Ayudando a mi hijo en su regreso a clase //Helping my child back to school [ESP-ING]

Our children have spent a month on vacation. A month of games, relaxation, rest, walks, visits, sharing experiences in other environments and in general, they left the school routine aside. Now the beginning of a new school year is approaching and even though we are still waiting to see if it.

will be an on-line, on-site or blended learning, in any of the three cases, it is the right time to resume some habits and learning activities that will help our children to refresh their skills.

As it is a period of initiation, the first advisable habit is to define a short time to put them in a learning activity. Set a schedule that can range from twenty minutes to an hour. The idea is that it should be every day and at the same time, that the child feels that it is a moment where his attention will be focused on a school activity and for which it is appropriate to create an environment with as few distractions as possible, that is: no TV or phones nearby or people interrupting the activity. It is only one hour!

What to take into account?

kid-3326960_640.png

The activities in this period are aimed at reinforcing the basic tools for all learning, these are: reading, writing and mathematical logical thinking and here it is important to take into account the following aspects:

  • To carry out daily activities that cover the three learning areas already mentioned.

  • What is valuable is quality and not quantity, for example, giving a child 10 "accounts" can be exhausting and annoying for him, it is better to assign him two and let him solve them well.

  • The activities must be stimulating, so we will try to make sure that the topics on which they are going to revolve are of interest to our child.

  • The level of demand must be adapted to the school level of the child, managing a criterion that something very easy for him does not stimulate or lead him to new learning, something very difficult does not help him either, on the contrary, it creates frustration and can block him thinking that he does not understand and internalizing the "I can't". The criterion will always be individual and looking for the achievement.

What activities to do?

Reading

  • Short readings with a complete meaning so that the child can answer questions about them, that is, practice reading comprehension. To do this we can ask: What, how, when, where, what for, why? Adapting them to what is in the text read.

  • Expand the vocabulary by looking up in the dictionary some words that the child does not understand the meaning or explain it to him/her.

  • For the child who does not read yet, the exercise of "reading images" can be very stimulating. Present a picture with many elements and let the child "read" what he/she sees in it, you can invite him/her to do it as a story.

Note: There are many sites on the internet with short readings and reading comprehension activities. Here is a link

Writing

1.- Take two or three words from the text you read and write a new text with a different topic that includes them.

2.- Choose a topic of their interest and write a content about it. Here it is important to value their written production and not to focus on spelling corrections that discourage creativity. Spelling corrections should be worked on as a separate topic at the appropriate time.

3.- An element that helps the child in reading and writing is to value them as an effective way to communicate. Giving them our telephone and having them read a message sent to us and answer it can be a good strategy, or they can write a greeting to their grandmother or ask a friend a question as well. The important thing is to reinforce the idea of the value of reading and writing.

Mathematics

people-316506_640.jpg

1.- The review of basic operations is the strong point at this stage and always respecting the level of our children as well as the volume of activities that we place on them.

2 .- Perform additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions is a good start, then move on to order and solve with decimal places.

3.- To stimulate logical mathematical thinking is good to create a dynamic where you orally pose some problems and he determines what is the operation to be performed. Here the important thing is not that he gives us a result but that he understands the logical procedure to follow.

These are some activities that are appropriate to do with our children to refresh their knowledge before formally entering the new school year.

I hope you find them helpful and that you have a successful school year.
