TacoCat’s Travels #123 (Japan 6.0): A Valentines' Graduation Getaway! 🛫

Hey Hive!

So if you missed the last post, we recently finished our trip with Sean and my family when we traveled through Tokyo and Osaka in late December! It was tiring traveling and bringing them around to all the popular tourist spots during peak travel period but oh well.

Anyway, after that our next trip was to Finland for our college exchange! But that was actually the first travel series I did which you can check out here! And after that trip, we had one last semester of college to go and then we were done!! So to celebrate, we wanted to take a trip and we had always talked about visiting South Korea since neither of us have ever been and Seany is a big fan of Running Man and other Korean variety shows. But then we saw an offer by Delta Airlines for Tokyo so.. We decided to go to Tokyo instead!

And this next trip was much later in 2019 for Valentines' Day!

12 February 2019. Tuesday.

Our flight was pretty early at 6:30am in the morning, so I'm pretty sure we didn't sleep and just stayed up all night before heading to the airport at 5am. It was also around Chinese New Year so there were cute decorations up at the airport and since it was the year of the pig which is also my Chinese zodiac so..

There was also a cardboard cut-out exhibit from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them since the movie was out around that time I guess?

Anyway, we hung around the airport for a while and probably ate some snacks before it was time to board!

Both of us were kinda tired by that point since it was 7am and we didn't sleep the whole night, so we slept on the plane, to a beautiful sunrise!

But first, it was breakfast time! About 40 minutes after we took off, breakfast was served! I think we had 2 choices of cuisine - a local one, which was stir-fried bee hoon/vermicelli with chicken cutlet:

Or an omelette! Both sets came with a cinnamon roll, some fruit slices and a cup of meiji yogurt. And of course you could ask for a drink and my go-to is always juice (but not orange) or milk.

I was the one who ordered the beehoon since I wanted something more savoury and filling. But after that we pretty much just slept until we arrived in Tokyo, which was probably around 12-1pm.

We had booked an Airbnb somewhere outside the main part of Tokyo in an area called Omorimachi, so we took an express train there and it was surprisingly completely empty! It's probably the most empty train I've ever seen in Japan!

But it was super comfortable with lots of leg room, just like a Shinkansen.

It was quite the journey and we pretty much spent the afternoon just getting to our apartment.

And it was getting cold at 5pm in the evening, so I'm glad I brought this fluffy coat along. And we also bought a nice warm lemon tea drink from the vending machine!

By the time we finally arrived at the apartment it was 5:40pm already, but at least we made it here without much problems. And it was really nice too!

I mean, it was basically like a hotel room. With 2 queen beds, a TV, air-conditioning, mini kitchenette, and bathroom.

It looked pretty nice and comfortable! It didn't have too much walking space once we put our luggage on the floor though, but that's to be expected of Japanese apartments.

The bathroom was split into a shower area and bath tub, like most Japanese houses. It looked really nice and modern though.

There was even a washing machine! Not that we would need it.

After that we got hungry for dinner, so we headed out onto the street in search of food and found our way back to our favourite place - Sukiya!

And of course Sean ordered his favourite okura gyudon:

While I decided to try something different! I actually don't recognise this at all, but it looks like some hybrid yong tau foo gyudon.? It must have been a special seasonal item. I wish I could remember this, but it must have tasted okay.

After that we walked around the neighbourhood and found a McDonalds nearby! Nice! And I was dying to try their petit pancakes and their chocolate pie so dessert time!

I mean the petit pancakes were just basically their hotcakes but smaller, and is also available at night, which is good. But it comes with a side of butter and apricot jam, instead of maple syrup.

The chocolate pie was alright, but it was really flaky. The dark chocolate was nice and melty on the inside though.

Overall, a really good meal and an awesome dessert! It wasn't too sweet and was just enough to not be too much.

But I'm afraid that's gonna be all for this post! Sorry it's so short, but last week's was long since I combined 2 days anyway. And the next day is going to be long since we're going somewhere special! So tune in next week to see where we head to next! Here's a sneak peak:
