[ENG&RU] Travel memories. Amsterdam, the Netherlands (may 2019)

English

Hello everybody! Today I continue to share my memories from my trip to Europe in 2019. From Berlin (about Berlin here: @oleftinka/eng-and-ru-travel-memories-f087444ad07fa) we went to the Netherlands. The first city we visited in this country was, of course, Amsterdam.

Our acquaintance with Amsterdam began with a visit to one of the oldest operating diamond factories and the diamond museum "Coster Diamonds" located right in its building. It's located on Museum Square in close proximity to the Van Gogh Museum and the National Museum of the Netherlands.
The history of the country is closely linked to diamonds, so it isn't surprising that this is a well-known landmark of Amsterdam. It was here that some historical masterpieces were created, such as the "Dresden Green Diamond", belonging to the Saxon dynasty, as well as the newly cut "Kohinoor" diamond, inserted into the crown of Queen Mary, stored in the Tower of London among other Crown Jewels of Great Britain.

After visiting the museum, we had a walking tour of the center of Amsterdam. From the Diamond Factory we went towards Leiden Square (Leidseplein). This cozy and fabulous square is home to bars and restaurants, coffee shops and theaters, nightclubs and even casinos, street performers and fast food.
One of the most significant places of the square is the coffeeshop "Bulldog Palace". The most piquant-smoking areas are located in the former cells of the police station.

Amsterdam is a city of bicycles, canals, and gabled houses. The historical center of the city is characterized by a large number of well-preserved medieval buildings — churches, residential or merchant houses. The architecture that became the hallmark of the whole country was formed in the XVII century and managed to preserve its original appearance to this day.

Right in the center of Amsterdam, there is a unique architectural monument Beguinage (Begijnhof).
The Begijnhof is a complex of pretty houses, located at the level of medieval streets – a whole meter below the rest of the old buildings in Amsterdam. Now the area belongs to the English Reformed Church, and once there was a monastery of beguines.
The religious movement of the beguines, which emerged in Europe in the XII century, was quite widespread in the Netherlands. Beguines led a monastic lifestyle, lived in dormitories (beguinages), could leave their fellow women at any time and even get married.
Also included in the Begijnhof ensemble is the Roman Catholic chapel, built in 1671.

The last attraction in the walking tour was the central square of the city - Dam Square. Today, Dam Square is the center of political, commercial and cultural life not only in Amsterdam, but also in the Netherlands as a whole.
The square stretches for about 200 meters in length and has an almost rectangular shape. This scale and scope is very atypical for Amsterdam. When you get to the square after narrow canals and narrow sidewalks, houses, picking up each other, immediately begin to run away eyes. But soon the attention is focused on the majestic Royal Palace - the main architectural dominant of Dam Square.
A huge palace rises right in the center of Dam Square. Its height is 90 meters. The Royal palace was built in 1648, in the so - called "Golden Age" of Holland - the economic heyday of the state.
Next to the palace is the Nieuwekerk ("New Church") church. This is not only one of the most striking sights of Amsterdam - you can say, the symbol of the Dutch capital - but also a venue for events of national significance. Here for more than 200 years, representatives of the royal family have been married and the monarchs of the Netherlands ascend to the throne, antique fairs, famous exhibitions and concerts are held here.

Then we went to travel through the streets of Amsterdam on our own.

The Russian trail isn't difficult to find in Amsterdam. In 2006, sculptures from the famous painting "The Night Watch" were installed on Rembrandt Square. Sculptors Alexander Taratynov and Mikhail Dronov cast 22 figures of officers and soldiers of the security company, depicted in the painting of the same name. The sculptural composition harmoniously fits into the space of the square. It is easy to recognize the painting - it's an "icon" in the painting of the XVII century.

Amsterdam has five bell towers and one of them is the Mint Tower, Munttoren. In the Middle Ages, when the city was surrounded by fortress walls with towers, it was one of the towers that protected the city. Today, the Mint Tower is located in the heart of the metropolis, at the intersection of several streets and two canals. The melodious ringing of the bells of the Mint Tower can be heard every 15 minutes. Moreover, every Saturday from 2 to 3 o'clock in the afternoon, a bell ringer rises to the bell tower.

The Rijksmuseum ranks among the twenty most popular museums in the world. Every year there are about 2.5 million visitors. The museum's art collection is comparable to the Louvre Museum in Paris and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. It occupies the main place on the Museum Square in Amsterdam, where there are two more museums - Van Gogh museum and Stedelijk. In the Rijksmuseum, you can learn about the artistic development of the Netherlands and see the best works of famous Dutch masters, including Rembrandt and Frans Hals, Vermeer and Jan Sten, Jacob van Ruisdael and van der Gelst.

Not far from the Rijksmuseum is the Van Gogh Museum. This is the largest collection of Van Gogh's creations in the world, with 200 paintings, 437 drawings and 31 prints, including the famous "Sunflowers", "Tthe White Orchard" and "The Yellow House", as well as many self-portraits of the artist.

Then we went back to Dam Square. On the way, we met a Flower market. It is the only floating market in the world. Farmers from Holland had a hand in its creation-they traded daily on boats with imported flowers.

Of course, we visited the Old Church area (Oudekerk) and Red-light district.
The ancient Oudekerk Church, located in Amsterdam, has been admiring and delighting the inhabitants of Europe and the whole world for 8 centuries with its unsurpassed grandeur and primitiveness. And it seems that the Spirit of the Middle Ages lurks in the heart of Amsterdam. The old Church embodies all the contradictions of the "new" and "old " world, the dark and light sides of human history.
The Oudekerksplein around the Oudekerk Church is also of some peculiar interest. Here you can also see the famous ensemble representing a hand stroking a woman's breast. This small monument is literally firmly embedded in the pavement in the heart of Amsterdam and has become an integral part of it. It represents the eternal unity and struggle of the male and female principles. The male palm, symbolizing firmness, strength, and power, rests on the female breast, symbolizing submission and softness. Moreover, that hand is attached to the female body by a powerful chain with a lock, which probably should mean a certain dependence of male strength on female beauty. In addition to such a lofty and philosophical interpretation, this monument has a more mundane meaning associated with its location – the Red-light district.

At the end of our walk, we reached Amsterdam Central Station. The building reflects the Neo-Renaissance style. The facade is lined with red brick, and the sides are decorated with two clock towers. One of them shows the time, and the other serves as a weather vane. Outside the building, the coats of arms of 14 European countries and Amsterdam itself are installed.
Nearby is the Basilica of St. Nicholas. Nicholas. The absence of excessive pomp, the predominance of paintings and paintings over sculptural and bas-relief art, the presence of a cozy, homely atmosphere are the distinctive features of this temple.

Amsterdam is the pearl of Northern Europe, the "Venice of the North", a city of amazing architecture, hundreds of canals and thousands of bridges. This is a place of truly free morals with a cozy atmosphere of an old European city. In Amsterdam, everyone will find something different: from going to museums and sightseeing, to the delicious cuisine of local restaurants and noisy parties. It's one of the most photogenic cities I've ever been to. In Amsterdam, you don't have to wander around the city for hours to see something beautiful or spend a lot of time and effort to find the sights. It is beautiful absolutely everywhere and you can photograph literally everything: every house, every door, every monument, every bridge with a huge number of bicycles. This city, which is able to fall in love at first sight with its cozy streets, numerous canals and gingerbread houses.
