The Devil's bridge
The Devil's Bridge was built at the beginning of the 16th century. In its place there was an old Roman bridge connecting the White Sea and Thrace.
The bridge was built by order of Sultan Selim I.
It is the largest and most famous Ottoman bridge in the Rhodopes.
The length of the bridge is 56 meters and the width is 3.5 meters. The height of the central arch reaches almost 12 meters.

Дяволският мост датира от началото на ХVІ век. На негово място е имало стар римски мост, свързващ Бяло море и Тракия. Мостът е построен по заповед на султан Селим I.
Това е най-големият и най-известен османски мост в Родопите.
Дължината на мостa е 56 метра, а широчината 3,5 метра. Височината на централния свод достига почти 12 метра.
For centuries the bridge has been shrouded in legends and mysteries.
Legend has it that for a long time no one could build a bridge at that place. The attempts of many builders ended in failure due to the turbulent waters of the Arda River.
A young builder Dimitar from the nearby village (now town) of Nedelino, accepted the challenge and took on the difficult task.
One night, the Devil appeared to him and told him that he would reveal to him the secret of how to build a sturdy and age-old bridge, if only he could meet two conditions.
The bridge was to be built in 40 days and the Devil's face was to be embedded in the base of the structure. The face had to be both visible and invisible.
The builder, Dimitar, carried out all the Devil's orders, but died soon after and took the secret with him to the afterlife.
The face of the Devil can only be seen at certain times of the day, between 11 and 12 o'clock.
We must look at the stone under the central vault and its reflection in the water and rotate the picture 90 degrees. Using our imagination, we can see Satan's face.
I can detect 4 faces, maybe I have a very developed imagination 😉
От векове мостът е обвит в легенди и загадки.
Легендата разказва, че дълго време никой не можел да построи мост на това място. Опитите на много строители завършвали с неуспех, поради буйните води на река Арда.
Един млад строител Димитър от близкото село (вече град) Неделино, приел предизвикателството и се нагърбил с тежката задача.
Една нощ Дяволът му се явил и му казал, че ще му разкрие тайната как да построи здрав и вековен мост, само ако успее да изпълни две условия.
Мостът трябвало да бъде построен за 40 дни и в основата на строежа да бъде вграден образа на Дявола. Образът трябвало да бъде едновременно видим и невидим.
Майсторът Димитър изпълнил всички условия на дявола, но скоро след това починал и отнесъл тайната със себе си в отвъдното.
Днес образа на Дявола може да се види само в определено време от деня, между 11 и 12 часа на обяд.
Трябва да се вгледаме в камъкът под централния свод и отражението му във водата. Използвайки въображението си, можем да видим сатанинския образ.
Аз лично виждам 4 лика, но явно имам прекалено развито въображение 😉
Another legend has it that the devil's footprint is visible in one of the rocks, but we haven't found where it is.
On one of the stones of the central vault, researchers have found a strange seal in the shape of a hexagon, called "the seal of Solomon".
An interesting fact is that until today, 5 centuries after its construction, no repairs have been made on the bridge.

Друга легенда гласи, че в някоя от скалите личи стъпката на дявола, но ние не открихме това място.
Върху един от камъните на централния свод, изследователите са открили странен печат във формата хексагон, наричан „печата на Соломон”.
Интересен факт е, че до днес, 5 века след построяването му не се правени основни ремонти по моста.
