Cerro La Gloria Mine
Today I got up very early, something unusual for a Sunday, but it turns out that the reason was very inspiring, since a friend invited me to visit a very interesting place and at the same time unknown to many in the hot city of La Fría, it is from the Cerro la Gloria Mine, a natural jewel that hides a lot of mysticism, great stories and exotic landscapes. In the first place, to locate ourselves geographically, I must tell you that we are in the Venezuelan Andes, specifically in the foothills located in the north of the Táchira state, a few kilometers from the border with Colombia, in a city with high temperatures, a lot of commercial movement and, therefore, therefore with great dynamism, which makes it one of the most important in the entire region.

Mina Cerro La Gloria
Hoy me levante muy temprano, cosa inusual para un domingo, pero resulta que el motivo era muy inspirador, ya que un amigo me invito a recorrer un sitio muy interesante y al mismo tiempo desconocido para muchos en la calurosa ciudad de la Fría, se trata de la Mina Cerro la Gloria, una joya natural que esconde mucho misticismo, grandes historias y exóticos paisajes. En primer lugar, para ubicarnos geográficamente debo decirles que nos encontramos en los andes venezolanos, específicamente en el piedemonte ubicado al norte del estado Táchira, a unos pocos kilómetros de la frontera con Colombia, en una ciudad de altas temperaturas, mucho movimiento comercial y por lo tanto con un gran dinamismo, lo cual la convierte en una de las mas importantes de toda la región.
Cerro La Gloria is the main geographical feature of this entire area, it includes a good part of the city of La Fría and specifically covers the sectors known as: Barrio Las Américas, Barrio Sucre and Barrio Bolívar, it is considered the main vegetal lung of all this area, since it has extensive green areas that provide oxygen and clean air to the entire city, but at the same time it also constitutes one of the most important economic engines, since multiple raw materials are extracted from it, such as: sand, clay, stones and even gold.
El Cerro La Gloria es el principal accidente geográfico de toda esta área, comprende buena parte de la ciudad de La Fría y abarca específicamente los sectores conocidos como: Barrio Las Américas, Barrio Sucre y Barrio Bolívar, se considera el principal pulmón vegetal de toda esta área, pues cuenta con extensas áreas verdes que proporciona oxigeno y aire limpio a toda la ciudad, pero al mismo tiempo también constituye uno de los motores económicos mas importantes, ya que de el se extraen múltiples materias primas, tales como: arena, arcilla, piedras he incluso oro.
With approximately 300 meters at its highest point, Cerro La Gloria is a very extensive space, where streams, cliffs, and jungle landscape are predominant, but inside it also hides many dangers, since there are numerous species of snakes , spiders and other deadly animals that make this their perfect habitat, for this reason and because it is a place that is still underdeveloped, excursions and walks into its interior are very reckless and only the locals dare to undertake that route.
Con aproximadamente 300 metros en su punto mas alto el Cerro La Gloria es un espacio muy extenso, en donde los riachuelos, riscos, y paisaje selváticos son los predominantes, pero en su interior también esconde muchos peligros, ya que son numerosas las especies de serpientes, arañas y otros animales letales que hacen de este su habitad perfecto, por esta razón y por ser un lugar aun poco desarrollado es que las excursiones y paseos hacia su interior son bien temerarias y solo los lugareños se atreven a emprender esa ruta.
But fortunately there is another easier and less risky way to get to know and enter this magnificent place, it is about visiting the mine that is located there, we made our entrance through the Las Américas neighborhood, we crossed a small pipe and immediately we found ourselves in a time within this productive space. There we begin to see the machines, the shovels, carts and earth strainers, as well as a series of mounds of earth of different texture and color, mine down in the distance we see people in search of gold, while towards the mountain is in full activity the extraction of sand.
Pero afortunadamente existe otra forma más fácil y menos riesgosa de conocer y adentrarse a este magnifico lugar, se trata de visitar la mina que allí se encuentra, hicimos nuestra entrada por el Barrio Las Américas, cruzamos un pequeño caño y de inmediato nos encontramos de una vez dentro de este espacio productivo. Allí comenzamos a ver las maquinas, las palas, carretas y coladores de tierra, así como una serie de montículos de tierra de diferente textura y color, mina a bajo a lo lejos divisamos a personas en búsqueda de oro, mientras que hacia la montaña se encuentra en plena actividad la extracción de arena.
The first thing that one can feel when stepping on that place is its greatness, an energy that makes us feel very small, then you can appreciate how different the space of the mine is in relation to its surroundings, since it is a place of extraction to the pit mud, stones and sand abound in the open and everywhere in the work site, while on the margins of that great corridor what can be seen is a dense nature that hides some ravine and more than one house that adventurer stands on the fringes of clearly very unstable ground.
Lo primero que uno puede sentir al pisar ese lugar es su grandeza, una energía que nos hace sentir muy pequeños, luego se puede apreciar lo diferente del espacio de la mina con relación a su entorno, pues se trata de un lugar de extracción a cielo abierto y por todo en el sitio de trabajo el lodo, las piedras y la arena abundan en gran medida, mientras que los márgenes de ese gran corredor lo que se aprecia es una tupida naturaleza que esconde alguna quebrada y más de alguna casa que de forma aventurera se levanta a los márgenes de u terreno claramente muy inestable.
Walking around here is quite a challenge, you have to know where to step, because any mistake can end up burying us in sand that seems to be shifting, inside this great corridor only a few trees remain standing, while the irregularity of the path is something impressive, at first glance it can be seen that it is a very active mine, since it is normal to hear the continuous landslides that give one goosebumps, since this is a very thunderous, deep and terrifying sound, since it gives the impression that one was walled up with the sediments of earth, branches and stones that fall from the top of the mountain. Another thing that is very impressive is to take into account that everything we are stepping on at some point was on or inside the hill, that is, little by little the hand of man and the effects of nature make this place manifest constant physical transformations that allow every day redesign the entire landscape.
Caminar por acá es todo un reto, hay que saber donde pisar, porque cualquier error puede acabar enterrándonos en una arena que pareciera ser movediza, dentro de este gran corredor solo alguno que otro árbol se mantiene en pie, mientras que lo irregular del camino es algo impresionante, a simple vista se aprecia que es una mina muy activa, pues es normal escuchar los continuos deslizamientos de tierra que le colocan a uno la piel de gallina, ya que este es un sonido muy estruendoso, profundo y aterrador, ya que da la impresión de que uno quedara tapiado con los sedimentos de tierra, ramas y piedras que caen desde lo alto de la montaña. Otra cosa que impresiona mucho es tener en cuenta que todo lo que estamos pisando en algún momento estuvo sobre o dentro del cerro, es decir poco a poco la mano del hombre y los efectos de la naturaleza hacen que este lugar manifieste constantes trasformaciones físicas que permiten cada día rediseñar todo el paisaje.
My friend Yorgen tells me that he is very impressed that this image that we had before our eyes today of the mine is very different from the one he saw when he was there for the last time 6 months ago and it will surely be something very different which one we return to make this trip in the future, but despite this drastic and at the same time peculiar quality, I must admit that this site is simply spectacular, a place that has a lot of potential for tourism and that in the future should be thought of being developed more widely. fund, since for example with the creation of a community project in these areas it would serve to achieve the sustainability of many families.
Mi amigo Yorgen me cuenta que a le impresiona mucho que esta imagen que tuvimos hoy frente a nuestros ojos de la mina es muy diferente a la que el vio cuando estuvo allí por ultima vez hace 6 meses y de seguro será algo muy distingo cual volvamos a realizar este viaje en el futuro, pero a pesar de esta cualidad tan drástica y al mismo tiempo peculiar debo admitir que este sitio es sencillamente espectacular, un lugar que tiene mucho potencial para el turismo y que en un futuro debería pensarse en ser desarrollado más a fondo, ya que por ejemplo con la creación de un proyecto comunitario en esta áreas serviría para lograr la sustentabilidad de muchas familias.
On the other hand, I realized that it is an ideal place for bird watching, where the American Vulture, with its typical black plumage, penetrating gaze and very peculiar growl, is the undisputed king in the sky of the mine, usually perches on the cliffs and from there monitor everything around them, I must admit that their presence is very intimidating, since it gives the impression that at any moment they are going to launch an attack on us, but the truth is that despite the constant questioning What they do about this species seems to be that everyone respects their space, the coexistence between humans and vultures in this place can be carried out with enough peace.
Por otro lado me di cuenta que es un sitio ideal para el avistamiento de aves, en donde el Buitre Americano, con su típico plumaje negro, mirada penetrante y gruñido muy peculiar es el rey indiscutible en el cielo de la mina, suele posarse sobre los riscos y desde allí vigilar todo a su alrededor, debo admitir que su presencia es muy intimidante, ya que da la impresión de que en cualquier momento van a lanzarse sobre nosotros al ataque, pero la verdad es que a pesar de los cuestionamientos que constantemente se hacen sobre esta especie pareciera ser que cada quien respeta su espacio la convivencia entre humanos y buitres en este lugar se puede llevar con bastante paz.
The sun heats up strongly and only the shadow of the mountain is our protector, but this did not stop us and we continued walking to get a closer look at this hill and realize that what you can see from the city is not the real wall of this, but a series of cliffs of different shades that are usually formed by clay and stone, these are broad-based geological formations that culminate in sharp points, but when they are undermined by mining extraction and erosion, they usually give the impression of that at any moment they would become part of the ground.
El sol calienta con fuerza y solo la sombra de la montaña es nuestra protectora, pero esto no nos detuvo y seguimos caminando para lograr mirar este cerro de cerca y darme cuenta de que lo que se logra apreciar desde la ciudad no es la verdadera pared de este, sino una serie de riscos de diversas tonalidades que suelen estar formados por arcilla y piedra, estas son unas formaciones geológicas de base ancha que culminan en afiladas puntas, pero que al ser socavadas por la extracción minera y la erosión suelen dar la impresión de que en cualquier momento pasaran a ser parte del suelo.
The experience of this visit was extraordinary, we spent a couple of hours discovering and touring the whole place, I saw many stones, large cracks, paths, landslides, cliffs, mountains and a lot of nature, this is a place where one manages to be watered by many good energies, where the pure air refreshes the lungs and where time seems to fly by, but also despite being an active mine, it is a space where serenity is very present and where pleasant company is highly valued, since Thanks to my friend Yorgen I was able to live this experience to the fullest, between laughs, conversations, anecdotes and photos I take with me a nice memory of the emblematic Cerro La Gloria.
La experiencia de esta visita fue extraordinaria, pasamos un par de horas descubriendo y recorriendo todo el lugar, vi muchas piedras, grandes grietas, caminos, deslizamientos, riscos, montaña y mucha naturaleza, este es un lugar en donde uno logra regarse de muchas buenas energías, en donde el aire puro refresca los pulmones y en donde el tiempo pareciera pasar volando, pero también a pesar de ser una mina activa es un espacio en donde la serenidad esta muy presente y en donde una grata compañía es muy valorada, ya que gracias a mi amigo Yorgen pude vivir esta experiencia al máximo, entre risas, conversaciones, anécdotas y fotos me llevo un lindo recuerdo del emblemático Cerro La Gloria.
