Discipline can sometimes be overwhelming, even out of time, at other times, perhaps, we have been raised in such a rigid way that we promise ourselves to be more flexible when we have children, however, we have to recognize that rules are necessary because with them we can build a more harmonious coexistence.

One of the proposals this week from the friends of motherhood is to talk about another mom's post. Reviewing I found #danielam530 article titled: What to do if... where she talks about discipline and offers some wise advice to handle situations that may arise with our children. Let's talk about this issue.

Discipline is an exciting topic, especially when referring to human behavior, which can be surrounded by multiple factors that make it impossible to find a single, infallible recipe to make it work. I think it is more appropriate to understand it as a process that is built in the family dynamics.

It is a very revealing phrase from Daniela, one fine day we realize that our little child acts in a way that is not the way we want, wish or expect, suddenly we do not explain where that behavior came from because we consider that we have not given him that example or he has not seen those reactions in other children to imitate them, however, there they are.

One thing is certain, although they may surprise us, these behaviors do not come out overnight, certain conditions have been created for them to occur, for example: he cries and we give him what he wants or we pay more attention to him when he cries than when he is calm; he throws things and we pick them up again and again, he grabs the objects he wants, even when they are of value to us.

All these actions are forming in the mind of our baby:

A.- The concept that there are no limits.

B.- That by crying he gets what he wants.

C.- That he can go "watering" and someone else will pick it up.

At the beginning his answers make us happy, we recognize how he is advancing in his development and understanding of the world, that excites us, makes us feel happy, we support him and we even make a game out of them. Let's illustrate this idea with a very common game: we have him/her sitting in his/her eating chair and we, very close, at the table; he/she throws the spoon, we bend down, we pick it up, we give it to him/her; he/she throws it again, we pick it up and give it to him/her again and so a cycle begins.

These innocent actions help the child to form concepts and, in a very elementary way, he/she builds his/her idea of cause-effect. At the moment that his act does not have the expected response, he will most probably demand it in the way he can: by crying, if our answer to stop him crying is to give him the spoon, we introduce a new element: the power of crying.

And this is one of Daniela's recommendations: Do not give in to crying and tantrums because this teaches her that it is an effective and infallible method to get what she wants.

Therefore, it is relevant that in the upbringing of our children we nurture the behaviors we want them to follow, for that it is convenient:

A.- pay more attention to them when they are happy or calm than when they cry, always checking that the crying is not because they are in discomfort, hungry or for any other important reason.

B.- Stimulate their learning with a criterion of "what is best for everyone" which may cause us discomfort, at a given time, is not a good idea.

C.- Teaching with affection is part of the best method. Don't wait to be "full" to give guidance.

D.- Part of the present and future happiness of our children is found in the "flexible limits" that we build with them.
