Greetings friends and community members. The Castillo de Santo Domingo de Atarés, better known simply as Castillo de Atarés, is an ancient military fortress from Spanish colonial times, built as part of Havana's defense system to protect the city.

Located on a hill in Havana, near the current Avenida del Puerto, it is now a museum whose doors are open to the public since 2019, after being restored as part of the works of the Office of the Historian of Havana.

The fortress has an irregular hexagonal shape, and in its vertexes it also has hexagonal sentry boxes in correspondence to the architectural style of the time in the XVIII century, and it is surrounded by a perimeter moat.

The fortress is accessed by a drawbridge system supported by chains on iron wheels, and is guarded at the entrance by a large precious wooden gate.

Inside, it has a small central parade ground surrounded by several buildings and bomb-proof vaults for the soldiers' lodging and storage of weapons and supplies.

This castle, which owes its name to the then governor of the island of Cuba, son of the Counts of Atarés, has had several functions throughout its history, where in addition to being a military fortress in the Spanish colony (although it was never used in war), it was also the headquarters of the presidential guard in the neocolonial republic, and also the site where numerous executions of opponents of the government were carried out.

Today it is a museum where you can see part of the original infrastructure of the building, as well as exhibitions of works designed by Leonardo Da Vinci related to engineering and fortifications. Among the objects that are part of this collection designed by Da Vinci are looms, horizontal drills, worm screws, cam hammers, among others.

Thus, the Castle of Atares is an ancient structure that remains in our time as a living witness of many historical events and invites the approach to appreciate its wonders and what it has to show and teach. Saludos amigos y miembros de la comunidad. El Castillo de Santo Domingo de Atarés, más conocido simplemente como Castillo de Atarés, es una fortaleza militar antigua del tiempo colonial español, construido como parte del sistema de defensa de La Habana para proteger la ciudad.

Ubicada en una colina en La Habana, cercana a la actual Avenida del Puerto, en la actualidad constituye un museo cuyas puertas están abiertas para el público desde el año 2019, luego de haber sido restaurado como parte de las obras de La Oficina del Historiador de La Habana.

La fortaleza tiene forma hexagonal irregular, y en sus vértices posee garitas también hexagonales en correspondencia al estilo arquitectónico de la época en el siglo XVIII, y se encuentra rodeada por un foso perimetral.

La fortaleza cuenta para su acceso con un sistema de puente levadizo sujetado por cadenas en ruedas de hierro, y está custodiada a la entrada por una gran puerta de madera preciosa.

En su interior posee una pequeña plaza de armas central rodeada por varias construcciones y bóvedas a prueba de las bombas de aquel entonces, para alojamiento de los soldados y almacenamiento de armas y víveres.

Este Castillo que debe su nombre al entonces gobernador de la Isla de Cuba hijo de los Condes de Atarés, ha ejercido diversas funciones a lo largo de su historia, en donde además de ser fortaleza militar en la colonia española (aunque nunca llegó a ser usado en guerra), fue también sede de la guardia presidencial en la república neocolonial, y además, sitio dónde se llevaron a cabo numerosas ejecuciones de los opositores al gobierno.

En la actualidad constituye un museo en dónde se puede apreciar parte de la infraestructura oiriginal de la edificación, así como exposiciones de obras diseñadas por Leonardo Da Vinci relacionadas con temas de ingeniería y fortificaciones. Entre los objetos que forman parte de esta colección diseñada por Da Vinci destacan telares, taladradoras horizontales, tornillo sin fin, martillo de levas, entre otras.

Así, el Castillo de Atarés constituye una estructura antigua que permanece en nuestro tiempo como testigo viviente de numerosos acontecimientos históricos y que invita al acercamiento para apreciar de sus maravillas y lo que tiene para mostrar y enseñar.
