El propósito general de la educación
es la de convertir espejos en ventanas.

The general purpose of education
is to turn mirrors into windows.

Sydney J. Harris

When we have a child and become responsible for his or her growth, evolution, and future, many questions and concerns come into our lives. One of them is education, an issue that encompasses both the formation at home (a very important point), as well as that which is generated when the child must attend a school and socialize in addition to being taught in the academic part by the teaching staff of the schools.

When it is our turn to select the school where our children will be academically instructed, a touch of concern comes into our lives because it is a very important responsibility to select the place where our children will spend many hours (more than at home sometimes) being taught from many points of view.

The first steps in terms of education, our children receive it at home. But, when they reach the age of three, they must attend schools, places where they will cultivate their knowledge and will also allow them to have contact with the outside world, beyond the walls of the home, the only place after the womb that they get to know at that stage.

The first school we choose is the kindergarten or in many places previously known as kindergarten or preschool. And it is so-called because it is the initial education, which is divided into levels of knowledge. Generally, there are three levels, where children acquire initial knowledge in terms of reading, writing, painting, and handicrafts in many cases. This is the first contact with the outside world. There they also learn what it is to socialize and play with their peers and learn the initial value of friendship.

Then comes primary education, which is divided into first through sixth grade and includes formal and academic education beyond the initial preschool contact with letters and shapes. There, as they advance through the grades, they learn about academic subjects related to many topics, which will vary according to the country where this education takes place.

This is followed by high school education, which covers the stage of adolescence, a very difficult time to cope with and usually presents many pitfalls along the way, which must be conducted and faced by parents, most intelligently and patiently. Here there may be moments of rebellion, bullying, and other problems that are typical of this stage.

Nothing like good and effective communication with our children, to overcome this time, ensuring the entry to the last stage of education, such as college. In this last stage, most of the responsibility in terms of choice will be of our children, who already become adults at the beginning, will know how to choose what they want to study and what will be best for their future.

When I had to select a school for my son Gabriel, I cannot deny that it was a complex moment because as a parent, I would like to find something that would be close to perfect and adequate. When I talk about perfection, I mean a comfortable and safe place from every point of view, besides having teachers with the best professional and human preparation, which can guarantee a safe stay and education for our children.

Many people tried to fill my head with ideas about this choice. They advised me to choose the largest and most prestigious schools. Those where the tuition was high and therefore, some of them are quite expensive. Although the latter would not be the limiting factor since we parents always make any sacrifice for the education of our children.

My mother (Gabriel's grandmother), helped me a lot in this task of visiting and choosing the right school. It was one of small enrollment, which although it was not the most famous, had good references in terms of academic training and humane treatment and care with children. Apart from that, it also had comfortable and convenient facilities, suitable for my son's stay and education.

Gabriel's childhood was spent there and I am not complaining because it was from this center, in the last years (fifth and sixth grade exactly), that he was prepared to face the high school stage. He had two wonderful teachers who implemented a methodology similar to the one the children were going to face in high school so that when they entered that next stage, they would already be adapted and would not experience traumas that would lead to bad grades and postponed years. For me, it was the best choice.

When the high school stage arrived, I also had a shower of recommendations from famous high schools and others. However, amid fear, because Gabriel studied in a school with a small enrollment, I chose, on the recommendation of a great friend, a prestigious high school full of many human values, as well as a high-level academic formation.

I have to tell you that I was afraid when I made this choice because, since my son came from a school with few students, I doubted whether he would be able to adapt to a school with a large number of children. However, my biggest surprise was the degree of independence and maturity that Gabriel showed me from the first weeks of studying there.

The selection of a school for our children should be focused more on what we can see and what we like for them, rather than on myths or references that we have not checked. I think it is as important when choosing, both the academic level and the human values of the teachers and of course, the facilities are also important.

Beyond a famous or luxurious school, I feel that the human level and the attention of the professionals to whom we entrust the responsibility of educating our children is a very important point to take into account.

Professionals and human beings that prepare our children for life, in a harmonious and pleasant environment. In a place where they feel at ease and always want to come back and motivate them to want to study. I think that this when choosing, is the most important thing to consider.

The school is that place, after home, where we should feel better and it is our responsibility as parents to make a good choice and guarantee a happy childhood and adolescence to our children, preparing them for adulthood and therefore, for a good life.
