Nelson locates at the top of NZ's South Island and is known as the sunniest city in the country. It's a perfect destination for sunseekers and also a great area as a Working Holiday Holder for those who look for year round work. If you plan travel around the South of NZ, this stunning landscape must be on your list.
Nelson was my first stop in the South of NZ and I was lucky to live here for a while during the 2018 winter season. So today I'm glad to share with you my discoveries regarding this fantastic scenry
Rainbown Ski Area- Fun Winter Wonderland
It is about 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Nelson and you will take a shuttle from the car park to the top of the mountain if you are not confident to drive on slippery roads. 😉
For Snowboarders, yea you won't be disappointed to be here in the winter season. With over 1760 metres of slopes, Rainbow captures regular winter snow and a wonderful winter playground. There is a good little cafe up there and A nice range of gear to hire - all you need to ski 🙂
What do think the Rock looks like? An apple? Here is called Nelson Split Apple Rock/ Toka Ngawhā,laying between Kaiteriteri and Marahau and a 1 hour drive from Nelson town. This is the region's famous attraction and a must-see when cruising the coast of Albel Tasman National Park.
Nelson Lakes National Park
Just wow !!! It's simply the most amazing lake I have ever seen in my life. It's crystal clear waterand surrounded by a picturesque mountain. The lake has big ells, many cute ducks, black swans happily swimming around. We did not spend much time there (what a pity) and letf earlier than expected due to the weather.
I heard there are some breathtaking trails in the area, like Robert Ridge to Angelus and the loop from Cold Water up to Travers Swingbridge. Let's bookmark those on the list-to-see if you visit the Lake. I will surely do all of them once I have a chance to come back :))
Cable Bay
Another lovely coastal view just 14km away from Nelson Central. There is a spectacular walkway where you can see the stunning views of Tasman Bay.
There are many things to do here such as: kayak around the bay, go dragon-hunting in the forest, snorkel or dive, take a farm tour, mountain biking, etc...
Nelson Saturday Market-Local Highlight
Nice way to spend a Saturday morning wandering around and exploring what Nelson local offers from fresh produce to local foods or clothes. It opens from 8am - 2pm on Sat and is definitely worth spending the day. Don't miss it if you are in Nelson.
Nelson's Waterfront and Port
I lived in the Custom House which is along Nelson's beautiful waterfront and port. Therefore, I could enjoy the bay view every single day. I ran every morning and the air was so fresh and clean
What a gorgous setting showcasing NZ's beautiful nature !! Upon waking up in the morning, my first views were of the marvelous Nelson's waterfront. Walking out of my hostel up the hill, I witnessed a stunning view of bay.
It's a heaven to live, isn't it?
Cherry Blossoms in Miyazu Gardens
The beautiful residential areas of Nelson were some that I will never forget. Although, I only stayed in Nelson during the winter, I felt as though I enjoyed all 4 seasons. With beautiful blue sky's,stunning cherry blossoms, yellow leaves and snow from my collage of photos above, I will always have great and unforgettable memories.
Nelson is an excellent base for exploring everything pure of New Zealand.
