony Stark's personality in any medium (movies, comics, video games) from that moment on. Curiously, this new opportunity that the character has both in the film and in his reinterpretation by Robert Downey Jr. is also a new opportunity for the actor; he had had a life full of vices and excesses that had practically ended his career, however, after his rehabilitation he was offered this role that elevated his career to levels that not even he himself could have imagined.
It is incredible how much the success of this film unleashed, not only did it develop what is now the largest universe of interconnected movies in cinema, but it also dictated the way superhero movies are made and even gave rise to the development of an entire subgenre from it. The Avengers, superheroes that until that moment were in a kind of "oblivion" became the greatest heroes of pop culture, the Marvel Cinematic Universe phenomenon is unparalleled, and it all started here. Overall, Iron Man delivers quite well not only as part of the UCM but as a movie on its own, it has a good plot, outstanding performances, good doses of action and comedy, and an incredible legacy.
It was the perfect start.

Si bien hoy en día al hablar de los superhéroes más icónicos de Marvel los primeros nombres que se cruzan por nuestras mentes son el Capitán América, Hulk, Thor, y Iron Man, lo cierto es que esto no siempre fue así. De hecho, para principios de los 2000 los derechos cinematográficos de sus superhéroes más populares estaban repartidos; los X-Men pertenecían a 20th Century Fox, mientras que, los derechos de el en ese entonces superhéroe más famoso de Marvel y prácticamente la cara de su empresa, Spiderman, estaban en manos de Sony. Es por esto que Marvel tomo la arriesgada decisión de abrir un estudio en el que produjeran de forma independiente sus propias películas, tomando ellos todas las decisiones artísticas. Fue así como nació Marvel Studios y la película que desato el fenómeno del cine de superhéroes: Iron Man, una película arriesgada por decir menos ya que se trataba de un personaje no precisamente muy popular.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos con la reseña!
Esta película fue dirigida por Jon Favreau y producida por el recién fundado Marvel Studios, fue estrenada el 30 de abril del 2008, y la primera película de lo que hoy en día se conoce como el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel. En ella conocemos a Tony Stark (interpretado por Robert Downey Jr), él es el excéntrico director de la multimillonaria empresa Stark Industries, la cual se dedica a la creación de armas para la guerra, además de esto es un genio en la ingeniería. Tony se encuentra en Afganistán haciendo una demostración de la última arma producida por su compañía, el misil “Jericó”, y todo está aparentemente bajo control hasta que un convoy en el que se trasladaba es interceptado por un grupo terrorista y presencia como uno de los misiles de los atacantes es de su compañía, Stark Industries, y en la explosión, fragmentos de metralla se incrustan en su cuerpo.
Tony es secuestrado por este grupo de terroristas y es obligado a trabajar para ellos replicando la tecnología del misil Jericó y entregándoselas, con la falsa promesa de ser liberado luego de esto, Stark se niega a colaborar y decide crear un Reactor Arc en miniatura que mantenga la metralla alejada de su corazón, y además, crear un exoesqueleto de hierro que le ayude a escapar. Es así como con ayuda de Yinsen (Shoun Toub), logra crear su primera armadura y escapar de la cueva donde se encuentra cautivo, aunque desafortunadamente Yinsen no lo logra. Tres meses han pasado desde que Stark es secuestrado y después de escapar y volver sano y salvo a los Estados Unidos lo primero que decide es hacer una rueda de prensa en la que anuncia que Stark Industries detendrá la producción de armas debido a que fue testigo de cómo su armamento era utilizado de maneras que no se imaginaba y que el mundo era mucho más grande y cruel de lo que él pensaba. A parte de esto, en secreto comienza a trabajar en una versión mejorada de la armadura con la que logró escapar de la cueva en Afganistán, dando así inicio a su carrera como Iron Man.
En general, la película mantiene un tono bastante ligero a pesar de la seriedad de los temas que toca, es fácil y cómoda de ver. La cantidad de acción es adecuada y siento que en ningún momento se exceden con ella, de hecho me hubiese gustado ver un poco más. Esta película también estableció la manera en la que el humor iba a funcionar a lo largo de todo el UCM, cosa que no suena mal, pero si consideramos que estamos hablando de 23 películas pues… De las cosas que más disfruto de esta película son las escenas en las que Stark desarrolla su traje, por alguna razón son sumamente fascinantes de ver y dan rienda suelta a imaginarnos lo que haríamos nosotros con una fortuna de millones y millones de dólares y la mente de un genio en la ingeniería. Otra cosa que me pareció es que para ser una película de hace 13 años, sus efectos especiales han envejecido bastante bien, si bien se notan algunos detalles un poco graciosos en el CGI la verdad es que se sigue viendo muy bien incluso a día de hoy.
Lo peor de la película es algo a lo que me gusta llamarle: “El mal de Marvel”, y es que su villano es fácilmente olvidable, incluso considerando que Obadiah Stane es de lo mejorcito que tuvo Iron Man en cuanto a villanos. Le llamo a esto el Mal de Marvel porque muchas de sus películas sufren de lo mismo: villanos planos y aburridos que funcionan solo como una excusa para mover la trama, lógicamente hay excepciones sobresalientes a esta regla, pero que Thanos o Loki sean villanos increíbles no justifica que el resto de películas tengan villanos mediocres, por ejemplo.
Creo que no es incorrecto decir que lo mejor de la película es Robert Downey Jr, el trabajo hace interpretando a Tony Stark no solo es magistral sino que le da una nueva identidad al personaje, en los comics Stark era sumamente conflictuado y poco carismático, la actuación de Robert Downey Jr definió la personalidad de Tony Stark en cualquier medio (películas, comics, videojuegos) a partir de ese momento. Curiosamente esta nueva oportunidad que tiene el personaje tanto en la película como en su reinterpretación por parte de Robert Downey Jr es también una nueva oportunidad para el actor; este había tenido una vida llena de vicios y excesos que prácticamente habían terminado con su carrera, sin embargo, luego de rehabilitarse se le ofreció este papel que elevó su carrera a niveles que ni siquiera el mismo podría haber imaginado.
Es increíble todo lo que el éxito de esta película desencadenó, no solo desarrolló lo que es hasta ahora el universo más grande de películas interconectadas en el cine, sino que dictó la forma de hacer películas de superhéroes e incluso dio pie a que se desarrollara todo un subgénero a partir de ella. Los Vengadores, superhéroes que hasta ahora estaban en una especie de “olvido” pasaron a ser los más grandes héroes de la cultura pop, el fenómeno del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel no tiene comparación, y todo comenzó aquí. En general, Iron Man cumple bastante bien no solo como parte del UCM sino como película por sí misma, tiene una buena trama, actuaciones sobresalientes, buenas dosis de acción y comedia, y un legado increíble.
Fue el comienzo perfecto.
On a weekly basis I will be watching and reviewing all the UCM movies from Iron Man to Avengers: Endgame, I had wanted to start this project for a while now but hadn't had much free time to do it. I've also been a bit away from Marvel since I saw Endgame, for some reason, after watching it I feel like something snapped inside me haha and I haven't seen any more of Marvel, so I haven't seen anything after Endgame. Maybe dropping by again will revive my love for superheroes; in the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this little review. What about you? Did you like Iron Man?
Semanalmente estaré viendo y reseñando todas las películas del UCM desde Iron Man hasta Avengers: Endgame, había querido comenzar con este proyecto desde hace un tiempo pero no había tenido mucho tiempo libre para hacerlo. También estoy un poco alejado de Marvel desde que vi Endgame, por alguna razón, luego de verla siento que algo se rompió dentro de mi jaja y no he visto más de Marvel, por lo que no he visto nada después de Endgame. Quizás pasar de nuevo por aquí reviva mi amor por los superhéroes, mientras tanto, espero que hayan disfrutado esta pequeña reseña. ¿Y tú? ¿Te gustó Iron Man?
