Varadero Beach

Varadero is only 140 kilometers from Havana. According to many, it is the most beautiful Cuban beach and one of the most important tourist destinations, not only in Cuba, but also in the Caribbean.

It is located on the Hicacos Peninsula. A narrow strip of land north of the province of Matanzas. From one coast to the other the distance averages 500 meters. In several areas it is much narrower. In length it has about 30 kilometers of which a little more than 2O are beautiful beaches of white sands and crystal clear waters.

The sandy beach includes the bathing area, the sandy strip and the strip of coastal vegetation. It has several cliffs with heights ranging from 4 to 10 meters that rise abruptly above the sea and are one of the most interesting scenic areas of this resort.

The flat sandy area forms most of the peninsula and is largely urbanized with a picturesque village that has been founded more than 100 years ago and to which numerous hotels have been added over the years.

The town is very quiet, with a main street (Avenida Primera) that runs parallel to the beach. Its population center is located from 1st to 64th streets, all perpendicular to the coasts and numbered consecutively. It has very few tall buildings and on almost every corner there is a cafeteria or restaurant. Many are guano-roofed ranchones, very cozy for the island's tropical climate.
