Deer Vomit fungus

This rather spectacular orange goo is a combination of bacteria and yeast that lands on the excessively bleeding sap of a grape vine, which provides a source of nutrition for this fungus to thrive and grow. It seems to prefer the warm wet weather further south and this is the first time I have noticed it here in Wisconsin.

Known by the common name of Deer Vomit, FUSICOLLA MERISMOIDES is a mix of fungi, including yeasts and bacteria. The various organisms grow quite happily on the wet, carbohydrate-rich sap.

Depending on your point of view, It may look unsightly, but it is harmless to the vine. During the growing season they will eventually dry up, and I've noticed that the vines that it is growing on that receive more sun are already losing their brilliant orange color.
