Walking Around Devils Tower, part 1 - Wondrous Wyoming

A couple of weeks ago, my daughters and I took the 1.3 mile trail around Devils Tower in NE Wyoming. Last week, I covered the pictures that I took on the approach to the monument. Today, I share the first part of the pictures I took around it.

As we approached, there were many prayer cloths hanging from the trees around the base.

Many climbers love to scale Devils Tower as an ultimate challenge of their rock climbing skills. (All climbers must register at the site - presumably to make it easier to identify any bodies...) For scale, I've circled the climbers in this picture - then crop it to show you the climbers.

it's still hard to see the two climbers in this picture - but if you view the image at full size, it will be a little easier.

Another set of climbers - circled above - and cropped below.

Below these climbers - on the path, some young (and still skinny) mule deer fawns seem only mildly curious about all the walkers passing them.

The view part way around the monument was quite stunning - looking out over the Belle Fourche River as it winds from the South.

We continued walking around Devils Tower, stopping frequently to take pictures. Each view was new and interesting, the details changing every few feet.

This is one of my favorite shots so far... I love how the trees (mostly Ponderosa Pine) frame Devils Tower so gently.

Looks like I'll be doing three parts on this one, so stay tuned next week for Part 2...
