A veces las montañas no guardan solamente hermosos caminos, bosques, cascadas escondidas, cumbres y fauna escurridiza, existen también por sus senderos historias enigmáticas protagonizadas por personajes que parecen de ficción pero fueron reales, muy reales, este es el caso del Dr. Knoche y su mausoleo.
Before visiting this place, I had little information about this German doctor who arrived in Venezuela in the mid-19th century and who mummified bodies with an extraordinary formula that he invented and of which no trace remained.
Antes de visitar este lugar tenía poca información de este médico alemán que llegó a Venezuela a mediados del siglo XIX y que momificaba cuerpos con una extraordinaria fórmula que él inventó y de la cual no quedó rastro.
I was drawn to this route because it combines mystery and nature, since the house, laboratory and mausoleum of Dr. Knoche are within the El Ávila or Waraira Repano National Park, a mountain shared by the city of Caracas and the states of La Guaira and Miranda.
Me sentí atraída por esta ruta porque combina misterio y naturaleza, ya que la casa, el laboratorio y el mausoleo del Dr. Knoche quedan dentro del Parque Nacional El Ávila o Waraira Repano, montaña que comparten la ciudad de Caracas y los estados La Guaira y Miranda.
I asked a friend if she wanted to go and we went there one Sunday with a hiking group. We met in the Cotiza area, in Caracas, and took the jeeps that transported us from there to San José de Galipán, La Guaira state, where the path that takes you to the domains of Dr. Knoche is located.

More or less in half an hour we arrived, we stayed for a while in the Bolívar square of the town while some of the group went to buy trinkets and drinks at a nearby kiosk and then we began the route by getting into a narrow path that is nearby.
Más o menos en media hora llegamos, nos quedamos un rato en la Plaza Bolívar del pueblo mientras algunas personas del grupo fueron a comprar chucherías y bebidas en un kiosko cercano y luego comenzamos la ruta metiéndonos por un estrecho sendero que queda allí cerca.
The climb was not very strong and as we were in thick vegetation it wasn't hot.

About half an hour later we arrived at the area called Plan de Alpargata where a guide from the Knoche Foundation was waiting for us to tell us about the history of this famous German doctor.
Una media hora después llegamos al sector llamado Plan de Alpargata donde nos esperaba un guía de la Fundación Knoche para hablarnos de la historia de este famoso médico alemán.
He told us that Gottfried Knoche (1813-1901), a native of Germany, was a surgeon who arrived in Venezuela at the age of 32, specifically to La Guaira, a coastal and mountain town, some say that to attend his compatriots who lived there and others speculate that perhaps he was a political exile who took refuge in these South American lands.
Él nos contó que Gottfried Knoche (1813-1901) oriundo de Alemania, era un médico cirujano que llegó a Venezuela a los 32 años, específicamente a La Guaira, población de costa y montaña, unos dicen que para atender a sus compatriotas que vivían allí y otros especulan que quizás era un exiliado político que se refugió en estas tierras suramericanas.
He arrived alone in the country but later brought his wife and children and began working at the La Guaira Military Hospital.
Llegó solo al país pero luego trajo a su esposa e hijos y comenzó a trabajar en el Hospital Militar de La Guaira.
It is said that he was a very good person and that he cared for low-income people for free, but then the vision about him changed when he began to do some strange experiments in the mountains.
Se dice que era muy buena persona y que atendía gratuitamente a la gente de bajos recursos pero que luego la visión sobre él cambió cuando comenzó a hacer unos extraños experimentos en la montaña.
It turns out that Dr. Knoche was exploring the area and got to know Galipán, a small town in the mountains inhabited by peasants where flowers were also planted and decided to buy a small farm in the Palmar del Picacho de Galipán sector, which he named Buena Vista. At first he didn't live there, he went on weekends, but they say that since his wife could not bear the heat and humidity of La Guaira, they later moved there. There he also built his laboratory, where he began to work on the mummification of corpses.
Resulta que el Dr. Knoche exploraba la zona y conoció Galipán, un pueblito en la montaña habitado por campesinos donde también se sembraban flores y decidió comprar una pequeña hacienda en el sector Palmar del Picacho de Galipán, a la que le puso de nombre Buena Vista. Al principio no vivía ahí, iba los fines de semana, pero cuentan que como su esposa no aguantaba el calor y la humedad de La Guaira, se mudaron luego para allá. Allí edificó también su laboratorio, donde comenzó a trabajar en la momificación de cadáveres.
At that time, between 1859 and 1863 there was an armed conflict in Venezuela, "the federal war" or "long war" that caused the death of about 100,000 people and Dr. Knoche who worked at the Military Hospital of La Guaira took advantage of the unclaimed bodies to start testing the embalming or mummifying formula he had been working on.

I must say that when the Knoche Foundation guide started the story about the doctor, my camera started to fail, the images were blurry, so I had to take the other photos of the tour with my cell phone camera, of less quality. At the time I didn't pay attention to the matter, but later something happened that made me feel like this was a place with a somewhat heavy vibe...

As I mentioned before, the kind image that people had of Dr. Knoche changed when he began to send some of the dead on the back of donkeys or horses to Hacienda Buena Vista, his mountain home, causing many to fear him and call him "The vampire of Galipán".
Como mencioné antes, la imagen bondadosa que la gente tenía del Dr. Knoche cambió cuando él empezó a enviar a lomo de burros o caballos algunos muertos para la Hacienda Buena Vista, su casa de la montaña, haciendo que muchos le temieran y lo empezaran a llamar “el vampiro de Galipán”.
Surely, as a scientist, he didn't care about people's comments and was focused on experimenting with the novel formula he invented to preserve bodies without removing organs, which was a success and certainly made him feel excited because it surpassed the most famous mummifying technique: that of the Egyptians.

It isn't known how many bodies he mummified, but those he left in his mausoleum are known, including himself and his family.

Returning to our route, about ten minutes before we reached the mausoleum, something happened that marked the rest of the excursion. I was walking along the path a few meters in front of my friend Zoraibeth and suddenly I heard several people from the group calling me, I turned back and saw Zoraibeth on the ground, “I slipped and bent my ankle”, she tells me, "I heard a crack"… that didn't sound good.

Fortunately there was a paramedic in the group and several men carried her to the mausoleum.

There she sat down and they splinted her ankle with some sticks that they collected around there and some handkerchiefs that they later replaced with plastic tape that someone had. She said it didn't hurt much but that she preferred not to step on the ground.

The weather got cloudy while we were visiting the mausoleum, which made everything look more mysterious.

At the entrance to this place there is a replica of the mummy of José Pérez, a soldier that nobody claimed and that Dr. Knoche placed as guardian there along with a also mummified dog.

Unfortunately all the mummies that were there disappeared when the Hacienda Buena Vista was looted a few years after the death of the doctor and thus these remains couldn't be studied to try to decipher the secret formula.

The people who rested there apart from the doctor himself are: Anna Knoche Muller (her daughter), Heinrich Muller (her son-in-law, Anna's husband), Wilhelm Knoche (her brother), Josephine Weissmann (nurse) and Amalie Weissmann (nurse), who was in charge of injecting the formula to Knoche when he died at age 88 in 1901.

Amalie continued to live on the farm after the death of the doctor and died in 1926, he also left her a dose to be mummified when she died. The legend of Dr. Knoche also inspired a song, work of the famous Venezuelan rocker Paul Gillman, who in 1990 released his album El Regreso del Guerrero (The Return of the Warrior), featuring the heavy metal piece Doctor Knoche that I share with you below. This singer was also going to star in a movie about the life of this doctor, although there is a trailer, the project has not yet materialized.
La leyenda del Dr. Knoche inspiró también una canción, obra del famoso rockero venezolano Paul Gillman, que en 1990 lanzó su álbum El Regreso del Guerrero, donde está la pieza heavy metal Doctor Knoche que les comparto a continuación. Continuing with our tour, we went up to the terrace of the mausoleum, we couldn't see much of the landscape since a mist surrounded us. From there they told us that you can see the sea and the towns of La Guaira and Maiquetía.

My friend Zoraibeth with her injured ankle couldn't see these ruins, she stayed in the mausoleum waiting for us to return. Once there, the men of the group improvised a stretcher with two large sticks to which they placed some blouses, so my friend sat there and they carried her all the way back. The paramedic had called the forest firefighters, who were going to wait for us downstairs to take her to a health center.
Mi amiga Zoraibeth con su tobillo lesionado no pudo conocer estas ruinas, se quedó en el mausoleo esperando que volviéramos. Una vez allí los chicos del grupo improvisaron una camilla con dos palos grandes a los que les colocaron unas blusas, así mi amiga se sentó allí y ellos la cargaron durante todo el camino de regreso. El paramédico había llamado a los bomberos forestales, quienes nos iban a esperar abajo para trasladarla a un centro de salud.
Although this accident was terrible, the return was full of good vibes, everyone was singing, joking and saying that it was a procession and that there they carried the saint hahaha, while Zoraibeth was also dying of laughter.

As we descended from the mountain, the sky cleared and we had a beautiful view of the sea.
Al ir descendiendo de la montaña el cielo se fue despejando y pudimos tener una bella vista del mar.
Almost arriving back in the town of San José de Galipán, the forest firefighters were there with a stretcher to transfer my friend to a car that would take us to Caracas.
Ya casi llegando de vuelta al pueblo de San José de Galipán, la gente de los bomberos forestales estaba ahí con una camilla para trasladar a mi amiga a un carro que nos llevaría a Caracas.
Fortunately, Zoraibeth had medical insurance and we went straight to a clinic, there they removed her the splint, wow! Her ankle was super swollen and they gave her the diagnosis: tibia and fibula fracture, a few days later they did surgery and everything went well.
Afortunadamente Zoraibeth tenía seguro médico y fuimos directo a una clínica, allí le quitaron el entablillado, ¡uao! su tobillo estaba súper hinchado y le dieron el diagnóstico: fractura de tibia y peroné, unos días después la operaron y todo salió bien.
Without a doubt this was an unforgettable excursion.
Sin duda esta fue una excursión inolvidable.
