Hey guys! Today I present to you the last one of my posts about my time in Albania. While I told you in the previous post about a wonderful vacation spot on the coast, today it's about the capital of the Balkan state. With a population of just under 420,000, Tirana is one of Europe's smaller capitals and also ranks rather low in terms of the number of annual tourists. Is there a good reason that the city is mostly ignored by international tourists, or is it an insider tip for fans of city trips? If you want to know my personal opinion, just keep reading.
Hallo Leute! Heute präsentiere ich euch den letzten Teil meiner Berichterstattung über meine Zeit in Albanien. Während ich euch im vorherigen Beitrag von einem traumhaften Urlaubsort an der Küste erzählt habe, geht es heute um die Hauptstadt des Balkanstaates. Tirana zählt mit seinen knapp 420.000 Einwohnern zu den kleineren Hauptstädten Europas und ist auch was die Anzahl der jährlichen Touristen betrifft eher auf den hinteren Rängen zu finden. Wird die Stadt von internationalen Touristen zurecht meist ignoriert, oder handelt es sich um einen Geheimtipp für Fans von City-Trips? Wenn ihr meine persönliche Einschätzung wissen wollt, dann lest einfach weiter.
Cityscape/Stadtbild
The largest city in Albania is centrally located, surrounded by mountains and still only 30km from the Adriatic coast. The center of the city is the huge Skanderbeg Square, which you can see on the cover image. Tirana has no real old town with ancient buildings and winding cobblestone streets. Instead, the most diverse architectural styles meet here, which gives the city a unique flair. But the most striking thing for me were the many, many construction sites. Apparently, there is a real construction boom here, which will definitely change the cityscape in the coming years.
Die größte Stadt Albaniens liegt in zentraler Lage, umgeben von Bergen und trotzdem nur 30km von der Adriaküste entfernt. Das Zentrum der Stadt bildet der riesige Skanderbeg-Platz, den ihr auf dem Titelbild sehen könnt. Tirana hat keine wirkliche Altstadt mit antiken Gebäuden und verwinkelten, kopfsteingepflasterten Gassen. Stattdessen treffen hier die unterschiedlichsten Baustile aufeinander, was der Stadt wiederum ein einzigartiges Flair verleiht. Am auffälligsten waren aber für mich die vielen, vielen Baustellen. Anscheinend herrscht hier ein regelrechter Bau-Boom, der das Stadtbild in den kommenden Jahren nachhaltig verändern wird.
Infrastructure & Quality of Life/Infrastruktur & Lenbensqualität
Tirana is a very safe city and the center, as well as all sights can be easily explored on foot. If you have an accommodation in the city center, you do not have to rely on the chaotic city bus system. By the way, there is no subway. For longer distances, it is recommended to take a taxi. I was very surprised by how modern, clean and partly even hip and fancy the city center presented itself. You can literally feel that the city is in the process of modernization. Particularly popular among young adults is the Blloku district.
Tirana ist eine sehr sichere Stadt und das Zentrum, sowie alle Sehenswürdigkeiten lassen sich problemlos zu Fuß erkunden. Hat man eine Unterkunft im Stadtzentrum, so ist man nicht auf das chaotische Stadtbus-System angewiesen. U-Bahn gibt es übrigens keine. Bei weiteren Distanzen empfiehlt es sich, ein Taxi zu nehmen. Ich war sehr überrascht davon, wie modern, sauber und teilweise sogar hipp und fancy sich das Stadtzentrum präsentierte. Man spürt förmlich, dass sich die Stadt in einem Modernisierungsprozess befindet. Besonders angesagt bei jungen Erwachsenen ist der Stadtteil Blloku.
Restaurants & Prices/Restaurants & Preise
In addition to numerous opportunities to try out the local cuisine, you can find restaurants of all kinds and price ranges in the streets of Tirana. International fast food chains have also discovered the Balkan metropolis for themselves. Likewise, you will find plenty of opportunities to eat vegan. There is something for every taste and occasion. Unfortunately, I can report very little about the nightlife, because at the time of my visit there was a curfew from 10 pm due to the Covid pandemic. Price-wise, a trip to Tirana is an absolute bargain compared to other European capitals. Here are a few examples of the price level:
Modern Airbnb apartment with balcony in the city center: 261$ for 6 nights.
Private taxi from the airport to the city center: 23$
Burger with fries, salad and coke (shopping mall food court): 4.5$
Fresh strawberry milk shake in a street café: 1.35$
Neben zahlreichen Möglichkeiten, die einheimische Küche auszuprobieren, findet man in den Straßen von Tirana Restaurants aller Art und jeder Preisklasse. Auch internationale Fast-Food-Ketten haben die Balkan-Metropole schon für sich entdeckt. Ebenso findet man jede Menge Möglichkeiten, vegan zu essen. Hier ist wirklich für jeden Geschmack und Anlass etwas dabei. Leider sehr wenig kann ich über das Nachleben berichten, da es zur Zeit meines Besuchs aufgrund der Covid-Pandemie eine Ausgangssperre ab 22 Uhr gab. Preislich ist eine Reise nach Tirana im Vergleich mit anderen europäischen Hauptstädten ein absolutes Schnäppchen. Hier ein paar Beispiele für das Preisniveau:
Moderne Airbnb-Wohnung mit Balkon im Stadtzentrum: 231€ für 6 Nächte
Privates Taxi vom Flughafen ins Stadtzentrum: ca. 20€
Burger mit Pommes, Salat und Cola (Shopping Mall Food Court): ca. 4€
Frische Erdbeermilch im Straßencafé: ca. 1,20€
Modern Architecture/Moderne Architektur
As already mentioned, you can find a lot of construction projects in Tirana at the moment. Some of them are already finished and can impress with their creative architecture. If you like photographing modern buildings, like I do, you will surely have a lot of fun in the Albanian capital. Recommended in this category are for example the National Stadium, the Plaza Hotel or the Toptani shopping mall.
Wie bereits erwähnt, findet man zur Zeit sehr viele Bauprojekte in Tirana. Einige davon sind bereits fertiggestellt und können mit ihrer kreativen Architektur durchaus beeindrucken. Falls ihr, so wie ich, gerne moderne Bauwerke fotografiert, werdet ihr in der albanischen Hauptstadt sicher sehr viel Freude haben. Empfehlenswert in dieser Kategorie sind zum Beispiel das Nationalstadion, das Hotel Plaza oder das Toptani-Shoppingcenter.
Culture & Leisure/Kultur & Freizeit
The Toptani Mall also impressed me indoors. On a total of eight floors you can find a lot of stores, restaurants, cafes and fantastic views of the city. Another highlight of Tirana is the underground BunkArt Museum. There is also no shortage of leisure activities. If you like hiking, you will find mountains over 1,000m high in the surrounding area. You prefer to lie on the beach and swim in the sea? The Albanian Adriatic coast can also be reached very quickly by a thirty-minute drive.
Die Toptani-Mall hat mich aber auch innen überzeugt. Auf insgesamt acht Stockwerken findet man hier jede Menge Shops, Restaurants, Cafes und traumhafte Aussichten auf die Stadt. Ein weiteres Highlight Tiranas ist das unterirdische BunkArt-Museum. Auch sonst mangelt es nicht an Möglichkeiten zur Freizeitgestaltung. Wer gerne wandert, findet in der Umgebung über 1.000m hohe Berge. Ihr möchtet lieber am Strand liegen und im Meer schwimmen? Auch die albanische Adriaküste ist durch eine dreißigminütige Autofahrt sehr schnell erreichbar.
Conclusion/Fazit
For me personally, Tirana was definitely worth the trip. At no time did I feel unsafe or uncomfortable - on the contrary, I definitely would have enjoyed staying longer. Of course, there is much more to see and experience in the major European cities - that has to be said quite clearly. However, if you have already visited Paris, London, etc. and you're looking for an interesting capital city away from mass tourism, you should definitely give Tirana a chance.
Für mich persönlich war Tirana auf jeden Fall eine Reise wert. Ich fühlte mich zu keiner Zeit unsicher oder unwohl - ganz im Gegenteil, ich hätte es definitiv noch länger ausgehalten. Natürlich gibt es in den großen europäischen Metropolen sehr viel mehr zu sehen und zu erleben - das muss ganz klar gesagt werden. Wer jedoch Paris, London und co. schon besucht hat und auf der Suche nach einer interessanten Hauptstadt, abseits des Massentourismus ist, der sollte Tirana definitiv eine Chance geben.
