but I always feel like a lot (not all, just most) of the more modern/recent architecture has no soul.
Same here. It can be impressive and look cool, but that feeling quickly fades off and you don't feel at home so much, you just feel surrounded by big offices/workplaces covered in big panels of glass. That's not life, and that certainly isn't people.
