[ENG&RU] Travel memories. Keukenhof garden, the Netherlands (may 2019)

English

Hello everyone! After exploring Amsterdam (about Amsterdam: @oleftinka/eng-and-ru-travel-memories-7489ded0a8614) we stayed in a beautiful hotel in Utrecht. It wasn't possible to walk around the city, but from the windows of the hotel there was a great view of the surrounding areas.
The next morning, we visited a place that I had dreamed of visiting for a long time. This is the Keukenhof garden in Lisse. It's also called the "Garden of Europe" or "Kitchen Park".

Keukenhof is the most famous, largest, and most photographed flower park in the world. The park covers 32 hectares, where 7 million flowers of 1,600 species are planted annually.
Keukenhof is unique in that it only works 8 weeks a year! It's open to visitors from the twentieth of March to the twentieth of May. In early spring, about 7 million different flowers bloom here: tulips, hyacinths, muscari, grouse, crocuses and daffodils. Most of all, of course, tulips of various varieties. In the park, in addition to flowers, there are 2,500 trees of 87 species, shrubs, and lawn grass. The length of the walking paths in the park is 15 km! Along the paths there are benches and sculptures of Dutch and foreign masters of different eras. There are many lakes, streams and channels in the park. About 40 bridges and bridges connect the shores of lakes and canals.
On the territory of the royal park, themed gardens are created: historical, musical, natural and Japanese - each of them is distinguished by its originality and uniqueness.

The history of the park begins in the XV century, when the Keukenhof was a small garden around the castle of the Countess of Bavaria - Jacoba van Beieren. They grew herbs and vegetables for the kitchen. Hence the name "Keukenhof" — kitchen garden.
In 1865, landscape architect Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher redesigned the castle gardens. That park, in the English landscape style, still constitutes the basis of Keukenhof.
The main mission of Keukenhof then and now is to present the opportunities of the Dutch flower sector — one of the leading sectors of the country's economy. Buyers can appreciate all the variety of flower bulbs from leading suppliers, and ordinary visitors can plunge into the world of flowers and beauty.

The theme of each season of Keukenhof is different. In 2019, it was called Flower Power - the time of the hippies, the years of the "children of flowers", peace and love. Also, 2019 was a jubilee year for the garden - it turned 70 years old! The theme of the park in 2020 was the World of Flowers. The theme of the park in 2021 was the World of Colors.

Тема парка в 2020 году - Мир цветов (A World of Colours). (World of Colors).

The dominant feature of the park is an old windmill. It is more than 120 years old, was built in Groningen and moved to the park in 1957. You can enter the mill and go up to the observation deck. It offers a beautiful view of the tulip fields. Unfortunately, we were unlucky and at the time of our visit on May 2, the tulip fields were mowed down.

The park also has interesting installations and photo zones. For example, these huge clogs (klomp) are bright wooden shoes that are a symbol of Holland, as well as fabulous tulips, windmills and canals. The appearance of this type of shoes is associated with the humid temperate maritime climate of the Netherlands, when there is a high probability of getting your feet wet at any time of the year. Historically, they were common among the poorer population-fishermen and farmers who didn't have the means to buy comfortable, durable and more expensive shoes.

In the park there is a large beautiful lake with a fountain.

Unfortunately, in 2020, Keukenhof Park was closed due to the threat of COVID-19. In 2021, it was planned to open the Keukenhof Park for tourists from March 20 to May 9. Preparations for the opening of the park had been underway since the fall, but in early March 2021, it was announced that the Keukenhof Park would not open in March 2021.
At the moment, you can only enjoy the flowers in the park online, on the official website of the park, on the Visit Keukenhof Facebook page and on the Visit Keukenhof YouTube channel.

It took us about 4.5 (!) hours to get around the entire park. During my stay in the park, it periodically rained, but even it didn't spoil my impressions of the garden.
Keukenhof is a flower paradise! This is the most beautiful park I've ever been to. I advise everyone to visit this place, even those who don't really like flowers. It seems to me that looking at this beauty, no one will remain indifferent.

My recommendations for visiting:

  • The best time to see the whole park in bloom is from mid-April to the end of March (we were on May 2 and were late for the blooming fields). In March, not all the flowers have opened, in May, most have already faded.
  • Try to avoid popular dates: Flower Parade (Saturday in mid-April), Easter holidays (according to the Catholic calendar) and King's Day (April 27). Fewer visitors come to the Keukenhof at the beginning of the week, in the morning before 10:30 and in the afternoon after 16:00.
  • Plan a visit to the park for about 4-6 hours.

I specifically didn't mention in this story a few more interesting objects of the Keukenhof Park - pavilions. I'll tell you about them next time.
