Fungi Friday : The Shining Skin or The Ganoderma

IMG_7333.JPG

A piece of wood that looked like it had been burned was lying on the grass. There was no mistaking it was a piece of wood from a pine tree that was found in abundance at that location. The piece would have probably been overlooked, as I passed by, if there wasn't something else in the orange that caught my eye.

It does look shiny or lacquered, as its name, Ganoderma, comes from the Greek and means shiny skin. The surface of the cap clearly has a leathery (coriaceous) texture, but we can see the attractive ornament with the fruit body expanding like a fan, and without the stem.

Genoderma is a genus that includes about 80 species. Many in the tropics. They are white rot fungi, possessing enzymes that can break down wood components. It is also said that various species of Ganoderma have been used in traditional medicine since ancient times. (Source).
