Autumn is now upon us here in Australia and the weather is getting colder and the sky not as clear but the weather is still quite muggy and warm. A great time to escape amongst the beautiful nature and visit the Melton Botanical Gardens

today we went exploring in the magical Melton Botanical Gardens a beautiful wonderland which predominantly focuses on native Australian plants and a few exotic gardens which showcase a symbolic and well know tress such as the olive tree.

located in Melton South the Melton Botanical Garden is brimming with wild life as the native plants act as a green Wedge and animal oasis amongst suburban sprawl. with environmental degradation occurring due to the rapid expansion of Melbourne places like Melton Botanical Garden a vital for the protection of a range of animal species. ranging from birds to mammals and aquatic animals all can be found thriving in this garden.

Melton Botanical Garden is operated by a broad group of volunteers undertaking environmental protection, rubbish collection and planning and planting the gardens.

also included in the Garden are BBQ areas for people to enjoy a family gathering and a lunch or a cook up for a event and even open for weddings and special occasions.

in the middle of the Gardens is a lake which is also a bird sanctuary which was nominated for and won the Keeping Victoria Beautiful award in 2019.

the park is also set along an Indigenous camping ground which has significant cultural value to the local area. the Garden also has a national register of over 100 species of eucalyptus trees within the park from all over Australia. on-site is also a nursery which uses the plants within the garden to create seedlings and plant within the garden expanding its zone. the seedlings are also on sale to the general public and you can even buy arrangements to plant in your own garden that mimic miniature Melton Botanical Gardens and some of their feature plants and trees. Also included is a traditional map of all the Indigenous nations prior to European arrival.

a South African Garden is also on feature as much of the plant life in South Africa is climatised to the Australian environment and can survive on our continent.

there are both eco trails as well as pavement which can be enjoyed by walkers, riders and prams a like! my favourite were the off road nature walks which are only visible through slight clearings amongst tree and plant canopy.

there are also native fruit and vegetables being grown in the garden such as bush tomatoes, for the relatively unknown they are a distant relative and probably an early form of tomatoe. not for the faint hearted as they aren't the best tasting thing on the planet.

our family really enjoyed our day out at the Melton Botanical Gardens, with open large spaces, lots of signs to learn about each plant and tree and breathtaking views we would highly recommend visiting the area and learning more about the native plant life.

or perhaps you're looking for a brisk walk away from the hustle and bustle of the city and a nice family BBQ. either way Melton Botanical Gardens are a wonderful escape and we look forward to the increased investment and further development of this green Wedge over the coming years with more art, plants and works being done to expand and provide my shelter and habitat for native animals.
