Some time ago I visited the Dr. Leslie Pantin Zoo, located in the state of Aragua, Venezuela. Contrary to the image that has been had in recent years about zoos, this beautiful place reminds us of the true purpose of these centers: the care and protection of endangered species. This is not limited only to the fauna, since they also protect the flora, something you notice as soon as you see the majestic saman tree covered with malangas (colocasia esculenta) that you find when you arrive.
Hace un tiempo visité el zoológico Dr. Leslie Pantin, ubicado en el estado Aragua, Venezuela. Contrario a la imagen que se ha tenido en los últimos años sobre los zoológicos, este hermoso lugar nos recuerda el verdadero propósito de estos centros: el cuidado y protección de especies bajo amenaza. Esto sin limitarse solamente a la fauna, ya que también protegen la flora, cosa que notas apenas ves el majestuoso samán cubierto con malangas (colocasia esculenta) que te encuentras al llegar.
It is named in honor of Veterinarian Leslie Pantin, who started this project in 1963 with his wife. Little by little it grew and over the years they dedicated themselves to educate the population through lectures and, of course, to the care of the fauna and flora. After the death of the founders, their descendants dedicated themselves to continue this valuable legacy.
Recibe su nombre en honor al Médico Veterinario Leslie Pantin, quien empezó este proyecto en 1963 junto a su esposa. Poco a poco fue creciendo y con el paso de los años se dedicaron a educar a la población a través de charlas y, por supuesto, al cuidado de la fauna y flora. Después del fallecimiento de los fundadores, sus hijos se dedicaron a continuar con este valioso legado.
In Aragua there had not been a zoo for many years, much less one that focused on the welfare of the animal and not on the spectacle. That is why I emphasize that this refuge represents a vindication of traditional zoos, at least in Venezuela, opening a space for the conservation of biodiversity acting as genetic reservoirs, since they have pairs of animals that can reproduce to repopulate natural spaces. Such is the case of the Orinoco caiman.
En Aragua hacía muchos años que no había un zoológico y mucho menos uno que se enfocara en el bienestar del animal y no en el espectáculo. Es por esto que destaco que este refugio representa una reivindicación a los zoológicos tradicionales, al menos en Venezuela, abriendo un espacio a la conservación de la biodiversidad actuando como reservorios genéticos, ya que tienen parejas de animales que pueden reproducir para repoblar espacios naturales. Tal es el caso del caimán del Orinoco.
This information was provided at that time by the current owners of the zoo, who are in charge of guiding visitors during the tour of the place. Educating both young and old, explaining how these animals got there and whether they can be reintegrated into the wild.
Esta información fue proporcionada en aquél momento por los actuales dueños del zoológico, quienes se encargan de guiar a los visitantes durante el recorrido por el lugar. Educando tanto a grandes y pequeños, explicando cómo llegaron esos animales allí y si posteriormente podrán ser reintegrados a su vida silvestre.

Some were rescued from unsuitable environments, as a result of illegal animal trafficking, which can no longer be introduced into their habitat because they would not have the necessary skills to defend themselves, and which in turn represent a danger to local species if they are released in inappropriate areas.
Algunos fueron rescatados de entornos inadecuados, producto del tráfico ilegal de animales, que ya no pueden ser introducidos a su hábitat porque no contarían con las habilidades necesarias para defenderse y que a su vez representan un peligro para especies locales si son liberadas en espacios que no corresponden.
It was an unforgettable experience, if you are in Venezuela do not hesitate to visit it and support this project that is supported by their own means. Es una actividad amena que se puede hacer en familia, les aseguro que todos la disfrutaran, sobre todo aquellos quienes sientan afinidad por la naturaleza y todo lo que habita en ella. Encontrarán desde morrocoyes, guacamayas, paujíes, y guacharacas, hasta picures, cunaguaros, chigüires y dantas.
