Trip to Banská Štiavnica

We went on a trip to Banská Štiavnica in order to get to know one of the most beautiful historical places in Slovakia, registered in the cultural and natural heritage of UNESCO.

After arriving in the city we go to stay. We chose a pension with wellness for accommodation. We deserve to relax after a day of wandering around the city.

We quickly unpacked our things and set off to the city center. It's lunch time. We walk through the old streets of the city and choose one of the restaurants near the city center.

This area was inhabited by the Celts in the 3-2 centuries BC. They mined gold here. The mining of precious metals has apparently been connected with Banská Štiavnica since time immemorial.

The oldest mention of the town comes from 1156. As otherwise, it is connected with mining. Banská Štiavnica is mentioned in the mention as terra banensium - the land of miners.

In 1238, the town gained city privileges. At that time, silver was already being mined in the city.

Even Banská Štiavnica did not avoid raids by raiders and natural disasters. In 1442, the town was looted by the troops of Šimon Rozgoň, and to make matters worse, an earthquake struck him two years later. The earthquake destroyed the city so much that it had to be rebuilt.

In the 16th century, the city was threatened by Ottoman troops, as well as other parts of southern Slovakia. For this reason, the inhabitants of the city decided to rebuild the parish church into the so-called Old Castle and later built another on the hill above the city - the New Castle.

The Ottomans conquered many villages in the area, but they never conquered Štiavnica. However, the city was tired and decimated after the endless strain of Turkish confinement, multiplied by the noble uprisings and eternal strife between Protestants and Catholics. We saw the exhibition from the Ottoman incursions at the New Castle.

The Banská Štiavnica region literally lived in mining. In nearby Nova Bana, he was the first to build a Newcomen atmospheric steam engine on the European continent.

However, Banská Štiavnica had several championships. In 1735, the first mining school in Hungary was founded here. In 1763, the University of Mining was established in the town, the first mining school in Europe and at the same time it was the oldest technical school in the world. In 1873, a narrow-gauge railway from Hronská Dúbrava was operated here as the first public narrow-gauge steam railway in what was then Hungary.

Well, admit it, it was really enough.

The day is coming to an end, but we are not going to accommodation yet. I like night photos and I didn't forgive myself for taking a few today.
