Merry Christmas, friends! I hope you enjoy the festive season. I always use the last few days of the year for self-reflection and setting new goals. But today's post is all about the second last stop on my Baja California road trip. The capital of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur has a lot to offer and impresses with its relaxed charm. Just read on if you want to find out more.
Frohe Weihnachten, Freunde! Ich hoffe, ihr genießt die Feiertage. Ich nutze die letzten Tage des Jahres immer zur Selbstreflexion und zum Setzen neuer Ziele. Doch im heutigen Beitrag geht es erstmal um die vorletzte Station meines Baja California Roadtrips. Die Hauptstadt des mexikanischen Bundesstaates Baja California Sur hat einiges zu bieten und überzeugt mit ihrem entspannten Charme. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr näheres erfahren wollt.
Our first walk through the city after moving into our accommodation took us to La Paz's main square, which is also home to the city's largest cathedral and a beautifully designed white kiosk surrounded by a park called Jardin Velasco. We also discovered the first of two La Paz letterings in this square. By the way: if the name of the city sounds familiar to you, it's probably because you've already heard of the Bolivian metropolis of the same name.
Unser erster Stadtspaziergang nach dem Bezug unseres Apartments führte uns zum Hauptplatz von La Paz, auf dem sich auch die größte Kathedrale der Stadt befindet, sowie ein schön gestalteter weißer Kiosk, der von einem Park mit dem Namen Jardin Velasco umgeben ist. Auch den ersten von zwei La Paz-Schriftzügen entdeckten wir auf diesem Platz. Übrigens: Falls euch der Name der Stadt bekannt vorkommt, dann liegt das eventuell daran, dass ihr bereits von der gleichnamigen Metropole in Bolivien gehört habt.
Right next door we found a typical Mexican street market with many stalls selling a wide variety of goods. The only thing we missed was an area with street food. Just behind the Jardin Velasco is the Biblioteca de la Historia de las Californias and the Museo del Arte. The street lamps behind it, artfully arranged in three rows, are a particularly popular photo spot for tourists. However, the number of tourists was not very large, which didn't bother us and contributed to the cosy atmosphere of the city.
Gleich nebenan fanden wir einen typisch mexikanischen Straßenmarkt mit vielen Ständen, die die unterschiedlichsten Waren anboten. Nur einen Bereich mit Streetfood vermissten wir. Gleich hinter dem Jardin Velasco befindet sich die Biblioteca de la Historia de las Californias sowie das Museo del Arte. Die kunstvoll in drei Reihen angeordneten Straßenlaternen dahinter bilden einen sehr beliebten Fotospot für Touristen. Die Anzahl der Touristen war aber überschaubar, was uns jedoch nicht störte und zur gemütlichen Stimmung der Stadt beitrug.
After a delicious breakfast, we strolled on to the beach promenade and found the second, larger La Paz sign, another kiosk and numerous sculptures. There was also no shortage of Christmas decorations. But can you really get into the Christmas mood in a place like this? Not for me personally. But I usually prefer palm trees over Christmas trees anyway and there are plenty of them along the promenade, also known as the Malecón.
Nach einem leckeren Frühstück spazierten wir weiter zur Strandpromenade und fanden den zweiten, größeren La Paz-Schriftzug, einen weiteren Kiosk, sowie zahlreiche Skulpturen. Auch an weihnachtlicher Dekoration mangelte es nicht. Doch kann an so einem Ort überhaupt wirkliche Weihnachtsstimmung aufkommen? Bei mir persönlich nicht. Doch Palmen sind mir meistens ohnehin lieber als Weihnachtsbäume und davon gibt es jede Menge entlang der Promenade, auch Malecón genannt.
We also found the many paintings on the facades of the houses and the sunsets on the beach promenade, from which our accommodation was fortunately only a five-minute walk away, particularly beautiful. There is no shortage of delicious restaurants and the prices are rather moderate for the region and definitely a lot cheaper than in the tourist hotspot of Cabo San Lucas.
Besonders schön fanden wir auch die vielen Malereien auf den Hausfassaden sowie die Sonnenuntergänge an der Strandpromenade, von der sich unsere Unterkunft zum Glück nur einen fünfminütigen Spaziergang entfernt befand. An leckeren Restaurants mangelt es nicht und auch die Preise sind für die Region eher moderat und definitiv um einiges günstiger als in der Touristen-Hochburg Cabo San Lucas.
Of course, beach lovers also get their money's worth in La Paz. The well-kept El Coromuel beach is just a five-minute drive from the city centre. We spent an afternoon here and were surprised by the incredibly clear and clean water. While swimming, we enjoyed the wonderful view of the hills behind the beach with their hundreds of cacti. At the beach bar, we treated ourselves to a delicious michelada with fresh shrimps and chips with jicama, cucumber and chamoi. It was just a marvellous afternoon.
Natürlich kommen auch Strandliebhaber in La Paz auf ihre Kosten. Nur eine fünfminütige Autofahrt vom Stadtzentrum entfernt liegt der gepflegte Strand El Coromuel. Hier verbrachten wir einen Nachmittag und waren überrascht vom unglaublich klaren und sauberen Wasser. Beim Baden genossen wir den wundervollen Blick auf die Hügel hinter dem Strand mit ihren hunderten Kakteen. An der Strandbar genehmigten wir einen leckeren Michelada mit frischen Garnelen sowie Chips mit Jicama, Gurken und Chamoi. Es war ein herrlicher Nachmittag.
For me personally, La Paz offered the ideal mix of a quiet and lively atmosphere. Well attended, but not overcrowded, I would say. The city is really well suited for a family or couple's holiday and can convince with a reasonable price level for Baja California, as well as with absolute dream beaches in the surrounding area. From there, we continued our journey south towards Los Cabos. In the next post, I will tell you about the last stop on our road trip.
Für mich persönlich bot La Paz den idealen Mix aus ruhiger und quirliger Atmosphäre. Gut besucht, aber nicht überlaufen, würde ich sagen. Die Stadt eignet sich wirklich gut für einen Familien- oder Pärchen-Urlaub und kann mit einem für Baja California wirklich günstigen Preisniveau, sowie mit absoluten Traumstränden in der Umgebung überzeugen. Für uns ging es im Anschluss weiter nach Süden in Richtung Los Cabos. Im nächsten Beitrag werde ich euch vom letzten Stop unseres Roadtrips berichten.
