The Great Portland Maine Adventure of 2021

Portland Maine is the Furthest EAST city in the united states. The further east you go UP the coast the more Maine'ers call "down east". This refers to the wind used to blow sailboats down-stream, up the coast. So, in Maine lingo, as you go north east up the coast, you call it DOWN EAST.
Our first air bnb was in portland maine near downtown.

We took a ferry to Peaks Island, which is a large island in the Gulf of Maine.

The ferry was pretty fast, and is frequented by local Portland residents, not just tourists because it is so beautiful there.

We rented a golf cart, and cruised around the island for five hours.

Many pixels were used in the rendering of this photo lol. All of the rocks were super smooth.

People live on Peaks Island, mostly wealthy folks looking for a second home but there are also affordable homes there. The cheaper homes no one wants because most of the people who want to acquire property on Peaks want a recently built mansion instead of an old farmhouse from the 1700's.

There are remnants of an old military fort called Battery Steele https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_Steele which was used in world war 2 to hunt down Submarines, but was never successful at ever finding a single submarine.

Traversing a treacherous footpath required to visit the remains.

Rumor has it, once a year local artists host a "secret art show" at battery steele, where they bring generators and light up the rooms and exhibit gallery artwork like performances, sculptures, paintings, and installation art.

The island was very beautiful and the cellphone digital camera does not accurately capture the subtle color variations visible to the human eye.

Making our way DOWNEAST to Lubec Maine, we spotted this structure.

We rented a spot at The Inn On The Wharf for under $300 a night. The view from our deck was spectacular, and it was so INSANELY quiet during the day and at night.

The sunset WENT IN one night.

To stop at a Bed and Breakfast in Rockland Maine, the "Art Capitol of Maine". A small town with a contemporary art museum that was sadly in between installing exhibits.

We canoed to the top of that waterfall.

A rooster was kept in the entryway of our air bnb host's house, in our backyard. The rest of his flock was killed by a fox.
