I visited it 10 years ago, on a vacation I took with my mom and my best friend. We really wanted to visit the historical sites of the city of Cumana and we had been told that we could not leave the city without first visiting the fortification.
To get to the fortification we had to go to the historic center of Cumana and walk up a steep street until we reached the highest point of the fortification. It is a very lonely place, but very pleasant.
The fortification is located on a hill called "Cerro Pan de Azúcar", where you can see the entire city of Cumana, the Gulf of Cariaco and the Araya Peninsula. It was built between 1,659 and 1,686, to protect the city from pirate raids that occurred at the time.
The site is open to the public from Monday from Tuesday to Sunday, and there are very attentive staff to guide the visit. Its walls are 2 meters thick and you can still see the artillery used at the time.
I tell you that this fortification served as a prison for Presidents José Antonio Páez and José Tadeo Monagas. Finally the castle was declared a historical monument in 1965.

La visita la efectué hace 10 años, en unas vacaciones que hice con mi mamá y mi mejor amiga. Teníamos muchas ganas de visitar los sitios históricos de la ciudad de Cumaná y nos habían dicho que no podíamos abandonar la ciudad, sin antes haber visitado la fortificación.
Para llegar a la fortificación tuvimos que llegar al Casco Histórico de Cumana y subir por una calle empinada hasta dar en su punto más alto con la fortificación. Es un sitio bastante solo, pero muy agradable.
La fortificación se encuentra en una colina llamada “Cerro Pan de Azúcar”, donde se puede apreciar toda la ciudad de Cumaná, el Golfo de Cariaco y la Península de Araya. Fue construida entre los años 1.659 y 1.686, para proteger la ciudad de las incursiones piratas que ocurrían en la época.
El sitio está abierto al público de lunes de martes a domingo, y hay personal muy atento que guían la visita. Sus paredes son de 2 metros de espesos y todavía se ven las artillerías usadas en la época.
Les cuento que esta fortificación sirvió de cárcel a los presidentes José Antonio Páez y José Tadeo Monagas. Finalmente el Castillo fue declarado monumento histórico en 1965.
